A big upset this week in the senate -- which some say should be a wake up call for Washington.

Six term Indiana senator Dick Lugar losing a hotly contested primary challenge to the Tea Party backed challenger.

Richard Murdoch.

Some Tea Party activists are saying this victory is a clear sign that the movement still have -- of clout.

And one person who hopes history will repeat itself is Dan.

He is -- Tea Party backed candidate hoping to unseat long term you -- senator Orrin hatch.

When that's it holds its primary in June.

-- our program's great to have you here today Acer.

Thank you -- agree with you.

Let me Begin by saying that in Indiana as senator Lugar of course -- big it wasn't even close do you believe that you -- The Tea Party stands to gain being in your race as well.

But in my whether you associate yourself with the Tea Party or not when you go throughout huge top.

Everybody I talk to -- concerned about debt and spending federally.

And they are looking for new leaders in Washington of a track record of taking that on and that's what I've done and our message is resonating.

-- campaign is backed by freedom works which is a Tea Party activist group but not all of grassroots Tea Party movement in -- state are supporting you it back.

The Tea Party express says it will not campaign against senator hatch calling him quote the original Tea Party -- how does that impact your campaign right now what does -- say.

About the divisions within the Tea Party in Thursday.

Well look we -- divisions in the Tea Party and our state I think there's a whole bunch of people have tried to take the Tea Party one direction or another.

But what's resonating with people is that debt and spending matter.

You know aren't -- -- a record over the years of expanding entitlement programs.

That being the third highest year marker in congress.

Expanding an increase in his own perks and benefits and then my American is the opposite I've.

Cut as spending we've dead to address entitlements and Medicaid spending here in Utah where it in my service in the state legislature.

And we've we actually cut pensions for legislators.

So we have a stark contrast to what his vision is for the federal government -- -- mine isn't so we think ours is resonating quite well.

Wouldn't do in terms of the split within the Tea Party within your state is that talk about how fluid this whole situation -- and that.

People are not to as polarized as one might think.

Well I don't think yeah I mean look.

I think people reality is not negotiable -- we have a reality issue that's facing us -- -- debt and spending and what people look.

At those issues.

They -- the associate yourself of the Tea Party or not they're looking for leadership and Dave so far when we get out front of people.

They've come our way we saw that -- the caucus convention cycle -- percent are perhaps in her primary for the first time in 36 years.

-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- So many political observers have been saying that because Mitt Romney is the presumptive Republican nominee that the Tea Party influence will have less -- an impact in the upcoming elections across the country.

Do you think people still underestimate the Tea Party.

But I think -- I'm a supporter of Mitt Romney he's a friend of mine he's yeah he's a good man and he has focus on the fiscal issues and so.

I consider him.

And the efforts he's going to make on the debt and with cut cap and balance and the other things that he stands for.

To be a big influence on spending long term -- that for me is the essence of the Tea Party movement so.

I think you will be successful I do think people get behind him I certainly am.

And expect the people around the country your interest sitting curbing government spending will get behind a Mitt Romney.

Right to thank you for joining us today we appreciate it good luck to you want to tell our viewers of Fox News reached out to senator Orrin hatch.
