And that is a scene from a new horror movie no that's -- -- from the new -- from the Obama campaign attacking Mitt Romney for his work at gain capital which included the shut down eventually.
GST -- Kansas City steel manufacturer.
That his company took over or help or partially took over in 1992 decade later it was closed if Obama campaign says that that sort of heartless cruelty is the very kind of thing that Mitt Romney would engage again.
Hughes president of United States this is power play I.
And -- are -- and we welcome human.
We welcome you here on a drizzly Monday here in Washington DC good to brighten your spirits we can introduce you to for the very first time.
Here is.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- She's the national Press Secretary for the Republican National Committee.
And Melanie herself she is the national press secretary of the Democratic National Committee that you know their bosses.
Who did battle for your amusement.
Georgetown University.
That -- Sean Spicer.
And -- -- house.
So -- we're expecting you ladies to be more civilized perhaps then -- -- -- your bosses.
But no less informative.
So the question and let's start with you Melanie.
The question is.
As the president turns and sharpens his attack on Mitt Romney and this -- other ways you're very usual it's a two minute long spot.
Do Obama campaign has all that money.
And it's a two minute -- spot -- their -- yet in Florida Missouri Iowa Nevada North Carolina so I see confidence on the one hand.
To big ad buy and it's in some states that look like we'd be pretty tough may be pretty tough to the president Missouri does not look like it's breaking -- right now.
But it also is unusual for president to go so unencumbered to go so negative so early what should we gather about the president's strategy in looking at this big -- Well Chris thank you so much for having me on I think this is -- this is more about.
Explaining to the American public.
Cool Mitt Romney has and his claim to fame.
He's been running for president for sixty years now and throughout that time he's claimed to be some type of economic wizard who can grow the economy and this is a look an in depth look.
-- that wizardry and what it's all about.
And it's about his values his economic values he didn't create any jobs in fact he was a corporate raider who went into it but companies took them over.
And ended up with a lot of layoffs a lot of people not working he claims he created jobs and he didn't this is about Mitt Romney's record -- something he doesn't want to talk about.
So we're gonna talk about it.
Now -- the Mitt Romney I would go ahead and and stipulate for -- so we can show you some time off of this.
Mitt Romney is generally seen.
By the industry experts as that Bain Capital was one of the most successful firms in this regard this instance was very sad for the 750 people that were involved at Bain Capital is generally seen as one of speeding.
Better than almost anybody else in the business of private equity which is where you find a struggling company coming with the cash infusion take over control of it and put in -- different direction I want to ask you didn't.
Is there a danger for Mitt Romney that in these days in these places I look at a place like Nevada where people are economically crash.
And feeling not very good about certainly the state of the economy but also not feeling very good about people who might exploit that is there a danger from LeBron in this.
Well I think it's pretty clear day Mitt Romney has -- created more jobs in the private when he is in the -- protection as governor.
As Massachusetts then President Obama has as -- I think so.
I think that there you know that this is it is every election is a referendum on the president.
The referendum on the last three and a half years the promises that he ran on in 2000 -- to create jobs and turn the economy around.
And that you guys -- on the last jobs report it's pretty clear that the president.
Has not done its job and we are now regardless the labor force it participation rate is the lowest.
Than in than anytime since 1981 beside end that is.
There's probably being mean there's a third day this -- the fact that he's too mean and that he is going to be cool.
I think that right now this is a referendum on the president and I think that we're doing our job right now to make sure that.
That that is what the American people are talking about it and we welcome the president his campaign in Chicago talking about jobs because I think it's time.
That he has and we haven't seen that out of this president in the campaign.
And we welcome -- talked about jobs any day of the week against this president.
Chris -- just assurances please I think it's shift.
I'd like to see the -- on Mitt Romney creating more jobs than the president the president has created four point two million jobs.
Over the last 26 months we -- -- 26 months of job growth.
Mitt Romney and governor.
Created 22000.
Private sector jobs.
He was 47 and fiftieth and job creation -- Massachusetts is a lot smaller than the country 22000.
Right.
When he 2000 that's an anemic that's anemic job growth so best -- right.
I'm pretty funny -- I think we're pretty confident and Mitt Romney's ability.
You're in the private sector as governor of Massachusetts.
To create jobs and I think that this rhetoric out of the campaign you know that he -- Is a distraction I think that it didn't we saw today Steve Rattner that out -- that presidents -- And cars are come out and say that this this and this attack is unfair PO innocent to be fair.
That Mitt Romney is wrong to consider himself -- job creator.
Well the Internet does not end the Internet doesn't much care about Steve -- -- -- -- as of -- of -- but anyway.
Let's let's come on the show -- -- -- and we think he's great but Melanie.
And there is a danger in this for the president attack is always danger but as George W.
Bush demonstrated 2004 he was the first incumbent president to go negative early.
So this is not round that has been -- before but in both human and scope the president is from.
Really and basically what bush did in 2000 -- Was -- and he took a -- John Kerry in about march and April and then backed off and then they waited till the end you were shocked when he did it early that.
Is there are a problem though when you have an incumbent president who is swinging so hard so -- when he is running an ad that Newt Gingrich might have run.
Is there a danger that people are going to wearied Greg and you're right -- says will the -- not get tired of six months of negative.
Its fullest -- the president started last week -- releasing ads about how he's gonna move the country forward that's what we're going to be talking about it is only fair.
To go in depth -- on Mitt Romney's record which he doesn't want to talk about -- you've here you've heard Kirsten here talk about.
Wanting -- talk about jobs we gonna talk about that too because the president hasn't.
Clear record on jobs we created 44 point two million jobs 26 months of -- best job growth we've been.
Had several months of manufacturing sector growth.
And Mitt Romney in Massachusetts had a huge manufacturing sector decline.
I'm twice the national rate we wanna talk about jobs -- we think it's important to talk about.
Chris -- -- -- -- about the delayed again you get that you -- Mitt Romney is it as a great private sector record at yet he was very successful -- -- -- -- -- ask you about this stuff.
And we also stipulate for unit we hate talking about gay marriage we don't want to talk about gay marriage but he keeps coming up in the news I will not show you -- silly Newsweek cover that Newsweek did win today rainbow pride halo over the president.
I guess figuring that time magazine last week with that.
-- Grown child breastfeeding was not -- was not enough there are going to plaza new ground but is there opportunity.
For the Republicans.
On this gay marriage issue and if so how do you do without looking like what the Democrats say you are which is means.
Well I think that what we -- what we have out of last week.
Is that we have two very cleared contrasting.
Messages are your marriage yes and this is something where governor Romney has Spain.
Very clear very consistent on his position.
14.
But for traditional marriage but also.
Against any discrimination.
Amongst anybody especially.
-- gay Americans.
And so I think that this is something where.
I'm the president I was forced to make a decision that he was not ready to make -- was clear that president the vice president -- -- -- an after action I think that we saw the New York Times -- wearing -- -- column this morning saying that this decision was not.
Something that showed courage from the president and I and I think that this is -- -- like I said before this is -- -- and we're very contrasting clear.
Positions -- Melanie do you by the the president was somehow pushing.
This that he was like not for gay marriage but Joseph Biden made -- for gay marriage.
No not -- -- the president set himself that this is an issue he's involved on he's talked to his wife and his kids in.
It in in talking to staff members and friends he came to this conclusion totally on his own.
And this was an and an announcement he plans to make.
Long before the election.
And the thing and one thing I can say we agree on is that there is -- clear distinction.
Between the two parties here between the two candidates the Republican Party on this issue stands for inequality and discrimination I have to -- with you.
When you when you -- pushing a constitutional.
Amendment the president thinks that states should be allowed to discriminate right the president thinks states should be allowed.
To make their own even that is even on -- -- people that -- anywhere.
Amending the US constitution.
To limit rights the constitution has only been used to expand -- That there.
Proposal that that's part of the Republican Party platform.
To.
Have a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage would be the first of its kind to limit writes that as a form of discrimination that the president does not.
-- the Internet is open is already unhappy that this conversation about gay marriage has gone on this long.
Our apologies but we -- clearing the air here on our life.
