My -- -- -- it's good to have you back on.
Our -- here in this area of the newsroom -- plan is different.
-- fight the defense cuts.
Add to the defense budget at a time read everybody's talking about the debt and spending which could be difficult sell we'll get to that in -- moment.
But your ideas to get rid of what you call mandatory spending programs that are quote dysfunctional.
In the US government what would you get rid of in order to keep the defense budget where you want.
Well this goes back to when we pass the Deficit Reduction Act last year.
And we saved about 900 billion dollars.
Out of out of spending half of that came out of the military.
Even though they only account for less than 20% of the budget -- for the savings came out of the military.
And then on top about that in the super committee special committee super committee.
Was supposed to find savings on the mandatory side of spending.
Because if you eliminated all of the discretionary spending we would still be running.
A deficit of about a half trillion dollars a year so the real.
Problem that we have to address of reforms in the yeah.
Mandatory spending program and -- let me just pick up but the point that you're making their -- you say the troops make up twenty percent of our budget.
But they're going to pay 50%.
Of the cut.
So why would -- already why would Washington one that deal.
Well that's a lot of -- in Washington don't.
You know if you keep trying to solve the deficit problem on the backs of our troops.
Who's gonna have our backs the next time were attacked.
Secretary Panetta says the the house and folks -- were just inviting more gridlock.
What do you say to that.
-- we we we passed that Deficit Reduction Act which will.
Take us on a glide path to start cutting our overall spending.
On top of the 487.
Billion that -- cut from defense already in this budget.
We have another five to 600 billion that kicks in in January sequestration which means over the next ten years were taking.
A hundred billion dollars a year out of defense that's at a time when -- in war.
-- -- and history we've taken down our military after every war so that we won't be prepared for the next one.
This is the first time I've seen this have deficit reduction like this on the backs of our troops while they're still fighting over in Afghanistan.
I mentioned a veto threat by the president would -- say to them.
Well you know if he wants to to be -- the things that we're doing to try to help the troops.
That's up to him.
He increased the budget for defense four billion dollars we increase it they just a little bit more than the president.
I mean that's a lot of money four billion dollars.
But the things we do without -- to try to keep that the bill promises were made to the troops when they signed up for the military.
That they'll be given help here.
The president wanted to increase the cost of their health care.
We take the difference -- and and keep their costs in line with the with the promises that we've made.
We also.
They wanted to retire three ships before -- even have their useful lifetime.
We keep those ships in the -- So -- -- spending the money to keep our ability to defend the common.
Defense for the nation and our allies.
In place and we just think that that's a very high priority for about -- and it's a battle Royale as you well know thank you for your time we're gonna keep in touch review and follow.
What happens next thank you sir thank you very much bill thank -- we'll parent.
