Rob Portman Marco Rubio and Paul Ryan and those have to -- on the short list.

For presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney as he -- and continues into his process of choosing a running game.

This is power play and I and Chris -- -- and let me tell you this.

I know what you like Internet I know exactly what -- You'd like to talk about -- Mitt Romney's would pick as his running mate we've had great chat about it all week.

Everybody has been sounding off lots of interest.

Everything from Rob Portman to Rand Paul lots of ideas out there.

Well here's a little tip for you.

You should read the hill.

You should read every morning because each day there is news there there's actual news there's not just conjecture and opinion there is actual news.

And the man responsible for making sure that that happens every day.

Is Bob Cusack he is the managing editor of the hill.

And today your newspaper.

Has a fascinating story that breaks the news that the process of vetting.

Did Romney's potential running mates has begun perhaps.

This is it thanks for the kind words it -- bedding has begun he's possible candidates some had been contacted.

Not some have been not senator Johnson's.

Told us.

That he is not yet -- context he could be found but but the process now we also are -- Alexander Bolton went up to Paul Ryan and up.

To senator Portman and -- rubio.

None of them want to talk.

Okay so that's that's -- -- is that rubio was talking a lot about the VP.

Until recently when he said I don't -- about the process but I that's code for I think contacted and I don't say that process has begun yet and these guys have to do that in a fight liberal you don't talk itself.

So.

That's it -- has begun where we'll go from here.

Unclear but clearly it's going to be very organized methodical.

Search firm for a -- -- Now I probably don't need to tell you to do this because you're probably doing even as we speak but who do you think.

Mitt Romney should pick as his running mate you can -- in the -- there or.

You can speak directly to me Nazi style firewall on Twitter I throw it in there and -- -- -- raised the issue with Bob and -- see what's likely.

Now the issue for Mitt Romney is.

He is a really by the -- he loves -- he is -- corporate he thinks corporate he has that that's his background that's his mindset.

And for him -- I guess it is not surprising that he's being so delivered about -- starting the vetting process so early and going through in this very methodical way right yeah.

Society means they've -- look at so much stuff we talk to a lot of people who have gone through the process people who it.

-- -- investigating Joseph Lieberman said vetting process is like colonoscopy without the pain -- I -- itself.

This yeah this is stuff that Jim -- remember for years that he'd wanted to do this is not a Zambian vice president Sosa please I will not go -- the vetting process so we may go through legislation.

Personal background.

I'm one of the advisors told Lieberman that he should sit down with his wife and say.

He'd never only something ready to ask the time its -- itself.

So it is that it's exhaustive.

-- but if it doesn't take that long I mean it can be done in in thirty to sixty days -- -- a preliminary idea and then you have.

Extensive interviews and an amazing is that it will narrow I -- we that a lot of candidates were talking about now but just like Barack Obama.

And McCain that -- was more of a lot better but the -- -- came down to Biden I think Tim Kaine.

And one other writer Evan Evan -- I try -- and -- -- different but good enough.

That was of course back when the President Obama was definitely trying to make an appeal to the center and he was very much about being sort of post partisan -- somebody like Evan -- A quite conservative sort of Clinton Democrat -- Indiana.

What I had had a lot of appeal need to get a miss direction play if you were called him.

And then they didn't anybody out -- it was it doesn't even then and then it was not by about my eyes and different and and all of that stuff and by the way I should tell you.

Later in the show of our -- gonna join us and we are gonna talk about Joseph Biden unplugged as he as he.

Worked across the steel valley the Ohio valley.

-- at Mitt Romney we will talk about that we will talk about what Mitt Romney needs to do to stay plausibly presidential.

For the coming weeks we will do that I promise but the thing that you love to talk about I know.

Is this.

Oh and I should point out you just want to let him bite is now Fox News contributor and -- extra awesome.

But now what about this let me throw -- -- action to -- What about Joseph mansion.

What about it while cargo on the other way that he picks that Rummy goes and expect conservative Democrat right and slips it out -- crazy or not great.

I I think it's out of Romney's character but certainly Joseph mansion as someone who's been very critical of the president has said he failed to lead.

On fiscal matters and has said he's not sure he's gonna endorses Zell -- formula so that there's there is an opening and -- DC that would.

If he doesn't do that kind of effect -- -- -- is going to be more unpredictable because he talked to people.

Close to the Obama campaign they say.

Okay -- is -- any formal candidate but he's predictable.

And he needs to do unpredictable and -- recently wrote that Republican lawmakers are urging Romney to go to Israel and that -- -- the Obama campaign on its -- why because well.

Almost back on Israel in his presence.

That's right.

So.

-- true links as Paul Ryan is my VP.

Then.

Those Romney's already -- his plan and those attacks.

Will be coming regardless but even so for Romney if you do it -- right now.

That is like that's not just saying I don't Ryan's plan that's saying -- have to defend.

Every thing -- is it worth the tradeoff.

I don't think so I think -- out Paul Ryan is an overrated -- he's clearly.

Being considered but -- I don't think he's gonna bring a lot of Hispanic voters that's key.

And I think that budget while Romney has endorsed it the left wants -- effect run itself.

I don't think he -- So -- Portman and rubio sound like the this.

Favorite things right yeah I mean -- they have to leave the -- if you -- getting in trade comics that tracks the predictability of stuff.

Portland's hot right now -- epidemic 20% to put -- and -- 15% rubio was higher a few weeks ago.

-- -- I thinks as it has not had a stellar few weeks is auditioning to be foreign policy speech didn't hit it out of the park itself.

But clearly.

-- is ready to be president there's no doubt about it and rubio would bring Hispanic but he's already exists and presents itself.

Those are I think some of that two of the top tips.

And now when we look at what.

Romney needs and we talked about this here before.

It depends on whether he's -- whether he's trailing yes it's -- about how much how much risk you won't make but.

You know one thing that Romney does have to deal with and you see you know Joseph Biden.

Trying to play this -- for president.

Which is outreach to blue collar especially Catholic voters in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

So important -- -- -- because anybody who wins those two states is very likely going to win the election -- and that's a huge part of those voters.

Portman does represent Ohio but he doesn't he's from a white shoe law firm in Cincinnati he's he's say upscale.

Ohio Republican.

Is there somebody out there that -- could pick it would it would sort of be -- the counter to Joseph Biden somebody -- Catholic somebody who could go out there and and really connect.

With these 01 idea the guys who could definitely of the blue collar voters is it's Chris -- I don't think he's going to be picked.

But he's someone new and he lets face it Obama and Romney don't appeal to blue collar voters need to -- did.

And you know Joseph Biden has it from Scranton he does have some appeal to -- -- -- some people say he he's he doesn't and and this whole thing is -- -- -- because he's dinner in Washington his his whole career but.

They do need.

Think along those lines because any look at Obama bowled a 37 OK I can't exactly not a good round.

It's not like call a slower is not better and Romney's favorite sport in the Summer Olympics women's volleyball OK that's -- can appeal to the steeler fan intensity.

Now actually I -- some Steelers fans probably like women now OK -- Yeah -- have liked it for a different reason than those guys that but there's a -- Billy -- had a strong appeal especially the beach kind.

Frankie -- says my heart wants senator rubio senator mansion would be interesting but the Smart move -- senator Portman.

Great change says if Paul Ryan's wife said no the White House as -- -- -- question mark.

Well the truth is that people say a lot of stuff in this process as as it goes forward except for.

Mitch Daniels of Indiana.

Who you who.

Made it very transparent my wife told me I could not do -- -- the best if I get them out to play Jerry Daniels then no I have to stay home.

Anything that anybody says prior to being tapped for a job like this goes in the category of stuff people say.

Right that's right Joseph Biden said he didn't want to I don't I don't want to hit it and remember -- on the Republican side.

Whoever this it's whoever the -- is is going to be the next in line and the Republicans that's how they work is.

Is the next in line usually becomes the nominee down the road so do people want this absolutely.

Of course they want it and it's also.

The chance that if you can the vice presidency is a fund -- defined entity you can have a very powerful vice president like Dick Cheney.

As you look -- where you're basically writing your own.

Job description.

Or you could have -- somebody like Biden who doesn't get a very big portfolio.

And he just is -- political entity that has been in governing so if you're somebody like Paul Ryan.

You wanna do this or Mitch Daniels or any of these or or Portland -- policy wonk.

You can say look I wanna do this but I need you to promise me that if I get in there you're gonna give me a chance to do so.

Yeah and the one thing I think also that you need that that Biden does help with Obama is.

Obama doesn't have relationships on capitol Joseph Biden does and he has.

Somebody that I agree he's not in the room in these campaign Brett the decision itself but I think you need somebody who's gonna have good outreach to Capitol Hill so you can move your agenda.

Portman Portman albinos right now it sounds like bill 674010.

What are the chances for an unknown veep choice.

Unknown amount.

Very.

Zero I think the answer is I think the answer for a cautious player like Mitt -- I think -- All right but the chances are very high that you enjoy that segment without -- thank you we thank you for the great story today thank you can thank you for myself okay we're gonna take it.
