I confess that few things move me more deeply than a profound appreciation for the men and women.

Who Wear the uniform of the united states military.

Realize this.

There is just as human as the rest of us but I also recognize that they have volunteered.

To willingly do that which few of us will ever have to contemplate.

Putting their lives between our liberty.

And the evil forces who would seek to destroy it.

While traveling about meeting people on planes in May -- -- events or even on the street I'm still taken aback when somebody says today thank you for your service.

While I did volunteer for the sausage grinder of elective politics for nearly twenty years and I continue to speak out of battle on radio in print and speeches and of course on television.

I hardly view anything I've ever done as heroic far from it.

But what I consider the actions of our servicemen and women.

I think of true heroes.

Not the kind of phony heroes that we create out of celebrities of sports entertainment -- for that matter politics.

I'm talking real heroes.

The kind who are incredibly underpaid.

Under appreciated.

And who will still do some of their most extraordinary work while being shot -- trying to avoid stepping on our driving over a crudely designed bomb.

It's disguised in place where they travel.

It's thanks.

Notice they may be thrust into a situation.

Where the lives of their closest friends as well as their own depend on their actions.

If they live to tell about it they might end up with a little decoration on their chest.

But just as likely they might end up coming home and a flag draped coffin.

And having that flag presented to a surviving family member with the words from a grateful nation.

When I was governor I participated in a number of military funerals and sometimes I was called upon to present the flag to the family of a fallen hero.

As I spoke the words -- grateful nation.

I always hoped and prayed that we would be a grateful nation.

Most days we're not grateful enough.

A single day a year to honor their service and sacrifice it's a good thing.

But it is -- adequate to fully express our gratitude to the men and women who do far more to keep -- -- That all the politicians celebrities are the wealthy and healthier minus.

As we observe Memorial Day we -- to bow our heads close our eyes and thank god for our veterans living.

It's okay -- and our way of life.

But.

Here's something else let's put them at the front of the line for the benefits they have -- with their blood.

And the rest of us.

Can standing.

-- -- -- And only if something is left over should we have the audacity to ask for our collect.
