And some thoughts from the chief of naval operations the navy's top sailor.
But first I'm joined by a member of our maritime services to tell us about fleet week I am pleased to introduce lieutenant JG Chris.
United states Coast -- 2008 graduate -- -- the United States Coast Guard Academy and now.
A lieutenant -- and -- -- tell -- something about yourself -- -- firmer it's virtually from Richardson Texas outside Dallas.
Right not a place straight save a lot of naval operations I've -- -- yarn maritime services so why did you decide to kind of assessment -- Well I I just wanted to serve my country and I came from a lower income family and be able to go to school.
He answered my country's an -- the Coast Guard while being able to play football in college was.
I was so so Friday night life yeah -- it after an academy absolutely.
Can't tell you what I hear what is your career in the past I -- -- -- I got got to assume that you're considering the Coast Guard as a career -- you're not thinking of getting out a few years this is -- Career path what will your career.
We're willing your particular remark has submissions -- kinds -- prices well it's been really if -- -- so far it's been my first years on a ship out of Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Which venture seemingly enough we spend most of our time the Caribbean doing turn our products -- -- humanitarian assistance -- -- an addiction.
And now I find myself that a land base unit -- conduct while portion missions.
I managers seeking help her grams.
And from here really the the sky's the limit so we'll just we'll just you it's the future holds and -- -- where you live now wearing your parents sent a currently station on Staten Island co stars.
Our friends overboard at -- an hour or.
And when you say am accustomed to -- -- -- litigation counsel the fan law enforcement what does that mean drug interdiction.
It's definitely absolutely.
I as a board Yasser responsible for going out offshore importing.
A large commercial vessels -- in the -- in new York New Jersey.
In another role like kind of manage your -- is operations on do -- -- a weekly basis.
And so that keeps us involved in enforcing federal laws on the high -- with in coastal waters and insuring.
Or prevent -- rather any acts of terrorism.
-- -- you're right -- in command of the ship it goes out it sees a commercial mass for coming and you say what -- say.
But if your guys say well they say were the United States -- started a lot of this is -- -- before -- with the -- agent and whatnot.
Reform them for a reason for being there which is to enforce all applicable federal laws and regulations.
-- we go on board to make sure the vessel and its crew are operating consistent with industry norms and standards.
Have you ever been in a situation where these guys -- who they were supposed to bring.
No I haven't personally although that's a separate from time -- time and and more often than you might imagine we find does stowaways on board.
And we were very -- -- Customs and Border Protection and many other agencies in the -- to.
Is -- is an issue really enforce a federal laws and keep the waters of new York New Jersey asserts they -- it.
You're the one -- time NASA and the bad guys and then house and the good guys just but I'm getting the New York where Baghdad period that's correct.
OK with -- here here in new York and you just participated in fleet week today is the last day fleet week.
It's that week.
Every year for one week where the United States maritime services come to new York and structures south and as -- insecure -- -- fact that cities have different -- in New York.
All right quick -- I tell Georgia -- wait -- Well I actually have a little bit of a different perspective than most people I was on the planning team and there's also irresponsible for the coast guard's involvement.
And and -- week so staffing events making sure that people got where they need to be.
But also had the opportunity to participate in a number of events they're just real blacks I mean honestly everything from.
Media relations projects the media events -- parades really was an excellent actually.
Yeah I think -- around I think it's -- -- -- -- land and maritime services Camden new York and yeah.
Look at our goods are actually and I got a part is that -- -- and being here Charles thank you guys spent and fact that military services do a lot of OOZ list might for example -- have -- -- Well that we've had done numerous events that boys and girls clubs struggle you're -- -- add to our viewers were showing the parade of ships.
I'm -- -- and lieutenant had to tell me in a minute about that old.
Looking ship but tell me first about the activities that you do around here -- Sure so home.
For submerged near relations events we partner with the boys and girls clubs Brooklyn and Harlem Bronx as well -- -- local Girl Scouts organizations to.
Kind provides -- for incurred guidance for these young girls.
Now -- and we're looking right now are some very old fashioned looking ships -- Saturday.
That's the -- that before that there were some clippers sure sure so I can't speak for safer some of these -- navy ships but.
The want to cause if he did see was -- Coast Guard cutter eagle.
Which is America's tall ship and she was -- we we've.
And -- out with the Eagles -- the game though is that Coast Guard -- that way is used -- Well we actually I received the eagle -- war to.
It was it was originally -- German vessel.
Now we uses a cadet training vessel so.
Every -- it will spend between six or seven weeks on board during -- -- things were seen a shift of leadership.
And so I think so and then in other words the coast -- learn how to actually sale that has issued a sale and I just pressing a button on no matter I didn't come found I don't know where they know how to actually -- -- absolutely and they -- would have been -- in combat.
No really good songs it.
Did he was originally -- is -- -- Schiffer -- -- as well.
And and so I can't speak -- -- experience but as I mentioned we do use it every summer throughout the year for training purposes.
So did you sail that ship and they did how I got your statement they have absolutely we winner in Europe.
I have to -- summer to.
Okay and I you -- think about the academy just.
But I've I'm sure probably good enough shape to participate and long distance running events that I gathered -- services also had a run a script America and tell me about that.
Sure what a person participating -- that United States marine core organized run.
World Trade Center right and they had I believe around 400 participants.
Meaning Marines but some other service personnel as well.
And they ran down to ground zero yesterday and I don't -- exact route that is along those lines about what they already know I'm now.
Having braking and -- what.
That's got -- SC NSA's Marine Corps.
Run Maine looks like they are going down -- ground zero.
Running down they have westside of Manhattan.
And so you didn't have.
A chance to do that and I know was an experience.
Right now how do you find Staten Island.
Are you posted very you have -- base there were found -- miles.
Yeah we have cars because Kurds and largest operational field commander is look here are four walls were stuck -- And we do a number of -- -- for operations are there from.
-- inspections and other regulatory inspired practices -- law enforcement.
Search and rescue.
So you name -- we do it here.
And and Staten Island.
And you've got to have chosen pretty unusual career path from Casey Guerrero where premiums and high scores -- -- -- in New York when you.
Even with your short haircut got a lower Manhattan and probably got -- -- you know have a good time on the wrist.
People do when they see you in uniform and I say wow me tell me about your life tell me about your career.
Because it seems like such a different -- -- -- and your family and you.
Well it's been it's been -- -- you stand -- largest city New York is really open -- arms to welcome us and it's really think his first service.
It really is it treats it would air act with citizens it is said there's so supportive.
It's it's it's really been a great experience.
I think it's a New Yorkers especially since September 11 all of a sudden people in uniform of the cash you really -- -- on your side absolutely any of us who were here for.
And immigrants.
Saw what happened lost friends lost family really means a lot to us I think that's planning -- -- Professional -- her for this week despite the fact that as sex in the city says it's a great time to hell Harry thought that but it's a great time steroids say thank you to the men and women and persons.
So what's next for you.

Fact life as usual so -- of operations.
And now there were winding down with fleet week.
We're gonna go back and -- and see if there's anything we can be better for next year.
But -- largely -- back to two life as we know it.
And one last question about -- said that there were there is in the parade of ships there were foreign vessels from what other countries participated.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Colombia Finland.
