There's a showdown under way in the House of Representatives right now -- are controversial -- That would ban gender based abortions choosing a boy choosing a girl during early stages of pregnancy.
So moments ago Republicans wrapped up a news conference saying that the bill is necessary they believe to preserve the civil rights of unborn children.
But Democrats say that they believe the bill violates women's rights.
Today what we're going to vote on is whether or not.
In the land of the free and the home of the brave that we are going to allow little girls to be killed before they're born simply because -- little girls.
This war on women continues.
And this quite frankly is a shocking battle in this war it really is shocking and -- Don't get me wrong.
Of course we all are opposed to sex selection based on gender.
That's not what this is not about women's health care.
And gender discrimination.
A very emotional battle in this in this.
Area so gene Monahan gene -- joins me now.
Family research council and after Kathleen London -- a family practice physician I think a lot of folks would listen to the introduction to this -- And say you know it is this it is this a growing problem in the United States of America where people are actually opting.
To choose abortion if they are not happy with the sex of their child.
Right and and we know of course that the problem is worse in Asia that that nobody's -- dispute that but it is a growing problem in the United States.
We're looking at reports coming out of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on live births.
And the disparities between boys and girls of certain populations can't be argued it's not naturally happening unfortunately.
Actor -- do you agree with those studies -- know they're different reputations of these studies actually the statistics do not indicate that the US has a problem with sex selective abortion.
If fact the sex ratio which is a number of baby boys that are born -- thousand baby girl has actually been decreasing slightly over the last thirty years so in 1983 there were 1052.
Boys for every thousand girls.
In the US and in 20092048.
Were born for every thousand -- also this does not suggest that -- -- emerging we're not we're talking here about specific ethnic populations within the United States nobody's gonna argued that the disparity between boys and girls being -- the live birth.
Reported from the CDC of certain ethnic populations that -- something's not wrong there.
Seven and then it and that seven next step on that it say when when you we always say that we're gonna do these -- based on civil rights protection.
But did not actually had.
Any impact on the entrenched gender bias that actually underlying this practice and that's what needs to be addressed here.
-- -- we need to be X you know in other countries if you look it -- not these bands we're not only ineffective but they actually further exacerbate this gender discrimination that underlines the one that's right I don't.
Let me ask you this seat in a -- there's a dispute over whether or not it is an an increasing problem in this country.
But that is it not sending that we can all agree on that it's wrong we added that a doctor if somebody says you know I want another sex so that I can decide whether or not -- wanna carry this child.
Do you believe at -- and doctor should should never carry out an abortion based on that kind of this.
Isn't I it is none of us is gonna agree that -- the majority of Americans don't how ever yet the look at that.
Of abortions occur long before we can know what the facts of the child ends so this is really not turning into some giant problem.
And then -- putting out an -- and nobody actually I -- new blood -- blood tests are showing especially overseas.
But also here in the United States they are a little bit more expensive but we can detect sex chromosomes in a much.
Younger -- At this stage I mean it's true that ultrasound it'll be more like sixteen to twenty weeks of development.
But either you're an innocent he says or blood test you can detect -- -- agenda -- -- Caroline Kennedy the argument here of course from the other side is that this is being used as a way to to curb.
Abortions in this country.
And added that it's it's not you you know an issue that that has -- is seriously escalating.
In -- is America it is that when -- is it being used as a way to sort of couldn't you know get in and close the door.
-- pro life people in this country.
-- -- well you know I mean this is a common sense bill.
You're seeing that the majority of Americans 77%.
In a recent opinion people agreed that this is something that should be done.
No absolutely not and a little girl is not given the right to be born.
Is going to not have any other rights for the rest of her life I mean this is that this is truly a war against little women for gonna talk about the war on women but not minus that's an argument -- -- if anybody is is opting to not have a girl.
That is the ultimate war on women I think everybody can agree with that -- back against a -- sixty not bear this out and just put the position in a position rather than just being a -- and -- -- and definitely can't -- shot -- -- -- yeah let me share data.
Please let me start acumen and finish and we accept limit back on an act on it you're putting a position in a position of being an investigator a judge and jury and that is just not a position.
We're job -- not.
-- we we do expect at physicians to be epic -- and we would certainly hope that they would be in this case an and that they would not advise abortions based on somebody's choice of whether or not there one have a quarter of -- After London thank you very much good to have you here -- my hand thank you as well.
