Lead story right now Fox's -- moments ago the national unemployment rate ticked up to eight point 2%.
And employers only added 69000.
Jobs last month -- not the 155000.
They were hoping for so.
Not good news for the White House -- a lot of people across this country dress right now for reaction we've got the mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina mayor Anthony -- you're -- into.
Hi Steve well we got a little bad news this morning that number not go in the right direction.
Well you know look we're we're still trying to recover as a country from.
Find from from -- kind of economic standpoint.
But what I wanna say about that is that the moving average is actually.
In the right direction in in Charlotte in particular which was particularly hard hit by the economic downturn.
-- number in April was eight point 1% we have two weeks before we hear the next number but.
We're actually seeing substantial downturn from where we were in terms of unemployment.
Yes and I do believe -- you know better than -- but at one point was an unemployment there in Charlotte north of 10%.
Yes it was.
So and so so what it has been doing because you know there's so many places that are desperate for jobs and you've got in some cases people -- -- up for jobs and Charlie.
Yeah you know that that the reality is is that we have to do it all of the above strategy to try to create jobs and in our country we've had a great run.
Of success in the financial sector in Charlotte and we.
We -- still the second largest financial service and in the country we have 84 fortune 500 companies in Charlotte.
And many of those companies are in different areas energy is one of the areas we think Charlotte will grow.
In the long term we've actually grown 5000 jobs in the energy sector even during the recession so.
We're continuing to branch out of some new areas and also we should never forget small businesses 90% of the jobs in our area.
Our small business jobs and so when we create the access to -- create the venues for small businesses to emerge we helped to grow the economy.
Of course you should have a pretty good summer there in Charlotte because the democratic national.
Can I committee is going to -- convention is going to be there.
-- first week in September I do believe NC gonna have tens of thousands of people in your town which is really good news -- I'm curious your reaction the fact that over the last couple weeks and some on the Democrat side have suggested.
Then maybe we shouldn't have the convention in North Carolina given the fact that with this same sex.
Marriage amendment that passed just a couple of weeks -- Look you know I think if we were to wait for.
A state where everyone agrees on every single thing we would never have a convention.
North Carolina is a perfect place for convention and frankly it's a swing state in the definition of a swing state is that it swings -- whose.
In both directions.
Depending on the issue this is a state that elected progressive governors like Terry Sanford and Jim Hunt.
It's also a state that elected Jesse Helms and so.
We are are gonna have to fight for every vote we get in the election but at the end of the day I think North Carolina is a perfect backdrop for this convention.
Well at the end of the summer -- looking forward to dropping by your fair city down there in Charlotte mayor -- thank you very much for joining us live.
Thank you good to see you currency and.
