New reaction today to a proposed ban on big cups of sugary drinks.

As critics question whether the food police have finally gone too far.

New York mayor Michael Bloomberg has called to ban the sale of sugary drinks or verse sixteen ounces in size this is well over.

And reaction from both sides of this argument has not stopped.

-- New York is not the only place the food police are cracking down.

We put together a focused panel on this issue they join me now on set so we've got folks from all stripes here who some of whom are actually into nutrition health and so on and have.

Some very strong opinions on this.

Mayor Bloomberg says he needs to help us save us from ourselves.

And we obesity an epidemic he sick and tired of paying for the New York City taxpayers paying for it and he wants it.

To stop Sarah -- your picks fitness expert what say you.

I think it's a great idea someone has to sound the alarm on and I mean it's costing America millions of dollars and be billions of dollars and healthcare.

Plus.

It might -- a little bit better if he regulates have asked the manufacturers to regulate how mature he made Clinton their drinks and an -- product.

-- -- -- only needed to consumers because studies have shown when consumers have a choice for something healthier when they keep our -- from something.

That is not so good for them they don't do it -- him so I yes it is a little bit of a police state but -- it is.

We need it now how how that we've got -- obesity epidemic in this country and our kids are getting fatter we're getting fatter people are dying younger.

And we don't seem to so why shouldn't we have the state save us has -- Michael.

I think it's actually -- really good idea but the question is does the government in division is there a direct line to the outcome that's desired.

Because although I think this is a good idea the question is could we have done this with -- by incentivizing restaurants to cut down.

On the amount that they put in the glasses.

Does it obviate the need for government intervention at that point -- on the other hand.

You know if we're talking about this in in in in the context of obesity are we cutting down on the other stuff that kids are reading whether it's you don't care and -- -- -- -- we talk about this actually on the program earlier that his -- -- -- -- -- and ban trans fats now school -- lunches are much more regulated and they were we were growing up.

And yet still listen -- -- We're getting fatter and fatter and it's because of the evil things better in cups like this is -- it's not actually what is it because about moderation and as a mother of three little ones I'm gonna tell you that it starts in the home.

And we have to be responsible as Americans and it's not the government's job to tell me.

What to feed my children and how much I can happen.

And quite frankly I never even drink and drink and something of of that and that you do lots of people are doing it well you -- -- really -- stop doing it and know what's right from wrong and take responsibility.

For themselves but they don't -- -- -- says they don't.

He he fuel like this year -- dumb -- naked and Mayor Bloomberg is gonna see you from yourself you've done guns out there who have -- -- -- these big -- are you -- Marc Rich.

-- help you just -- more smaller ones first know you want it too lazy now you'll buy more smaller ones if you really wanna stop the problem.

Just slap a big old tax on it like you do with cigarette shock shock that may deter some people from using it it also may help defray the costs for those who don't stop.

Studies have proven that.

A tax -- products like this does deter people from buying it.

But is that really the answer taxes more I think.

You me -- it -- Clark why is it mayor Bloomberg's business if I wanna drink myself silly with the sugary soda.

Because we can't afford it is a finance guy -- so I had kind of insurance while he doesn't pay for my ailments.

But he pays for a lot -- the government pays for a lot of people's health insurance and we can afford.

Dead and help the facts of the 32 ounce big gulp that someone might have every day only someone right okay now I am a relatively thin person.

-- that what is mere -- say I can't have it in the 1950s.

An average drink -- he went to a diner and got -- couple points to -- it was four to six ounces but.

Perception and what's available to the consumer and changes -- choices then and now we have 32 ounces and is presented as -- just the largest regular serving inside.

And we're getting really fat people have supersize everything ever order room service not a hotel and that you don't get a little -- in this like a five -- it's -- you get ten -- you get to -- people think.

The spots to clear their place because people are starting -- Don't anybody to buy the biggest thing on the -- close your mouth exercise in self restraint.

He won't gain a thousand panels but there's.

Not doing it that's the problems are -- and that's what you tell because that people are not doing it -- that message has been given you know -- eat less drink less this is bad for you.

They're not listening so do we need Mayor Bloomberg.

Yes we do I mean I think in America we always think about bigger is better this is one of those cases where bigger is not better you can -- not.

Double your caloric intake for your lunch meal with their Coke.

You don't need thirty ounces of soda and so.

Just know me I get your relative term and when you have that big popcorn movie theater in an outside now -- -- -- -- -- -- -- but the calories next of that big popcorn -- -- over 2000 palace which is a full day's worth of calories.

And that -- it worked struggling with obesity epidemic and you know one of the reasons is because we drink too much -- doctors the first thing that can't tell you in terms -- losses should -- out it could diet and not get right to tell -- -- let me ask you because you're nutritionist you are in favor of this band.

But do you see any hypocrisy.

Here by the mayor who today is celebrating national don't know today.

Andy is we can't have -- sewed up that we are -- me now I'm -- kind of and that.

-- -- -- I think what we need to understand is that this sodas don't just cause obesity.

They -- -- chef our bones and organs we are the crater -- as human beings are the very substance that makes our bodies.

Deteriorating because of these substances but I was pleased that press saturated fat and how would start banning stock yes this a first step to small -- with goodness.

We need.

We need take responsibility is as in many people of sadness and panel and we need to start -- -- them raising alarm bells around me since these people aren't paying attention to.

Nobody look at what it looked -- -- right but it's not good for you right.

But Julie tell put so much butter and everything she -- to be human nice isn't sure it was noted we didn't hear about is not a Carson and -- -- and I believe that he does he what does this is an example and you have my own and a 97 years old almost I've never gonna talk to nutrition hair like she always says -- is a -- drink or something that my system.

-- -- that -- and I felt that that she -- yeah.

-- -- -- -- More added sugars in things these days and there were fifty years ago it's unbelievable and soda is the number one source about it -- in our guys have been natural -- that you find.

In you know fruit and -- other foods.

It's added sugars -- -- -- is a big culprits are the number one culprit then and back to what you're saying about a year and you don't have to worry about it I'm in I -- quite that way.

You know record compile whenever people -- invents -- and is not.

So it is -- problem because it also can read -- LDL or bad cholesterol levels your bad blood fat levels in moderation daily selling -- moderation.

Shouldn't Americans be able to make choices for -- and even force in healthy people can take up an unhealthy choice could have -- lots of pizza shop or.

Lots of real -- Full fat ice cream.

Absolutely.

-- -- the fact of the matter is Mayor Bloomberg is the enemy of liberty and anyone who wants to tell you or anyone else.

What you can eat or drink is really.

Interfering with your simple pleasures it's it's it.

He's no longer content to be the mayor he would rather be our walks child -- -- -- and or some individual of that strike we're being reduced to the surface of some sort.

The other question is you know as I mentioned a moment ago where does it stop our if you're if you're gonna except it's -- -- -- -- a first step.

How many steps are we gonna take because Jon Stewart making this point last night look around New York City right -- here's in part and how he made the point.

Motors for a quick bad you don't chicken wings better be frightened talked about -- melted -- served -- -- bowl of she's.

Top it all off with a little bit of up frozen hot chocolate from -- deputies.

-- really really really -- -- until.

I want -- wash -- down.

-- and -- county you actually wrote the book.

I'm naked calories.

What do you think -- get a point I think we have to ask ourselves the question.

Who will watch the watchers themselves you know I don't think anybody's more passion than I am about helping to fix the obesity epidemics.

But I don't think we can regulate our way out of our obesity problem here in America we cannot just take away the fundamental rights of an individual.

Which is what America was founded on we start to take away our ability to make choices as to what side so we -- happy.

Maybe next time is what -- -- I can have yet maybe next time it's you know can I raise my child as a -- or vegetarian or Helio.

You know we do not need government in there telling us how we should handle our nutrition.

I mean -- pregnant and they're gonna serve Boller played in restaurants on the -- -- -- he read me look good.

And that's what got her.

Start taking money out of schools and not allowing kids to be come part of his Ed programs and taken athletics out of school.

Then government's got to do something to talk to start and -- yeah.

I'm on one side we -- Government regulates there's no arsenic in -- chicken and there's no unhealthy toxins and so we have there's no there's not an overwhelming amount of pesticides in certain foods we -- do you ask government yet you can look at sugar is toxic.

And actually recent paper and journal nature researchers propose that shouldn't be real rate regulated like the toxic substance like alcoholics back up that.

Doing -- I think every isn't going to be like just this salad but no drastic yeah.

I have -- he's just saying you can't have thirty ounces at one time and if you want to do what about that was gonna do an.

Yeah.

It really hasn't developed a sudden here's a question you that I and then I got it up didn't it isn't it.

There aren't regulating so you have to -- the calories on the front of the product.

Isn't that his -- give the people -- don't give -- information so they know go ahead drink if you want but it's -- it's getting.

There he wanted to break if you want to drink yourself to death it's your business you're not blown smoke in my face go ahead and drink yourself.

Like my great announced -- we need.

So -- how we tell addictive substance says in this country a lot of addictive substances because I told them.

And soda has tons of sodium as well -- -- so.

You drink it you get -- -- and you need more and more and we'll have a ton of sodium may be -- eviction Khat crackdown on and that I mean big question is where president.

Great discussion you get to great thank you -- so much.
