Presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney campaigning.
Whereas guy you may have heard of his name's Paul Ryan he's a congressman from Wisconsin and Wisconsin figures very heavily into the fall.
And guess what we get to do a dry run.
Right here in the badger state on Tuesday with the recall election the Democrats brought out against Wisconsin governor Scott Walker and this is power play and I am Chris -- -- And we are in Madison Wisconsin can you believe that we are right here in Madison Wisconsin.
Now there -- a lot of people who know a lot of things about Wisconsin politics but guess what nobody knows more.
And my friend Steve -- from the weekly standard he's a senior writer for the weekly standard argument you.
But I doubt -- -- how about this if we make -- -- if we make it a loop and we say nobody knows more about Wisconsin politics.
And fried cheese it.
And right and cured meats and craft beer beer that's true that I cloture you just -- that's the thing about politics you just have to make the clause correct and then it will be true that's how that works.
All right so obviously Steve we're here because they're gonna have this recall election on Tuesday.
I was out with -- -- in the team for fresh report crisscrossing the state yes they had a total blast it was absolutely great.
You had a different day.
That was an interesting day I came in.
And I went to see Scott Walker I give a speech -- greet people at a victory center in German town which is outside of Milwaukee about twenty minutes.
And then went to a rally a get out the vote rally labor get the vote rally featuring Jesse Jackson.
Com on the northwest side of Milwaukee and it was.
-- -- -- -- What about you you later if a few things that they said and I'm sure you've already -- over the weekly standard right I have indeed yet but they're give us some highlights.
Well and it it was a very inquisitive about 500.
Seats in this said it's -- the deaths destiny.
Youth plaza.
500 seat there about 250 of them filled many with.
Union leaders labor leaders.
And there were a series of short speeches that proceeded Jesse -- speech and I would say Jesse Jackson was probably the most moderate of all of the speakers.
That might not got a sentence that writers from the weekly standard used a lot.
No I mean.
All he it was compare.
Compared Scott Walker to.
Governor Wallace.
From Alabama not not a super popular guy -- -- civil rights movement suggesting he was a segregationist.
And wanted to strip voting rights away.
But we had some I think some very aggressive language inappropriate language from several of the speakers the head of the amalgamated transit union.
Okay there's a -- there's a fried cheese place.
Knowing there's a price -- right there and there and there and then there made it ladies and gentlemen of the Internet you know Brett -- he just stand by for the she's on.
Yeah this is this is Internet television bit we're changing the face of the Internet right now Brett -- OK art I'm in no doubt that you should -- the right he can't we don't feel we don't prefer that term that's a pejorative terms Steve we prefer the term Internet television thank you very much about your way -- -- we have -- -- one question before you go what will we see -- special report tonight.
It is going to be we've been bounced around the state you aware that we had a total blast and we spent a lot of time in the car.
And we have both campaigns covered and we'll have that Governor Walker online at it.
And of one thing you'll also get to see is Brad at these locations around the state it's totally fine I was -- -- -- to do with it lost me.
Blades that we had.
Yeah.
I'm gonna save some special alone time for me now we didn't have the -- video -- -- video got lost I didn't leave with an eight -- -- -- -- Yeah -- -- with Steve and Steve as well right here at it here -- you like the personification under the embodiment take that account I -- never -- in the tonight so back to this it says so back to the serious business of politics.
At this rally just give us a sampling.
Of the kind of language.
So the the head of the amalgamated transit union from New York had flown -- he's organizing is transit workers most of us drivers and he gave a speech that began by saying.
We all remember eleven years ago that it in this country.
When we were attacked.
On 9/11 he went on to compare Scott Walker's budget reforms.
With the 9/11 attacks suggesting that they were similar so who's al-Qaeda in this scenario.
Al-Qaeda in this area what's interesting he sort of mixed his metaphors and and turned them around he suggested that they were that the walker reforms were in effect an attack on.
Public employees way in which case I guess Scott Walker then would be like al-Qaeda right.
But he later said that Scott Walker is trying to convince people that public employees are worse than -- -- sound and -- and that's basically a direct quote so.
So you so he is both.
Al-Qaeda and Karl Rove which I take it in this group is viewed not super little doubt you'll love people of this I'd say the truth about Wisconsin politics and this is this has been to really.
Said the state went through political reordering in the 1960s and into the seventy's it was -- part of a Nixon realignment.
In -- the -- was a democratic state essentially but there was room for moderate Republicans so it was a slight it was a light blue state.
Was essentially the norm for Wisconsin Barack Obama carried the state by fourteen points in 2008.
Now it's different this situation has changed in this state very dramatically and I'm -- West Virginia and.
I'm my home state is going through a realignment currently it's painful it's difficult.
But talk to us about now as a -- -- guy things are different now -- Wisconsin has as.
Wanted to become a blue a purple state -- from a blue state to a purple state.
Maybe get a red state for quite some time if you remember back to the 2000.
Elections.
Democrats won both in 2002004.
By a combined total of about 70500.
Votes so.
This was -- -- this wasn't these were two elections that were very very close before Barack Obama have the book that you suggest in 2008.
I think -- Wisconsin Republicans led by Scott Walker think that the state.
Is really turning you have.
Behind us you have a legislature that is dominated by Republicans the state senate is now evenly divided.
With the retirement of one republic.
-- Republican member but the assembly is dominated by Republicans the governor is a Republican.
Com and you've got increasingly prominent Republicans from Wisconsin on the national scene you've got Ron Johnson.
Who is elected in the 2010 wave as a Tea Party Republican is strong spokesman for conservatism.
In Washington Paul Ryan that we Paul Ryan of course Paul Ryan -- I would say is doing more to shape the policy agenda Republican Party than anybody.
Wright's previous Bryan Adams he writes in rhymes with time and don't forget that that's the -- If that's very good point we have something I've never thought it that we remember you come up with I don't know probably Paris and -- just ask just ask him.
-- -- -- -- -- previous gave a speech yesterday.
At this Scott Walker in Germantown and he said you know.
Or Scott Walker actually was speaking -- you know I I grew up in delve -- small town called element.
And fifteen miles to my west.
Was Paul Ryan they're roughly the same agent twenty miles to my east was Wright's previous -- and that's quite a corridor of the Republican thinking it's a chord or over.
Public image that the state is essentially -- this -- and you need to -- this -- because this is going to be very important in the -- this state is going to be a battleground -- Barack Obama leads in the real -- average of -- By just a few points.
This is going to be hard -- no matter why.
But the way to remember the state is this is that there's basically dividing line down the middle out to what no player or some thing.
Which is you have -- western part of the say that's a lot like Minnesota heavily democratic democratic farmer labor party kind of folks and then on the eastern side of the state.
You got a bunch of Sheboygan.
German republic and enthusiasm and it's so it's a bright so the way it was a purple -- was that it was a bright red state and a bright blue state right combined into one and it created a truce.
What Tom -- big blue dot in Milwaukee right exactly now what Tom Barrett that governor the mayor of Milwaukee who's the democratic candidate to replace walker.
Is trying to do is turn it back to those old days he says we don't want to be.
A red state or a blue state we can hold here in the purple I wrote today in my power play which you can get simply by following me -- -- firewall on Twitter.
I -- today that's not gonna happen you agree.
That it -- gonna go back in time in.
I would be surprised given the consistency we've seen in polling over the past six weeks.
With Scott Walker only once as I recall.
Fallen below 50% and I think that was on -- but democratic poll that was leaked.
To the media he's been above 50% there's some anecdotal evidence that the margin of victory he goes on to win.
Might be even larger because people who Democrats that supported bear it and some independents.
Don't necessarily love Scott Walker but they object to the recall process object to the recall process and also object to the idea of having to re litigate all of this all over again I'm sure.
-- we stay with us because we need we need we need your help and I wanna say this just because I want to be a little mushy.
Steve loves this state so much it's so sincere and it's so humbly offered it's really it's nice to be around.
-- we're gonna take a quick break but then we're gonna start talking to these Wisconsin polish politicians when we come back -- Stick around.
