-- -- defending its efforts to find voters were not eligible to vote the governor of Everett Scott calls the process of removing those voters as necessary to have fair elections critics -- the purge discrimination John fund national affairs columnist.
The national reviews on this John good morning -- you thank you federal law all ten years ago 2002 told the states to do what.
It said the federal government has a responsibility.
To force the states to clean up their voter rolls if they're full of dead what people are ineligible to vote.
If holder Justice Department has abandoned that completely ballots blocking states that are trying to get rid of non citizen voters on the rolls.
It's ridiculous the federal government asserts that Florida can't do this but that's flatly contradicted by the law they're gonna lose in court I think they're just trying to delay the removal of these names from a role you will a delay until after November's my assumption.
That seems to be a political move.
But you know look this is a real problems Florida two weeks ago found 53000.
Dead people on its order registration rolls.
There's a fine but you have -- happens but but I guess it was a case in Missouri 2009 that was dropped.
In Missouri -- government had been pursuing Missouri saying clean up your voter -- as soon as Eric Holder became attorney general he -- that case.
And look the it's not as if non citizens aren't voting.
And NBC affiliate in Fort Myers, Florida found over a hundred people who had been voting even though there were non citizens this is a real problem.
We've got to do something about this one or the other side but argues that Rick Scott's only going after minorities.
What they -- -- that well in Florida.
It's not surprising that most of the non citizens will be from Latin American countries -- Mexico right.
Now so.
It's not discriminatory.
If you're dealing with a population.
That by definition is going to be largely Hispanic and we were roughly -- immigrants from Florida come from however there were 16100 potential suspects I guess in Miami Dade County big county it strong high population and southeast Florida turned up only to non citizens.
Out of 16100.
That was down is that proof that this system works or is this a suggestion that.
Perhaps this is not that big of a deal in the -- after all Florida is doing is asking people that are flagged as non citizens present proof of citizenship you know we could make this a whole lot easier but the Department of Homeland Security refuses to give the state of Florida the information it has some who is a non citizen in this country they're the ones who track these people so the federal government first won't cooperate with Florida in giving the names of the non citizens -- -- price to use driver's license records.
It says no you can't do that but that's flatly contradicted by the law -- don't -- words they don't want the roles because -- -- -- I've got to -- -- -- in -- solve this before November -- -- -- an -- five months now.
I think we can do it this is gonna end up in court it depends whether the court allows us -- while the litigation goes forward I will pick it up again next time okay thank you very on the phone with us.
