Well new concerns this morning over a popular -- method that is why didn't -- to say but.
A panel of medical experts is now warning that the active chemical used in spray on ten times.
May actually cause genetic defects you talk about this doctor guards and his board certified dermatologist.
And clinical assistant professor of dermatology at NYU medical center good to see doc thanks for coming in so too much sun is bad tanning beds are bad and now spray on fans are bad.
-- the entire cast of Jersey issuers and would we do now.
I know we just need to sit in a dark room that you don't have no emotions will look better look -- but that's obviously never gonna happen so we have to try to keep things in balance.
These studies are really back from the ninety's they'd none of them Madonna and human cells -- on humans they were done.
On -- cells and bacterial cells looking at different potential problems.
The problem here and that reason why they're talking about spray on -- is because.
The risk is from inhaling or ingesting this active ingredient -- -- a -- hydroxy -- -- Wiping on the hands initially we really thought that was only -- absorbed into the outer layers of dead skin cells and not into the body not a big deal.
Not a big deal but it turns out that less than one half of 1% of that ingredient does get absorbed into the body.
The significance of that is not known in the FDA so far -- not overly concerned.
So there's a lot of messages here and it can be somewhat confusing the -- -- -- I think that you raise is that these studies that we are citing this morning.
We're not done on humans right and and we really don't know what to make of them some more work needs to be done if you've been -- -- on tanning that's not a reason to panic.
But I would say that going forward.
Don't spray on -- on your face and protects -- not inhaling or ingesting that active ingredient.
And maybe look more at the whites don't look more than you have to do and if they're going to go in the -- do what the night before because it can even be some risk of interaction of this ingredient.
With the -- so I would use -- the night before.
I do still -- -- that the -- list tanner is the same active ingredient is safer than sun exposure.
So it's not an excuse to now they go back to the tanning filed to go back out of a sudden you'll want to send that message out.
I mean everybody feels better when they've spent some time outside in -- -- And a lot of people with sunscreen of course yes and a lot of people -- like the way they look they like the way they feel when they've got a little bit color in their face.
I was out.
You do well you can use a bronze -- so their great powder bronze or is that you can get from all different companies at all different price points.
And those look natural they're wonderful they go from wash to watch but that's fine.
And I really think you have been working with the skin cancer foundation on this campaign called go with Iran glow.
And we're trying to help celebrate your own natural skin color so if -- -- a little contoured little browns -- as good a little white on ten.
Once in awhile if you have an event and he wants a little collar but in a lot of other cultures really celebrate.
Your own natural skin tone and I think if we try to have to move in that direction a little bit with a -- -- economic kind of saw what that extreme can do and so hopefully we're moving back to a half.
Your medium to what do you tell your patients when they say -- today I like spending and time -- -- Where you know like being active out there what do you recommend me.
I encourage that yet as a dermatologist I I want my patients outdoors active living you know happy lifestyle it's not about a -- that but it's about being found Smart.
About avoiding midday sun exposure when you can using sun protection applying enough of -- and we applying often enough wearing a hat and physical protection when you can.
But you can do those things and really enjoy your time outdoors at I go on vacation once a year and I come back and on the same color that I started out with it it's doable and I you know it.
It's hard but it's doable takes a little more effort but it's so worth -- we -- skin cancer every day this can be life threatening even and and disfiguring besides premature aging.
Real quickly for little kids you mentioned re applying often do you need to re -- on kids every two hours more often if you're swimming -- -- sweating it off you can -- -- Get great some protective clothing as well.
Try to stay in the shade when you can.
All right doctor Doris Day who is an assistant professor of dermatology NYU medical center but to -- you thanks so much for coming in thanks for -- market some good advice up here.
