The -- President Obama and governor Mitt Romney's campaigns have been accused each other being out of touch with average Americans.

Here's Mitt Romney is slamming the president's recent comments on the economy watch.

And he said the private sector is doing fine.

-- she really that out of touch.

I think he's defining what it means to be attached and out of touch with the American people.

-- well president Obama's reelection campaign hit back on that of course and they said this quote.

We would be happy to have a debate about -- is out of touch with middle class Americans with Mitt Romney -- -- solution on how to strengthen the economy is to fire.

More people that's according to Stephanie Cutter.

President Obama deputy campaign manager that was I'm starting points -- Karl Rove joins me now is former senior advisor and deputy chief of staff to president George W.

Bush is also -- Fox News.

Contributor Carl.

Out of touch is to be catch phrase of the week both sides and I think.

In many ways the Obama team you know sort of always thought that would be an easy thing to.

To argue with that -- because he's very wealthy you know -- idea that he was out of touch with the common man.

Was an idea they felt pretty self -- Yeah they did but the problem was that -- Obama's policies are not like by American people so and his world view isn't necessarily well accepted.

Remember earlier this year the administration went out said.

You know we're going in the right direction and then stopped and after a month or two because.

If people don't think we're going in the right direction of two thirds of the American people think his policies of either hurt or had no effect on the economy.

And at 26% in the latest Gallup are satisfied with the condition the country.

A third of the people think we're going in the right direction nearly two thirds think we're going in the wrong direction.

So this is not this is not that that the big winner that the Obama campaign thought it would be and particularly after last Friday Friday was of course that.

President's comment -- said the private economy is doing -- when I'm worried about a state and local government workers we got to do more to help them.

I mean unemployment is among among state and local government employees is four point 2%.

Almost I am more than happy headed next time -- the national average Cynthia I mean and that's been part of the focus of this conversation sort of firefighters teachers.

Government extension of government workers really any you're saying that that's not really where that where the problem it.

And it does it -- and look where we really don't have good numbers on this -- for example here on career firefighters before the economic problems started.

It was 3171000.

-- career firefighters in 2010 last year for which we have numbers there's 335000.

But more important -- these three initials MOE.

And most of the stimulus measures the administration has insisted on what's called maintenance of effort.

In other words it's a state or local -- once you get money from the stimulus.

Stiffed it -- -- government employs on the payroll it's gotta agree that it will keep spending as much money as it did in the previous -- year it will maintain its spending efforts.

So this that if the stimulus monies have been aimed at adding to the numbers of state and local government employees not simply maintaining them at their current levels -- Spend -- we've -- giving you in the past and then argued to us why you need more money and then you'll be eligible why spend what you were spending in the past and I will give you big role so you can add to it.

Yeah in the larger question of being out of touch and I think active President Bush the first President Bush's sort of infamous moment at the grocery store counter where he didn't know what the scanner was and that isn't -- -- missing campaigns.

-- people looked backed him and said you know that was a moment when people looked at him and and decided.

You know perhaps and justifiably that he was out of touch with American people that that notion seemed to -- to grab.

Attention.

You know Mitt Romney still -- is to accomplish that there's large groups of voters that he is not that he could be accused of being out of touch with when you look at the poll numbers right.

How how does he sort of bridge that gap.

Well look -- his promise not so much of people think he's out of touch it's that they don't know enough about it there's a certain volume of information we need to have about -- -- honest I would say it kind of brought this forever -- did you know how did not know present the United States people know everything almost everything about you there's a lot of information they have.

About a challenger like we -- surveys of between twenty to 30% of the American people while they know who Romney is.

Don't feel they have adequate information about him and there's a race going on right now a race by Romney to sort of fill that.

You know sort of space with a definition his narrative of who he is -- a race by the Obama campaign to define their narrative.

Right now Romney's done slightly better job of that significantly better job of that and I thought he would do at this point in the Obama campaigns -- -- much less.

Clearly -- running folks believe that that the president gave them an opening with that comment about you about the private sector doing five.

I've even just directed that that that openings and for a good week -- them.

It seems Carl thank you very much consistently NCAA record -- -- welcome to Washington DC he sent you've been.
