-- hurricane season is right around the corner and who better to help us being prepared for any natural disaster he got to have your kid.

Chief David policy -- the former FEMA administrator is joining me live from Miami where so far it looks clear out great -- are.

It's so far it is clear where we appear ready for hurricane season when you just right we can't wait to the last minute when I've covered hurricanes and that's where I think I have met you previously.

We go to The Home Depot and we try to get all our stuff when we.

You know hit the ground running.

And that's not when people should do it they should always have their preparedness kit.

Yeah some great tips.

Ten actually on hurricane preparedness.

The first one is to stay informed I bought -- -- -- radio what are some of the other ways that we can be in the loop and get the information.

Was a tremendous -- information out there we learned so much after Hurricane Katrina.

And we're back we're doing webinars -- do three or four year.

Teaming with a small business administration and -- have a private company called agility recovery.

And they -- this private public partnership to get the word out to people to to individuals to business owners to city's emergency managers across the country.

Oh really what it takes what we've learned from those horrible lessons and Katrina and we're gonna actually better that -- -- access.

There's several sites are ready doesn't go FEMA dot gov small business SBA dot go prepare my business and daughter organ that's public one private web site.

Those are great ways to go to give you all the information you need to get your home ready get your business trading futures are you ready prepare for -- -- catastrophic event just got to come our way.

Right let's go there.

Back -- continue through the list reviewed -- plans I'm curious.

How many people in the family should really know the overall plan what do you do with kids and check your kid seems to me they go together.

They -- really does go together and it -- everybody in the family not just an individual.

That sure we need to know exactly what they're prepared to do they need to be part of that process of putting that -- together.

Makes him feel much more -- have much for coffin as to when we go to a storm -- hurricane or even a tornado coming around.

I 9/11 a cell service went down and that was an issue and certainly during our hurricane.

You me your phone may go out -- -- the flooding kills more people than the actual downpour so.

How do you ensure communication what is the best way.

For more than likely your phones are going to go down -- more than likely to cell sites are not going to work.

Off the time -- -- but the whole point of it is one have a portable radio battery powered.

But have a communication plan in place for your family so they know how you're gonna contact -- -- -- know where they're going to go you don't wait for the storm to hit.

Prepared of that now put those plans in place early make sure everyone knows what they're expected to do -- what were -- supposed to go with this form columns.

Also you say protect physical assets does that mean your home.

Absolutely you.

We walked -- my home every day we have storm shutters and the generator we make sure we have at least three days supply of food water.

Make sure the pets are taking care via food for them.

We've you're bringing everything from outside and put in the garage.

Because you would keep an envelope -- -- and when we do that.

Most home survive the storms that come through okay.

I imagine he'd been.

As a Xerox copy of important documents like the deed to your home that you or are other things you might need for insurance purposes later on it would be good to not keep them.

In the home but maybe get a safe deposit box in a bank.

There's several -- you can one you can put those together and put it with another family member.

In a different city -- different state that I get a lot of your document you can copy and put -- the cloud to connect to the cockpit electronically kept somewhere else.

But you -- should have -- at home but also have copies another place.

And again just go to those web sites the ready dot -- website particular for homeowners is extremely effective and walking you through all those things you need to do all the -- you need to take to protect you and your family assist.

Employees.

Is that our responsibility.

The the two assisted us and why is it in what way it is -- very very important to make sure your employees have a plan also.

We lose about 40% of -- small businesses after catastrophic event.

It primarily because they had the owners of those companies have not done anything to take care of their employees.

During hurricane Andrew.

We had to run 250 were far from -- homes and we didn't have a plan in place for them.

And we knew -- we didn't put a plan in place for those families to take care of them during disasters those those firefighters may not come back to work the next time.

So we did that and -- -- all business owners to have a plan in place for their employees for their families.

How you got to contact your employees is a going to be so secure web site is -- going to be through it telephone tree or use Twitter.

FaceBook all of those things almost social media thing throughout their now that make it much easier for us a contact for employees to make sure they're okay and their families are okay.

All right the last one and I have to leave it there as cash is king for sure you need the ATM's go down and a lot of people don't think about that.

I I encourage everyone to go to the sites you mentioned to be ready.

And -- I think that safest place to be is probably your house but you we -- safer now so thank you so much sir nice to see you project policy and thank you again.
