-- call MD is the all all of this book the -- pissed.
Baby guide to great sleep.
Hobby great to have you -- -- thanks for being here.
Thank you Jonathan I -- -- -- every parent off.
A baby is looking at this book and watching this not saying yes please tell me how I -- -- I recently.
What are the -- right.
Well you know and and tied into your former conversation this is really a Homeland Security issue.
Because their parents are so exhausted they're like drunk drivers out there we're losing our valuable citizens and car accidents because they're banging into each other -- -- -- And -- all joking aside sleep deprivation is such a serious burden on a family.
The military actually uses it to train our special forces.
To prepare them for enemy torture so I mean this is tough.
I'm so definitely watching -- You I don't care what how we -- how we gonna fix that for these sleep deprived backgrounds.
Okay what their lots of simple solutions the first step is starting the first couple of weeks of life and -- -- -- -- SARS waddling.
And using our rough wrongly kind of white noise that you play all night and all maps.
And you played about as loud it's a shallower wanna really did that would -- one of those white noise -- you combine hobby.
Well I really recommend this CD of white noise because it turns out that -- -- white noise which is what most of those machines are done is.
It's.
That gets your attention actually can make it hard for some people to sleep.
You need a rumbling sound you know how people fall asleep in the train or plane back -- thing.
You need that kind of -- sound that's what babies here in the womb in the womb it's louder than a vacuum cleaner 24/7.
That's what you're trying to imitate.
-- and that's another viewer -- it and it doesn't look there's always a lot of told -- -- babies are back.
Get them into a routine a bath time sleep time routine that you say you need to stop the routine a lot earlier than a couple of hours before bad time.
Yeah how well especially as kids get older you don't it's not like lights are on everyone's playing -- lights off and you go to bed.
-- for a lot of us and for a lot of adults for that matter we have too much light pollution.
Light turns off the brain's natural melatonin which is the sleep hormone so you don't want to go from bright lights to total darkness.
Have everybody start turning down the lights about an hour before bed time.
And turn on for the kids a little bit of white noise just in the background so their brains get prepared me for the message that sleep is coming.
And then of course for toddlers if they're struggling with sleep at night.
Make sure they're getting out getting lots of exercise getting lots of sun exposure.
To set their brains level and avoid caffeinated drinks like -- and iced -- and even dark chocolate can keep them awake at night.
My interest and and you also saying in the book that -- some myths about babies sleeping which weakened basically just ignore.
Job well what -- is that kids sleep through the night.
Nobody's that you don't sleep through the night we all wake up three or four times that night.
And we just go back asleep if if nothing is wrong but if we smell smoke -- we're gonna wake her right away.
If you always put your baby to sleep -- slide him in bed asleep.
They don't know how to put themselves to sleep and so when they wake up in the middle of the night then they go wait wait wait a second -- my mom go.
And what that leads to -- parents then bring their babies in bed with them because there's so exhausted -- the only -- the child falls asleep.
And 600 babies are dying each year in the United States.
Because they're sleeping in bed with their parents much safer to put the baby in a bassinet right next to the bad.
Right a couple of other -- Q you told -- -- delta which at the -- dressing was.
Tiptoeing around a sleeping baby and that rice cereal in the evening -- sleep neither of those -- true.
Now completely -- just the opposite.
I mean think about rice cereal for example it's march.
Why would it teaspoon -- -- storage.
Help a child sleep all night.
Led six or eight ounces of milk that's got protein and fat and carbohydrates and minerals and all sorts of stuff.
Why would that keep a child to sleep it's like a teaspoon of -- -- I scream what's gonna stay in your stomach longer.
-- and a the one -- you was riding in here Serra to mosques doctor would know the whole white employees.
CD that you're talking about.
Don't you eventually have to wean the baby off of that anyway isn't it that's doesn't do you create a problem for later on my guess is a point.
You know it's such a great question because parents are really afraid of creating these dependency is.
But they're good sleep cues and there -- bad sleep -- I mean we all have sleep can -- do you sleep on a pillow and a bad.
Do I don't yes.
OK when you go to a hotel do you are you dependent on all the going -- hotels that have pillows and beds.
Yes I mean you see my point we have these associations.
And as long as we can make them available conveniently it's not a problem.
White noise is a perfect sleep cute because you can played as long as you want and when you -- -- win -- you gradually decrease it little by little.
Sleeping with your baby all night long is it terrible sleep Q&A certain sense because you -- might wean them from -- it's all -- nothing.
So once -- over six months of -- it's safe to sleep with your baby and it's wonderful to sleep with your baby if you want to do that that's fantastic.
But it is not asleep Q that's easy to winning white noise on the on the other side is very easy to -- from.
All right so for all of those parents saw half pressed sleep deprived parents the book is the -- to baby guide to great sleep there is on the screen.
You can find it in the iTunes bookstore all right Amazon.com.
-- Any bricks and mortar bookstores that you -- still at that -- hobby -- great advice and it's a great but thank you so much for being here today.
