New immigration laws in terms of allowing people under the age of sixteen.
I -- age of thirty -- should say who entered this country by the time they were sixteen.
To stay here legally and to obtain work permits this is getting a ton of attention today.
And it is also leading the president President Obama will come out and speak on this were just being told.
At 1:15 eastern time today.
And -- Pollock -- I was gonna take questions on it on the phone coming up a little while so we're gonna get you what she has to say on that.
Moments away as well.
In the meantime Florida congressman Alan west who serves on the Republican Study Committee.
And house armed services committee is joining us now on this as -- congressman welcome good to have you here.
Thanks for have remarked that now the details of this are just coming out as I said we're gonna hear from the Homeland Security in a little while but what's your initial reaction to what -- heard so far.
Well this just came across my -- for about twenty minutes ago is -- house coming down to the studio.
And reminds me -- very important maxim that says surprises are only for -- So the fact that we are getting this were not in session I think this once again an example of executive branch or administrative overreached.
To have an unelected bureaucratic Janet Neapolitan -- coming out about a policy decision.
Which will affect residency here in the -- -- America.
That's why we have oversight committees and this should have been brought up -- legislation within the homeland security committee both in the house and senate.
It should have been debated bears should have gone through a process whereby it was.
Refined and amended and they have brought up before the the house floor and also to the senate floor for final approval that's how we do business.
In the United States of America we have representative government.
And I think right now this shows we're getting away from government.
This -- upon the consent of the American people would start to live Monday they ruled by edict or executive order.
-- -- bring -- some great points and no doubt the homeland security -- committee.
Will want to speak out about this is well I'll see what the overall congressional reaction is.
But it but let's go to to the issue itself for a moment because there are Republicans have been somewhat divided on this issue as to whether or not.
-- children who are brought an illegally by their parents and these children you know have no say in the matter should -- Grant them the right to work in the country legally.
Under work -- mats and then potentially allow them to go through the process just like everybody else does who enters the country.
And -- and to the country of of pursuing citizenship.
Well I think there's -- in the details and that's why we should allow this to go through the legislative process.
There -- committees because I can start to ask questions about.
What's going to happen as far as their right to vote I mean is this.
One of those back -- opportunities allow people which for in the next five months to get the opportunity to vote.
Will receive -- and Apollo -- on the president come out.
With the new edict -- that -- we allow these people to be illegally we're -- going allow them to have the opportunity to vote so how far down the rabbit -- that this does this go.
And that's the greatest concern is that.
We have something that we really don't know how all the details -- flesh out.
We just have this basic.
Executive order of this basic rule there's been brought up from the administration.
But the American people obviously are not allowed to have any type of it -- Through their represented is that they sent to Washington DC.
That's a great pointers and whether or not these people who gain work permits how quickly that would happen whether or not they have the ability to vote even if they don't though.
I would imagine that they have family members who could be influenced.
Because of this decision.
And that's a big issue you know we talk about Colorado talk -- New Mexico.
The Latino vote in this country everybody's trying to influence that vote.
And that is certainly going to be the backdrop of this decision.
Well.
I can guarantee you that as we get toward the election there's no doubt that people concerned about the Hispanic vote.
And would be very insisted to know how close of groups like -- lock in low Raza.
To this decision that has been made and what type of influence and impact they had on this this executive order or how it was -- be handed out being made today.
And why is it being done at this point in time why we have we not allowed -- national debate on this issue to really good assessment about what American people feel.
You want -- would have been a big debate over this is in Florida.
And I asked Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio have both been outspoken.
On the fact that they think that Republicans need to be a bit more open.
Two ideas like yes what do you say -- Sure.
We could be more open to ideas but I think that we have a legislative process where those ideas to brought before the committee.
You have members of congress again -- not provide amendments as we have an open rule that's call regular order.
So we have that process in place but also find it quite ironic.
That the state of Florida has been asking the Homeland Security Department under Janet Napolitano.
For the past year to help us and improving the integrity and cleaning up our voter rolls down here Florida and they -- refused to do so and now we see the Department of Justice bringing a a lawsuit.
And asking governor Rick Scott the stand down.
So once again -- see this -- something more so motivated by political expediency.
Really -- tried to do something that through the legislative process we can find a good solution to.
Well as the agency if something does come forward.
In the congress you know how you would how you would vote on that what your thoughts where on that as it comes through a process but I obviously the process is the most important thing to at this point.
-- in west it is thank you very much thanks house.
