Can't really.
-- released.
Your leisure product.
Look like they have there -- massive data especially because fiscal calamity like they have there.
That was Republican presidential nominee de facto Republican presidential nominee.
Mitt Romney campaigning over the weekend in Brunswick Ohio.
Talking down -- -- eurozone.
And saying President Obama is interest in and taking the country.
Down that path this Internet is power play and -- and Chris Farrell a very happy Monday -- -- good.
To have you here very good by the way to have friends Steve -- -- of this Internet telecast these days -- back with us he's a serious interview go to the Internet is a senior writer for the weekly standard he rocks Twitter hardcore.
Pretty -- so well.
Right now the deal right now Steve is that as much as Mitt Romney wants to associate.
President Obama with Europe which is and essentially.
Eight.
Middle of probably a decade long recession and they have these enormous fiscal problems and in on Sunday in Greece people were thrilled to have.
See the maintenance Avaya evade not happy status quo so Mitt Romney wants to do that but unfortunately for the president he has.
Little choice but to delve deeply into your -- a European affairs right now.
Because he wants them to not have a financial crisis right.
He needs to push everything beyond November he's in those -- Mexico right now.
At a meeting of the G-20 trying to work these things out -- going to be subsequent meetings later in the week it's unclear exactly what.
The president is going to do other than stand aside and applaud that there hasn't been that the crisis doesn't.
The regulations were not wrecking the happy this week that's where I did you say when I made it home and I was a teenager can't pay you you made it -- he did not -- our congratulations -- do you know who else.
Is it in -- -- is Mexico.
Wendell Goler.
There a White House correspondent extraordinary master of foreign affairs.
When -- how we doing today.
Well Chris in here in Los -- -- breathing a sigh of relief over the Greek collection which means they don't have to go back to square one on the eurozone crisis.
That will dominate the summit here but it won't be -- -- just three eurozone leaders and heads of the European Union are.
Are here and most couples the seventeen nation group does have a summit in Brussels at the end of the month that's when the leaders hope to come up with a plan to deal with the crisis.
But the president and the other leaders here in Los couples wanna see over the next couple of days is a commitment to deal with the crisis to strengthen the banks across Europe with common standards -- banks work better together and coordinated budget policies among the country's salute.
Germans don't feel like they're paying -- welfare checks it's a jobs issue for mr.
Obama and by that I mean jobs in the United States.
Us and Europe with our largest trading partner and a key part of the global financial system.
And their parents very important the United States and the rest of the world but they -- through their issues.
Now the G-8 summit at Camp David last month -- think the president tipped the scales in favor of growth instead of just debt reduction which is to say.
Sided more with France over Germany in the eurozone battle in here -- -- funny.
The pressure will be on developing nations like Brazil India and China that could contribute more to global growth.
Meanwhile on the sidelines of the summit -- one on one meetings including one with Russian president Vladimir -- and later today.
That's the first meeting between the president President Obama and potent since -- returned to the top spot at the Kremlin.
Mr.
Obama will press him on Syria.
-- Russia blocking the UN resolution that calls for the ouster of Bashir Al Assad and -- continuing to ship weapons -- -- the -- also talk about Iran in the effort to make sure.
Its nuclear program isn't aimed at producing weapons.
Round of negotiations with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany and Iran began in Moscow earlier today -- Thanks want to have a great time down there in Mexico keep up the good work.
Okay Steve case now speaking of Vladimir Putin.
When the president has his meeting with him today Vladimir Putin is it's got to be like -- this current circumstance.
It was just back in March that did president.
Had his now infamous hot Mike moment -- with with who we call -- -- power play the pocket who can.
Dmitry Medvedev.
About more flexibility after the election.
That -- cause a series of domestic political events including allowing Mitt Romney to exert maximum pressure.
On the administration for what he says was a lax policy as it related to our number one geopolitical flow as Romney calls them and then couldn't seem to live up to -- billing.
Syria they're moving -- and Marines they say into a base in Syria.
Supporting our.
Advances on Iran's nuclear program all kinds of difficult stuff.
If couldn't that is if he wears a shirt.
Throughout the meeting and does not bring his tiny draft within that that that stands there with -- -- We're cleaning hunting knife what will be the news that comes out of -- Obama.
I mean I expect there will hear you know that what's what's that the language that the White House both webcasts of both parties to use -- this it will be a frank and honest I got on -- -- yes yes frank and honest exchange.
Look community it the president has to guard his flank here at home on domestic politics he's he has campaigned.
On the Russian resent having war this was part of this one of the things that he held up that's the reason to reelect him as he was giving speeches.
Across the country over the past six months.
It looks more and more like that's a policy that has not -- diminish if not for.
And these moments like this with respect to Syria and Iran.
Why -- the Russian reset in the first place and most people acknowledge that we did we the United States gave up quite a bit.
Even -- in pursuing this reset more than it was lopsided affair more than.
The Russians gave up in -- I would -- the Russians didn't give up much at all.
If not for these moments then why do something.
Well and we so we can safely say that we reset it just maybe that we've -- -- that 1977.
It.
Good pay for it may have been a deeper -- that than previously anticipated.
So for -- What he wants is more than anything else to look like a big deal because he has his own political problems at home and he.
The Russians and we talk about this here a lot is that.
Their culture says that they want to be a great power at a player in the world that Moscow should be.
A co equal.
Super power to Washington.
So as far as who is concerned.
If Obama has to be more bellicose with him for Obama's own political -- -- political problems that should -- -- Forbid it should be I don't expect that Obama will be more bellicose and we might read something about the president having you know -- stern.
With respect to these discussions on Syria I don't expect that he will actually do that right it's not it -- seen it's not the way that President Obama operates he -- Is it as -- -- hasn't really ever done that that kind of manner before and in fact campaign in 20072008.
As a candidate who would not.
Do that but yet there's no question that I think it benefits Vladimir Putin to be seen as standing up to the the great Satan the United States and if you're conspiracy minded about these things you can make an argument that he -- in fact trying to build.
A coalition another coalition opposite the United States that would include Syria Iran -- -- and others and then there's the economic coalition this is the G-20 after all it's getting together and there's these -- the -- this is the.
I help me.
Brazil.
Russia.
India China and there's that that -- -- I can't remember what the answer is but.
I can't remember what this is the weather Singapore made it.
South Africa Africa -- -- says the magic voice in my here.
So you have these you say you have these countries and they have an interest in not seeing the traditional economic powers of the United States and Europe.
Come together and and get out of this problem.
But let's get to the take away.
Does any of this European overall does any of this stuff have a real effect on the election do voters actually care.
It could not.
-- here's the problem for I think for President Obama.
There's virtually no scenario in which president of this this is all everything's happening in Europe.
Works to his advantage at the very best he can hope for the status quo he hoped that there's not -- -- short term collapse and I think the results in Greece.
On Sunday make them more likely and certainly if -- -- party the far left party would have won it would have hastened the likely collapse right or the Nazis that were running in good enough -- -- didn't have they didn't have quite the power of the far out exactly but but.
You know that -- I think this pushes that back.
I still think it's inevitable that group that that Greece going to be out of the hero I think this just makes that it -- -- longer term proposition.
In for the president makes it less likely that this would happen before November.
Europe where even the good news is bad Steve basically for a second because when we come back will be joined by -- -- any -- Internet you're a big fan of hers.
And we're gonna talk about today's power play column where I -- that it's no coincidence that Mitt -- headed to the Rust -- have been through the Rust Belt on his first bus tour of the general election because that's where he'll win or lose this election we'll talk about that when we come back so stick around.
And that is Mitt Romney campaigning this morning in Janesville Wisconsin with congressman Paul Ryan.
And still governor Scott Walker -- this is power play welcome back.
And Mitt Romney is on something that is a lot like a bus tour actually the buses on a tour -- -- flying to meet the bus in various locations and then writing that's what politicians you now.
It's harder to do with the whistle stop because the train is very difficult to move -- he is out there on this tour that started in New Hampshire and traveled out across.
What some -- the Rust Belt but is basically the part of the country along interstate seventy into the north this is the old industrial heartland of the United States.
And it also happens to be.
One of the most politically changeable parts of the nation.
In the recent decade you've had to wave elections for Democrats where they picked up big bunch of Republican seats and the Republicans came storming back in 2010 and experienced -- about a third or more of their gains across the whole country.
In these days so how's it gonna play and -- -- so gosh darn important to Mitt Romney you know who can tell us that.
Annie -- can tell us that -- can tell us that because she is a former senior advisor to senate majority leader Harry Reid she is a principal advanced strategies but also she used to work for Ed Rendell and she spent a little time out there in the -- and -- -- or.
Thanks -- -- can tell us that because he is he's also Smart.
All right so here's the question I wrote today that -- you do the math and you put the electoral map on the table about what's out there.
These states this part of the country you're talking about.
In terms of states that are theoretically -- more than a hundred electoral votes these are all states that Barack Obama won.
In 2008.
And they're all states that to one degree or another are in play this time around.
And really this is all the marbles right and it lets start with you.
We just say for the record that we didn't governor Rendell announced buster and all 67 -- we had she stayed on the bus from all -- he's not.
Everybody agreed to do now is love reading not get that luxury we had the luxury of staying with -- blanket and Arabic tells us that.
Acrylic -- a beltway it's.
Good good that's good all American acrylic.
Oh good in the Pentagon.
Is going to be challenged vote for him -- mean a lot of.
It is because.
You know Pennsylvania in in particular is a very unique state I mean it's one that has traditionally now been going more more -- especially.
-- presidential the overwhelming vote which had always been the case in the Philadelphia area in the greater suburbs which -- tend to be Republican but more.
-- -- Republicans -- -- say.
That's -- where liberal yes yeah.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- It is to be hard for the west kept it in the west is going to be haven't typically because that Romney they don't seem necessary -- a gun and easy that they don't necessarily see him moments feared him yeah that's true.
And not challenging and not understanding really where they are economically in this is that true also for Michigan and Ohio and other places you when you have.
Fans out there that say let Detroit go bankrupt.
There are people in -- errors this entry at.
Companies especially in Ohio and others that -- part of it air.
Car manufacturers -- chains in Toledo especially -- places that actually do in fact what happens in Detroit so it's not gonna be a slam dunk for him he's going to be a very very difficult time for him.
Both from the social science and also -- -- There will be no slam dunks for anybody in any of these states doubt Steve for Romney.
I think the way it's -- -- what's actually meaningless but one way in which it is interest and four and native Wisconsin I'd like yourself.
Romney has something that other Republicans in May be generation haven't had which is a way to get.
The bright red counties out in the in the -- but beyond the suburbs out in the rural and small -- -- of these states fired -- because they really don't like Barack Obama they really don't like him extra so he gets that that conservatives -- -- real conservative might -- but also to these progressive off liberal -- I -- that -- -- -- -- not the you know he's not Rick Santorum he's he's -- he he is -- as a very moderate -- Right right -- -- and look that's where the battle's going to be and I think he'll do well in rural areas Barack Obama will do better in in the cities and in the fight will be over the suburbs in the excerpts and I think that's.
Are traditionally what we've seen I think.
The -- one thing that we need to remember going back to 2008 is that Barack Obama had a very difficult time connecting with these voters with these -- urban voters.
In the primaries.
In the states in places like Ohio like Michigan Wisconsin and Iowa where he and he did better in Iowa but.
Those were Hillary Clinton voters by and large and if he's you know this you're gonna have this battle between two candidates think we might have some challenges and connecting with these voters and -- -- About places like.
Mandy Clark County would tell.
Nicely done wow with the correct -- -- there's this little -- -- and middle -- -- and worked -- for you.
And places like Lake County Ohio.
And other spots where.
It's.
Medium sized communities out there where you have folks that actually win for Obama in 2008 places with strong Republican leanings.
Now heading for the president.
For his part his strategy is pretty clear.
Mitt Romney is a vampire.
Who want you to lose your job to somebody else.
I -- -- -- who now Andrea we will -- any prediction here is that you hear the word outsourced.
And about one -- -- times between now and Election Day is there a problem though is Steve points out.
That in these suburban areas the harder than Obama swings on these issues.
In these college campus in places like suburban Milwaukee.
Suburban Columbus it's an actual turn off for those votes.
It could be and that's what time is so important and after really -- right now I don't necessarily know that his first.
Get out actually struck the right -- -- -- -- -- -- -- people that you know question but I just think you're right there's truly is there's always that threat.
But the basis of the argument was correct and that is in these areas still you have very much old -- -- the union -- union is not a negative -- -- -- bachelor honestly I don't.
Is it and use -- make the argument that look he.
He was you know union busting -- shipping these jobs overseas this is to record he was that he had a -- economic record when he was in masters.
Those type of things are gonna resonate and it really comes down to a numbers game as well.
You know where are all of these people have they left the state in our other urban areas gonna be so much more -- population base for them.
That he actually can win this -- -- as -- can win the states based on sheer population where they left.
Now I wrote in the -- -- it -- you may have merely for that this can't cost of a Twitter follow.
At least I wanna put out there every day and I'm so fond of you.
But Steve one of the things that I wrote today -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Arizona you've already seen because of the surprising.
Closeness.
Early on in this race that were already down to sort of a parallel program.
If you draw a line from Richmond.
To get more rain to Milwaukee to Manchester, New Hampshire you've got mostly around us it's almost -- its run this issue let's just go with -- for an open.
There was quadrennial and we know movies a little bit of -- exactly well -- -- -- sort of there's and then there's and then there is Florida and and that's always the case right now it looks like that Mitt Romney's got a pretty good shot down in Florida but -- safe but basically the election has already.
-- -- -- down to that part of the country right we have.
I think video of the it team Obama in Chicago has had to re calibrate.
We're they were going to be paying attention and if you look back at the presentation that Jim Messina campaign manager for President Obama made in late December 2011 what he laid out what he said -- six paths to victory at Westpac from the south pass -- midwest at center -- -- -- Texas yes.
All those things had in -- the assumption that President Obama would win Wisconsin.
And was -- and is now a toss this so accurate -- they're already re doing their math in a way that is not favorable to the president I think it goes to some of the things that that pace suggesting this is up.
A hard argument to make I would argue that it's difficult for him.
To run on the record that he has at this point so he's trying to plug plug.
-- we have to go but very quickly for both of you it's from -- -- -- and it's for Steve but I'm putting it on the floor we'll start with you Steve how do you see Ohio and Florida go quickly.
If I had to guess -- it both go for me best -- Lawmakers and local vet -- OK okay yeah.
Very much for being with -- guys -- really appreciate -- but not you're not going anywhere we're just -- you can you please stay -- because -- we come back we will find another Republican for -- for another conservative anyway for.
I need to do battle with it will be fun to stick around.
Listen this is a deep hole caused by the same policies Mitt Romney wants to go back to.
That was senior White House advisor David left on FOX News Sunday with Chris Wallace but that's why -- abandon it previously optimistic.
Public position on the trajectory of the economy and this is you Lorena is power play welcome back.
And welcome back to -- Heatley who is one of your face.
And please meet somebody who may become one of your new -- Michelle Celeste.
She's the communications director for -- She is formerly associated with the artist known as Newt Gingrich.
And what don't act does is basically try to -- the bench.
For the Republican Party they -- on the local and state level to recruit candidates up and comers and then trade -- right.
So that the GOP had some people to run for office.
Welcome to the dominant Internet telecast of the 1130 half -- show thank you -- okay so here's the deal.
How do you talk about the economy if you running for office.
Now if you're an incumbent as David -- was having a hard time with yesterday which was Chris Wallace and it was a great exchange Chris Wallace is like when you were here.
It's X and so days ago you said hey you know things are looking up now it's very good dark clouds are gathering and those things.
And certainly for Mitt Romney if you're the challenger it's a little easier because you say.
Things are absolutely terrible.
And they will only fall into a giant -- in the bottom of the sea floor Barack Obama gets reelected.
So let's start with you Michelle.
If -- as you would buy it as your organization advises candidates and -- you think about this over the course politics what's the right way what's the wrong way to talk about it now.
Sure and you know the difficult thing here for David -- -- the Obama campaign unfortunately.
Is that it's not Romney's failed policies of the past it's Obama's failed policies of the president.
You know and so it's hard for them to go out and talk about jobs in the economy we get new data last week it's talking about unemployment isn't gonna take down at all before the end of the -- -- -- good right immediately look and yeah.
I've and that's why he's talking about everything but jobs as a last week he comes -- on immigration.
You know on the supreme irony now that 800000 people.
Who would have been deported perhaps.
Now to stay here apply for visas is that there's no just be hat you know there's a 100000 people like that there's more I irony is more supreme.
-- -- -- Hey it's -- I got.
Do you stay -- immigration and -- got to talk about gay rights it's a war on women so he's trying to appeal to different parts of his base.
Talking about things they don't have to do have jobs because it's a lose lose situation.
Form Tony you've been on both sides of that you've that you've had you -- had to talk for people who are have a complicated economic record and you've also been able to in it's much easier to be on the other side the right when you're on the outside and can say.
I don't know what this guy's -- -- -- and then things in the great.
Yeah images turned and -- -- the president has is that the last night wasn't it wasn't as robust as they wanted to but is about the projector citizen and I.
Definitely not as robust as they want.
It is about telling the story and discredit -- -- -- where they are going in with what they're going to be doing in the future and that is that when they did.
It hear it in what was inherited wasn't -- in they have stopped in the house update it -- Sit this this with declining which we regret sincerely yours you're talking about trajectory about the -- -- actually -- than one month doesn't isolate in isolation doesn't dictate whatever it was his policies are over all.
But it's about talking about what is that going to -- his vision forward in the policies that they could you please have stabilized it.
And -- progressed.
That's a very complicated argument that is a that is a that is a 84 quarter.
They snooker game how much easier yeah.
Here is what Dennis eye disease that that that right what the exactly what Barack Obama was able to do in 2008 and the challenge of course Michelle for Mitt Romney.
Is that as he tries to do this and talk about this stuff there is a danger to get himself into the same kind of difficult that are on the hat which is that you over promised and under deliver and in a way Barack Obama's that was able to talk.
In all these ways and you get into office and he got a problem.
When you're talking when you're advising candidates when you're doing this stuff do you say -- pump the brakes and you don't want to go too far too hard because if you do you're gonna you're gonna leave yourself.
-- what sort of government.
And the thing is you know people -- We think he does -- yeah.
-- -- you visit the different.
We have a platform called a 66 goals and create jobs and opportunity that people hear about real solutions to create jobs they don't want you know ahead.
This is what I generally -- -- this is what I may do they want real answers you know and so.
When you have those late I didn't get real support people can follow what you're doing and then you know -- -- and do it.
And I think Romney has a real plan or he can 5959.
-- -- exactly studies out.
But they can be in over the present recollection that gives -- details out but people -- real answers they want solutions and they want details they don't want generalities of.
Okay the last word from both of you guys.
In terms and taking off your -- your partisan -- right now in terms of making the economic argument and talking about the economy the right -- -- -- let her break for both Romney and Obama think.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- They're not -- without with a great deal -- wrong.
C -- season.
I see I think -- may prove your future and see if you can overcome partisanship and well and I didn't Obama and that's only because.
Creating job.
Yeah the thing is he's blaming congress for his failures so what happens this year when the house is likely gonna remain Republican maybe this and it -- Republican to.
Now what many just as of his hands at -- and -- -- -- -- -- -- because he's not kind of jobs.
Yeah.
Sure it.
We're gonna -- we're gonna average it out and they're getting to see it turn.
Turns as a ladies we yeah we thank you should treat them much for being with us today it was good fun a great way to set up about your main course and and -- what's next on the hunt with Jonathan Hunt.
