Even more so for veterans Fox & Friends First -- But now it's your veggies I've talked about the second annual hiring of hiring our heroes jobs fair right here in downtown New York City what are you finding -- him.
That's that's right good morning guys were down here on Wall Street this morning -- -- veterans' jobs fair is being held today they're expecting.
About a thousand people to turn out you know we talk a lot about the unemployment rate in this country which stands at eight point 2%.
But the unemployment rate among veterans post 9/11 is actually a lot higher it's at twelve and a half percent.
So with that in mind there's a group called Irene -- heroes and they put together this jobs fair.
They're holding this one and hundreds of others all across the country small towns as well as big towns.
They put together this event to their employers from the healthcare industry financial services.
Energy you name it a lot of them are here this morning so let's talk to one of the founders of that group lieutenant colonel Kevin's -- he joins us now this morning good morning come on in -- -- tell us a little bit about this employment rate among those not eleven veterans why isn't so much higher than the general public.
Well I think there's a couple reasons first of all we're in a bad economy.
Second of all a lot of post nine elevenths veterans are younger veterans those -- 2.4 and under their suffering from 29.
Point 1% unemployment so that's significantly brings the average.
What kind of advice to you giving them when they go to employers try to get it up.
Well I think they need to do a better job of branding themselves.
They need to talk about the unique experiences they had in the military about their advanced technical skills and translate that to how that would be good for an employer.
In the workforce but if someone worked in a motor pool for example how do you make that relevant to the private sector well you don't use military jargon to talk about the truck you work -- You put it in -- speak and talk about it in terms of general employment.
These are very hard working people.
They are extremely reliable and they're great team players they can do anything what to employers tell you that they like about hiring veteran.
Well very -- a big talk about the advanced technical skills that I mentioned the intangibles -- leadership experience and and team playing there they're incredibly.
Talented people that work well in teams and that makes a business better.
These jobs -- being held all across the country people don't have to just show up here they can do it online absolutely so a lot of the employers actually use applicant tracking system so.
All -- systems are are very prevalent in our and our hiring fairs.
Right the group is called -- -- are heroes.
Check them on online lieutenant colonel -- -- thank you so much heated twenty years as US marine thank you for your service guys back to you in the studio will be here this morning.
