Welcome back everybody well governor Mitt Romney is huddling down in Utah at.
Private donor retreats this weekend but the -- is creating some political buzz because some of the names on his potential VP list.
Are you tall -- that.
So who should he pick my next guest says the list.
He's Larry's out Hanna director of the university of Virginia's center for politics Larry always great to see you thank you so much -- -- you doctor crystal ball.
Here today to give us a sense of what you predict will happen in the vice presidential sweepstakes but what I've found very surprising is that you say.
Ronnie -- have to pick a high profile.
Interest seeing kind of candidate to help him win this election.
No -- doesn't I have to pick a good person he has to pick somebody who passes the Oval Office test.
People have to look at this individual and say yes I can see him or her being president if called upon even on the first day.
If god forbid something should happen.
So -- it's a good job as long as a good person is -- I don't think the individual has to be especially high profile ideally.
The individual would help with some constituency that governor Romney needs to attract to the Republican side or.
Are perhaps a key state.
That could be one.
With the addition of perhaps two or 3% that the vice presidential candidate would bring on to the ticket on Election Day something like that that combination would be perfect.
Can tell you say that dead this year.
The presidential ticket could be a double dipped cone Vanilla not ranch -- -- -- just.
Playing -- -- with the names.
That are the top your list.
Absolutely look I tell people that now is the number one and ice cream flavor across America.
I don't I love develop myself.
And look when you're when you're running in an environment like this where the economy is is banned and in some respects getting worse.
This is an ideal environment for a challenger which governor Romney has a challenger to an incumbent.
You really don't want to do a whole lot to attract too much attention to yourself don't make yourself the issue.
Don't make your vice presidential candidate the issue.
Let the incumbent.
And his economy be the issue and that really is probably the best ticket to victory.
OK I didn't ask you know who -- is being is going to be the vice presidential nominee at this point.
Well we have two people at the top of our crystal ball list we've had -- got senator Rob Portman.
Of Ohio on the list now for I think three and a half months so what we think he's ideal especially because.
He's well qualified he's well respected across both files.
And he's from Ohio right in 27 of the last 29 presidential elections eighteen critical swing electoral votes.
But second we have governor former governor Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota.
I don't think he can win Minnesota but he fills many of the same niches that that Portman does without those eighteen electoral votes.
If fixing it up a lot of folks are betting on Marco Rubio from Florida because they believe he can help and Hispanic you don't see it that way.
Well here's why we we originally had rubio right up at the top in the top two.
The reason we have moved him downward is first he's only been in the senate a year and a half.
Second I'm starting to question whether he can really attract that much of the Hispanic vote.
And third I honestly think Romney can carry Florida in -- 29 key electoral votes on on its own.
Having said that a rubio choice would be very popular in the Republican Party not just with the Tea Party across the board in the GOP.
And if he's not picked I think it's obvious to everybody that eventually Marco Rubio is going to be on a Republican ticket either as president or vice president.
Well we -- -- You what lies ahead always interesting -- get -- your take from your crystal ball as we go forward in this presidential campaign thanks so much for joining us today.
I enjoyed it as always thank you either take care.
