And welcome -- FOX News Sunday panel plus with Brit Hume Kirsten Powers Nicole Wallace and jobs -- Well amazingly enough we didn't talk -- during the regular show about this week in the campaign so let's do it here and obviously the big news this week it seemed to me -- was.
The back and forth over immigration you had both.
Obama first Romney go down to Orlando to Disney World to talk about.
-- immigration policy how do you think that went and who who won who lost well the president.
It was certainly driving the agenda on this issue this week because of the of the enforcement policy -- -- It's been argued by some that it was discussed just real quickly that they're gonna halt deportation of people within the category of people love below a certain age.
Who.
Came here with their parents through supposedly no fault of their own.
And who have no criminal record and they'll be allowed to stay and it's gonna schoolers serving -- right and it will be.
And they will be permitted to work in this country which is I think -- the most desirable.
Part of it as far as they're concerned.
The attempt is of course obviously to appeal to Hispanics.
More an area of considerable weakness for Republican candidates for president.
I'm not sure that this is more than one -- story so and I think you -- he Romney campaign was intelligent not to be drawn into some full throated attack on it and so forth.
But -- would criticize the process -- -- and move on those things because it's.
I think it.
And any time.
Romney is drawn from discussing the big issues of the day the economy on to some other issue.
He doesn't do.
Now in Romney's speech he did a couple of points first volleys -- on the economy.
Hey look this president hasn't done that much for you unemployment among Hispanics is -- 11% much higher than it is for the general population.
And he also said in -- this guy had three and a half years he talked about comprehensive immigration reform he didn't do it.
Now he comes back and it in the eve of the campaign.
And announces this and it's just -- a stopgap measure.
Was -- persuasive.
I think the best argument he can make definitely.
And he's right and and they know and they know that that -- made Ali's promises -- comprehensive immigration reform and didn't do it this is an overtly political decision one I agree with substantively but it's clearly political.
But for -- bomb what works about Obama's advantage and against Romney it's really no fault of Romney's.
Is is the Republican primary and I think that that so alienated a lot of Hispanic voters the question is whether or not Romney can convince them.
That he doesn't hold these views towards.
Their community on -- not the only issue that they vote on but if they feel that that party is hostile to them and that's gonna work to Obama took and it's.
The -- one of the things that struck me about all of this is that for weeks maybe months.
Marco Rubio was talking about a modified -- -- which would have done exactly.
What the president was talking about.
Maybe even a little bit more floor for illegals that would have taken the kids.
It would have said if you stay out of trouble and you're going to school your serve in the military.
That we're gonna is allow you to -- Stay in this country.
Didn't do I mean kept talking about -- tried to get enough support.
Stalled.
And then Obama basically took his plan that is it is Obama wouldn't -- gotten half the credit for this thing it's rubio would come out -- his formal.
Well that's right -- I work for the last American president tried to use the power of the presidency to do something on immigration reform for it to -- let's -- -- the Oval Office address the nation tried to rally his own party.
And the Democrats to do something and that Obama's largely absent from that effort.
And I think that what you saw Marco Rubio concede this week was that this was such a viable lever this piece was something that he really needed.
To get something bigger done so there's another missed opportunity in what has been really an intractable.
Process in congress that then that the missed opportunities that without this piece he may have a harder time doing something bigger and lasting.
Jeff you know let's look at some numbers.
And tell me if I'm wrong on this but my recollection is that George W.
Bush got 41% of Hispanic vote in 2004.
And one not say that's the reason but it but that those two things -- happened.
John McCain got 31% and lost.
Does the Romney campaign have a number.
As to what they think they need to get -- -- obviously beat Obama among report Hispanics but they do need to get a certain.
Share of Hispanics and it obviously have to show improvement they know that they're not going to.
-- win the majority.
Hispanic voters and that's really not even possible this point but.
What they want to -- is also sort of split the difference and the number of Hispanic voters now is even a larger share of the electorate.
Overall than it was four years ago so if governor Romney slides backwards from where Senator McCain was four years ago that is real trouble for him.
I'm not sure that that's exactly going to happen this election again for the you know.
Umpteenth time is about the economy.
And it.
Hispanic voters are just as concerned about the economy so I think to governor Romney I mean we've seen him modulate his position -- really ever since governor Rick Perry was out of the race class -- and that's when he was taking those harder line positions to be a right to sort of worried about that but.
If there is a percentage in the running campaign headquarters in -- they.
And have been broadcast why it was so not sure what the numbers that they know they have to better than John McCain did for -- and only escape -- -- -- make questions before we go.
It is either because of this or other things is Marco Rubio stock.
Rising or falling as a possible running.
I don't think this changes -- -- all overall I think Marco Rubio senator rubio has the same advantages and disadvantages he had before the advantages are his this young.
Up and coming and sort of bright light for the party has disadvantages he does not meet 1 of the central criteria that governor -- talked about.
The ability to unquestionably serve as president right now at this moment.
For those reasons I think.
He has some challenges in this regard -- this issue itself I don't think matters and I've been reading some stuff this week it may have been in your paper that indicates that.
Did and a growth stock Tim holiday.
A lot of people think that simple NC is a good -- A pick here he's experience -- a candidate he's and he spent a lot of time out there on the trail Woolsey we'll see what type of a person governor Romney wants to pick and it's a governing pick I would think he would -- But toward a senator a -- in front.
From Ohio Rob Portman he's served in many aspects of the government it's an outside of Washington pick it looks like governor Pawlenty.
Who's really worked tirelessly for the Romney campaign for the last you know six months or so.
He.
Is -- -- but again only one person knows this are few people knows it's not us.
It's gotten around it may turn out -- not single Omnicare in that -- debate New Hampshire bass than you ever designed perhaps.
