We'll new concerns today as the United Nations is now considering at this moment a global arms treaty that work that would curtail certain gun sales.
Right now the UN is working on a plan that would put a whole new set of international gun rules in place.
Supporters including the Obama administration argue it will make the world more secure by -- down on weapons commonly used by gangs and terrorists.
But critics fear it would infringe on the Second Amendment right to bear arms right here in the United States.
Larry Pratt is the executive director of Gun Owners of America and KT McFarland is a Fox News national security analyst.
Larry let me start with you on this because the human rights groups.
Have convinced the Obama administration to.
Sort of reverse.
What had been US policy when it comes to this proposed treaty.
And to go into the United Nations and support it because they argue that human rights violations nationwide are -- it worldwide.
Are the result in parts of some very bad guys getting their hands on some guns and we need to have more regulation of international gun sales how does that affect the Second Amendment right here at home.
Well it would completely.
Work against what the Second Amendment it is intended to do.
But it doesn't seem that the constitution is much of -- an obstacle or a problem for this administration.
But nevertheless shall not be infringed is something that.
A treaty can't trump.
That that the very language in the constitution dealing with treaty making.
Says the treaties have to be made under the authority of the United States and if we the people having given authority.
For gun control to the United States to the federal government.
Then its hands are tied and in a practical level I think even Harry's senate would look at that treaty if it's presented to them and say.
This is toxic I'm not going to hurt an election year.
That's what I mean the gun lobby has a lot power KT a lot of power I mean just look at what was the NRA decided to score that holder contempt vote.
You have like two dozen Democrat Democrats almost immediately come over the other side of the -- a bit these lawmakers do pay attention to what the gun lobby wants.
It doesn't want this treaty.
But why I thought they'll understand exactly -- gonna affect Americans and the Second Amendment.
As opposed it is you know the the folks in for it we're proposing this.
One -- -- believe -- is only in an international thing it's gonna stop you know genocide and other countries because -- -- whether guns.
Not everybody wants the fact genocide and other countries that's not the point how capable -- the United Nations bends over -- stopping Iran's nuclear weapons program.
Our Ron has agreed to an international.
Agree and international treaty but we can't stop Iran Iran's cheating is building a nuclear weapons -- we have no ability to enforce -- can't even go and inspect what they're doing.
So the idea that the United States with -- it's national sovereignty to Actuate international organization.
It's going to somehow.
Verify and prevent every country in the world running -- to other countries it's just not gonna happen why because United States.
Will abide by at the same way we abide by the international arms control agreements.
On the development environment who's not going to agree to -- if countries like Iran is Iran get a really stop gun running to Hamas.
To Syria now and so you'll be left for the world it's not safe -- in fact it will have the absolute.
Opposite effect of what the intention -- it will make the world a much left they -- -- Larry what you think.
Really going on here -- since -- since we've had a reversal in terms of I guess from the Bush Administration to the Obama administration.
Why is this a political issue -- why -- why would the Obama administration be supporting this.
It reflects the the it.
Incredibly strong ideological commitment to control.
In general and guns in particular of this administration.
What they're seeking.
Is not going to be ratified by.
-- senate but what I suspect they will try to do because we've seen it in other areas of federal.
Raining a governing.
Is declare.
That whatever it might be registration.
Prohibition of certain caliber of firearms.
They'll just try to put that into effect administratively.
Even though they have no authority that hasn't stopped them anywhere else where they wanted to go.
-- -- -- -- That -- -- -- the treaty if it if it is accepted.
Would hold nations accountable through legally binding rules countries that sign it.
Are gonna have to pass laws to ensure that that that the weapons companies here in in the United States for example abide by this treaty.
So what I mean could you have American gun manufacturers being cited.
For noncompliance.
By the United -- I mean is there a conflict there between that but the potential treaty and the Second Amendment.
Well absolutely in our United States' laws remain supreme in the United States our laws are not secondary to internationalize.
The UN laws and then you would have a situation where the United Nations is looking at American domestic gun manufacturers.
And sanction him.
You know -- again go back and look at how successfully United Nations has -- in any time they've done this sort of thing.
Yeah I think I would say as well how in confident the United States -- -- controlling and weapons and you look at fast and furious we even keep track of those guns we somehow expect the United Nations is going to keep.
Track -- hundreds of thousands millions of firearms.
And as -- that there -- some unforced there's no importance anyway even if it were a good idea Larry tracking T McFarland thank you both.
