We thought we'd bring you a unique American story this fourth of July a growing up in the shadow of lady liberty.
Dan Perkins story is in this month's -- -- -- remiss magazine -- reminisce magazine he was one of several military families who live done.

And it's quite a walk and it used to me.
Pretty short and had steps going up the statue but that I guess that's progress or you progress -- Indeed because you're talking about walking.
You -- your brother didn't even weren't able even able to walk to school and in those days because he had to take both got -- to school is that correct.
That's correct we -- I don't know what they excursion.
Boat called -- hook mountain.
And we went to -- -- -- We went to school every day on a -- him one day.
It was kind of ball -- and they.
Ferry collided with us from the catwalk.

But it no problems were.

All the run for awhile and are fixed and then he we -- on a boat called a favorite well so lots of boat.
One truck on the island that was a one -- -- army truck.

Your neighbor way is the statue of liberty and on -- -- considering you grew up in such a patriotic way what is it that you would like didn't to tell.
A fellow Americans in terms of being patriotic.
Well.
I live in a small town and I was kind of put out in one the American legion -- men came by what the American flag.
A lot of people seeing them be oblivious and even though our city and -- -- on the front porch I didn't get up hold my hand over my heart.
Because.
I've got to that -- Reverence for Mike got great.
And the united states army and because my father was in thirty years from our Brothers in -- seven.
Well very good in a happy fourth -- you and your family and we're so glad to have you.
