Using FaceBook to fight crime it's now a growing trend of people turning to social media to help police -- crooks.

Not -- cut to -- on camera when they broke into his home last year and thanks to the images going viral on the suspects were arrested.

And just two weeks -- joins us now also here's shares thoughts former police detective and Fox News contributor Rod -- good morning to both of you.

Good morning -- morning all right Matt share your story you have ADT -- home security.

But you weren't using it at the time how -- Facebook's social media help you -- these crooks.

Also have a video surveillance system.

And when they broke him I got an email at work.

Showing a picture the the people coming up twisters and our house.

And at that point you know after we called Marlowe and the sheriffs came out I gave them copies of the pictures and also the video.

And -- that same point in time I started creating a FaceBook page.

And all the video all the pictures up there on FaceBook.

And I'm thinking in my seeing all of our high school and college kids.

You know my kids are in high school here and -- Bergen in college.

And they started setting -- all of their friends.

Somehow.

The sheriff's department decided to.

Notify the media to try to get more support in identifying the -- a broken -- house.

And once they send out the media was on the newscasts and the FaceBook web page went viral within two days -- probably had five or 600 friend requests.

And as soon as they all.

Our friend of the mall.

That evening that they afterwards.

The perpetrators were identified.

It's amazing the response you got on social media rod tell us how calm and is a story like -- and is there any downside is there any danger to doing something like map.

Well first of all I applaud Matt for what he did and yes -- this is becoming an increasing trend if you will Dave in terms of citizens getting involved.

Assisting police departments and mainly because many police departments as you well know due to the economy.

They've they don't have the resources to really go after these guys so what Dave did is a good thing but.

Let me caution you there is somewhat of a downside that you need to be cautious about.

But Dave kind of avoided that he worked closely with the police department so once you do get this video or once you do get information NASA who these individuals may be.

It's important that these citizens worked closely with the police department because we don't want these bad guys once they've identified.

Coming back to try to go after the end of the innocent citizens such as -- so it's very important that they work closely with their local police department.

So vote -- -- kind of took the process in your own hands and try to catch these guys how receptive was the police department.

And working with you in taking the things you had gathered.

And then continuing the search.

The police departments were all very receptive -- Helping foreign the perpetrators.

With all the tips from FaceBook in the video cameras they kind of viewed it as a win you know -- obviously and dunk.

I did have several detectives.

Lurking around on the FaceBook page.

And even some deputies from the side of -- I think Richmond Indiana.

We're saying that they they looked at FaceBook page -- posting their photos around them and their station to.

That's amazing right now -- my question is to the viewers out there this morning watching wondering how can I do what Matt did.

What are your simple tips in terms -- is -- a good idea to set up a couple of security cameras around the house as he did or what other tips do you have for people to stay protected.

Excellent question is a good idea to set up camera specifically after main entry doors and if you have any back wonder what your.

Your home it's important to set up cameras there -- the areas that we typically see regulars break into but in addition to that.

Have the ability to have audio in your home that can help as well salt wants you know you get this video -- like I said it's important before you put it up on FaceBook.

The go ahead and contacted police department and work with that one other thing real quickly -- they're the police department and New Jersey.

I have Bergen -- New Jersey and they've actually set up a web site.

Caught -- crux whereby they're using the video just like the same type -- -- that Matt hats and they're actually putting -- up on their own website which I think maybe.

Be a little bit better so again continue to work with the police department and that think this is that a trend that it's gonna definitely help -- them off sportsman.

Novel use for social media Rod Wheeler -- Shubert thank you both for being -- we appreciate it great tips for our viewers folks.
