Rate at a stand still hovering at eight point 2% in only 80000 jobs created last month -- -- still in this -- right.
We're talking about the economy with Wisconsin governor Scott Walker sitting here with us.
Is the economy headed in the right direction as the president suggested this week good to see you -- disoriented couldn't be how it is interesting eight clearly look like the president went away from that line he said earlier in the day after the jobs -- was released that were headed in the right direction but.
Didn't use that phrase again.
Where are we headed in terms of this economy and how will it impact the election.
Well remember this is the president just a few weeks ago who said the private sector is doing just following and then retracted that real quickly I think when people realized it's not.
We could be -- much quicker than there's many states like ours are doing a little bit better because we made changes in the state leadership the last couple years.
But we could be doing so much better and it's it's really largely depend on the -- that's interesting because you bring up the state issue and where President Obama is doing well right now is in some of the swing states 89 point lead right now over Mitt Romney in some of the polls but.
What's interesting is that may not be -- because of the Obama administration's policies it may be policies like you're wrong what good example was -- -- -- couple years before I was governor when Barack Obama was the president Democrat -- the governor of that that we lost more than a 100000 jobs -- unemployment rate.
Was over 9% we made some fundamental changes over the last year and a half and we've gained more than 40000 new jobs -- -- below 7% but it's not because the federal government.
Effect oftentimes on your employer sit in a good example manufacture aluminum.
In Manitowoc recently told me he loved what our state agencies were doing what tripped them up with the federal EPA blocking him from creating more jobs.
Speaking of manufacturing let's listen to what the president.
Has set about the state manufacturing in the country don't talk about -- Make factoring sort of come back here in Ohio and all across the country.
Some of the biggest manufacturing job growth since the 1990s.
A lot of folks.
Lost their job a lot of folks -- retrain another going back.
And and getting jobs and in renewable energy.
And industries of the future but for all the progress we've made.
We still got a long way to go manufacturing sorry to come back across the country house of -- We see manufacturing doing a little bit better but again it's one of those where you look at exports.
Now look at Europe in particular we could be doing much better than that midwestern states Wisconsin he was just talking about Ohio Pennsylvania and the big tent.
Other states throughout the midwest could be doing much much better but we need a good foreign trade policy we haven't had any that kind of leadership in the present as well those are things that would help us.
Was more manufacturer across the country.
There was one report this week that suggested manufacturing actually contracted for the first time since July 09 didn't get a whole lot of play.
But I ask you about -- overall narrative of what we're talking about.
Album and author earlier on this program said that the federal government does not create jobs he's highlighting the American spirit well then.
So does the federal government get blamed when the economy struggles and the governors get credit when states create jobs.
No it's it's one of those where in my belief is -- any -- state as welcome -- the level.
The government -- just people do that the difference those government can -- create a barrier for an opportunity to create those jobs.
We've done in states like Wisconsin Michael -- like Pennsylvania reelected -- Republican governors in the last two years.
Was create better opportunities the state level we're still that -- at the federal -- -- get one the highest corporate tax rates we still have an unbelievably -- Overall individual tax rate combined with regulations from the Department of Labor depart PP eight other federal agencies.
Really they're not about creating jobs but they are about creating barriers to job to that -- that's got to change.
Asked about Mitt Romney -- in your state because I think this is really fast here and we're hearing that Mitt Romney's not doing enough to get the message out.
Wall Street Journal pages this week sort of attacked him for just bashing the president but not really talking about true policies to get us through these next -- of these hurdles.
-- specifically any swing states.
He's suffering right now behind President Obama -- 89%.
Approval rating as I mentioned so what does Mitt Romney need to say to the people of Wisconsin.
To win this election.
He was with Horan and -- two weeks ago -- Janesville which is a typical blue collar city to city that few years ago lost the GM plant.
The -- by the president didn't do anything to help the people -- -- -- -- in the plant there.
The message he said there's one I hope he repeats over and over and over -- when he comes Wisconsin he talked about not just the problems the president as he talked about.
Repealing obamacare giving certainly back to small business and she talked about.
-- cost effective reliable sources of power he talked about streamline the regulatory process and what we do enforce is about common sense.
Not about government -- -- talked about lowering the tax burns some more money went back in the hands of Wisconsin in American consumers and entrepreneurs those -- the things I want to hear him say over and over again you heard a little bit just the other day in New Hampshire when he took a break from education.
But our case Wisconsin I think on the swing states.
We need repetition we need clarity and consistent as in that message and it can't be just about attacking the other side -- this plane attack.
It's got to be about saying here's the message I have.
-- -- corruption -- been there when -- recall election is going on a lot of heat on President Obama for not -- government run when you're watching that actually during the primary.
When he was in campaigning in and that Rick -- -- -- at that point he was consistently that -- he was one of the -- people that called me.
In our case -- right ahead of that he was not well but our case and we said this is really about us count -- now and so we didn't ask him to -- we he had been an early you'd made its case he said it very publicly said it was the most important race.
Probably in the country at that time so he was clearly there elect a president who was in Minnesota and Illinois.
Days before -- over that he literally threw -- -- waved as he went over so I like that.
Governor I don't know if you heard our last segment what were talking I think President Obama -- -- -- -- -- -- where he was trying to appeal to middle class.
Voters into his middle -- Scott -- said this is where the real values are.
You represent the values of an America.
What do you hear in that statement.
You know that's remarkable to me values are about America they're not about the middle class and on about being poor Richard anywhere between heck I -- -- much I was listening to earlier segment to about.
Talking about face my my dad was a minister.
We -- -- the time we were war because we just live the attitude that that the than Americans do which you work hard.
You can respect others you strive for success no matter what it might be in -- the priest on earlier was exactly right.
Success maybe in part monetary but it may be having a good life having good attitude -- a good community.
Those are shared American values and for the present to go on and try and distinguish between.
So called income levels I think is actually quite offensive to most Americans we have shared values as Americans those are things we cling to -- and I think those that -- should be striving for.
We heard obviously the effects and some of the fallout from the Obama -- ruling from the Supreme Court among some Republican governors this past week which is that they are not in the mode to.
Take part in this new expanded Medicaid commitment and Medicare program and they are gonna stay -- opt out of this.
I'll what do you think the broader implications will be for obamacare as it takes its teeth in into effect not even now -- a 20142013.
24000.
In -- state of Wisconsin.
-- right first off there's a lot of people do you get it right a lot of people assume the governors were concerned about obamacare somehow.
Violating the law the law doesn't go in effect until January 2014 -- a year and a half from now.
But between now and then I think many of us and I think even after the election many Democrats who are quiet.
-- be some Democrat governors who -- the same concerns.
We're very concerned about the long term impact of a pushing off higher cost of Medicaid onto the states which I believe this will ultimately do I believe they're looking for a fall guy in this.
It'll be state governments the other thing that's amazing go back to the questions you had about jobs.
I mean the Supreme Court said clearly.
This is tax increase this is what many of us have said for years this is a massive tax increase -- the American people.
And I think most people listening right now most of across America think the last thing we need right now is a massive tax increase.
I think that would have a devastating impact on.
On the economy in this country and -- -- we don't need when you implement the changes required of obamacare ahead of the election no we're waiting we said I've said for for a year and a half I said first up -- legal.
Second step this political my hope is we get a new president and US senate.
And we hold the house majorities with people who were committed.
To repealing obamacare if you don't like obamacare you gotta get rid of President Obama -- possessive.
Now that you.
One in need recall fights -- Powell is how is its governing now is it hard to bring everybody back together.
After all the striking -- -- in our case he had to -- -- -- -- legislatures not in session to next January so lot of what we're going to be doing throughout the summer is working -- issues have the time to spend month after month.
Really working on things -- -- put more people will work that'll bring people together.
It in the end whether it's in our state capitals it's in -- nation's capital we talk about economic issues those are things that should be able to bring people together.
Politically there's an instinctive -- grow apart but I think people can come together that's what we're committed to do.
Governor Scott Walker from Wisconsin is going to be here speaking in Manhattan -- -- -- in my fair city of Philadelphia we hope they treat you well into the good -- state governor enough -- -- -- its ultimate -- -- -- -- counseling my -- -- in -- I gotta I gotta you know you tag -- sports.
I got a -- there's a guy over here with a giant insurer and a half past rheumatology pastors out -- the year before.
The Packers got to the playoffs to win the Super Bowl because the -- -- -- maybe it's fair play and record turn out for change I -- I think there's seven a couple of pieces she got up and actually foot -- -- but really you think it's like how to get out of the number one player by the players in the NFL so congratulations to your -- and well worth it he's a good -- -- and --
