Let's get some thoughts now about taxes from senior political analyst Brit -- back in our Washington bureau good -- -- I have breath.
It is a shame in a way that this election campaign is not being conducted in the courtroom.
If it were lawyers for Mitt Romney could simply stipulate to the court that yes indeed there -- is a rich guy.
That would bar the president's team from further staging events designed to underscore the point.
That was surely the real purpose of the Obama tax event at the White House today for one thing mr.
Obama was not proposing to cut anyone's taxes.
He -- -- proposing to keep current tax rates in place for one segment of the population for one year while letting them go up for another segment permanently.
In so doing he was announcing a position is held for years and proposing a bill that has no chance of passing.
Indeed leading members of his own party Nancy Pelosi for one do not agree with him on the issue what's more.
The amount of money raised by mr.
Obama's proposed tax increase would make only the timing is dead in the budget deficit.
So why you ask is he proposing it.
The answer it seems is to get Mitt Romney to come out against it so the team Obama can say look at his rich guy looking out for himself and his rich friends.
Well people who think rich people are the problem in America -- nod their heads but those people were never going to vote for Mitt Romney in the first place.
In other words mr.
Obama may find it all the -- in that barrel and have long since been shot Brett.
Over the Obama campaign is clearly trying to paint Mitt Romney has a rich guy but what about their efforts to try to paint him as a corporate raider.
And his business experience yeah that's good but sort of goes beyond him being -- a little bit more about how he made his money and -- there's some evidence in the polling in some of these swing states for the Obama campaign has been.
Advertising so heavily against Romney on Bain Capital with the idea -- -- corporate raider.
That it may be telling a little bit and it may be hurting Romney and the question is whether it's making an indelible impression -- the Romney camp.
Hopes and that's not because it's holding back into the extent.
-- Bret thank you can bet.
