Right now house Republicans are gearing up for another vote to repeal the new health care -- Two days of floor debate are underway with a vote expected tomorrow but don't expect the outcome to be any different from previous attempts and there have been many of them.
The vote will be mostly symbolic since the bill has zero chance of passing in the senate so why go to -- the trouble again.
Let's talk about it with senator Alfonse D'Amato -- former Republican senator from New York.
Lanny Davis was White House counsel in the Clinton administration both are Fox News contributors.
Senator D'Amato to you first why try.
Well I think it's important to point out.
At some of the deficiencies in his bill I wouldn't attempt to repeal the whole thing but I I'd point out the -- -- -- -- -- taxis that are hidden.
I'll I'll bet -- Is it a wearable all of them all but in 90% of the legislative chart -- aware -- point them out to the people for example.
You're going to increase capital gains taxes by almost 25%.
No one knows that.
You're taxing medical devices.
You are putting -- tax hunting things it will win some they should almost.
It taxing -- on so I would go after and identify those areas.
And by the way I think it's mistake to try to repeal the entire thing because -- some good provisions in this bill for example.
Allowing families to keep youngsters who graduate from school.
On their insurance plan up to -- six or.
Conditions where people are allowed to get insurance so I think tax -- -- Tactically while I understand defer density they -- -- That actual failure of this bill.
-- -- the -- thing out on when you know you're not going to do because incentive stock -- -- -- and as you said well yeah the -- not gonna passive but Lanny might they're not be some Democrats may be conservative Democrats in the house who would vote to repeal because they're afraid of seeing a repeat of what happened in 2010.
There might be I think it's better -- say hello to Al D'Amato who I hope I don't ruin his reputation.
I think about it the more thoughtful Republicans.
Not in oxy moron.
By the way so nice to here individually -- -- lineup.
And look I do agree with senator that there are parts of this legislation.
That certainly the American people don't appreciate any mention the two most important.
Republicans -- say they wanted to appeal repeal.
This Affordable Care Act the name of the act by the way.
Would have to tell the American people if you lost your job and you've previously had cancer.
You'll never be able to get insurance again and I support that.
By repealing this bill that would be the truth.
But what Republican today will tell the American people if you have a child 25 years old who's currently insured because of the passage.
The Affordable Care Act as -- -- -- said you're not going to have that insurance anymore.
And I agree with that if they were that -- senator D'Amato at least I would say this ridiculous exercise where they know this won't be passed.
The reason why they have a 9% approval rating which is left to staff and family members who -- giving him approval is this kind of nonsense.
It's -- -- Lanny yeah obviously yeah there are things about this bill that the American people like you know letting.
Your children stay on your health care policy until they're 26 for instance.
People like that but but what's wrong with the idea of throwing out the whole thing and then maybe bringing back the parts that people like.
As individual pieces because you know you heard Nancy Pelosi say we have to pass this thing before we can find out what's in it.
Well I'll let senator D'Amato gets an equal time here I I think speaker Pelosi misspoke.
And I think our legislative process for -- thousand page bills.
Most members don't read all the fine print shouldn't read all the fine print but in this case it wasn't overly complicated and I think a very bad process.
That resulted in the passage of this bill but besides process I favor the policy as some of the things that senator D'Amato -- One of the criticisms senator D'Amato is that Republicans aren't really offering any big replacement they say yes we will fix health care but they haven't come up with a lot of specifics so so -- vote to get rid of the affordable care -- of that slash I would yeah it takes notes motion agreed GH parts of the -- and go after them.
And if if for example the mandates which many people feel.
Off are absolutely wrong and wrong headed and by the U really think -- -- to collect money.
From out working families who say I'm not gonna take -- a a policy how you gonna do it.
You don't have enough tax meant a lot here and do it and it is -- tax.
That's what they should do.
Issued to zero win on the taxing medical devices yet does that make sense so go to the American people that we're gonna make this bill.
-- it is.
Because to leave it as it is is an injustice that's the argument I think they should take there's something that got talked about early in the early in the going but doesn't get talked about a lot these days it seems like that half a trillion dollars is that supposed come out of Medicare to pay for.
The Affordable Care Act where does that stand I can't -- can't take your life Steve's in no way they're going to do what you can't reduce the doctor's fees.
Any more than you have.
-- -- -- Go Atlantic.
Let's accident there are considered.
I was just it's going to say that Republicans really can't have it both ways though we know they try.
We have a fifteen trillion dollar debt.
And all Republicans say -- -- cut the entitlement programs -- part of those entitlements -- Medicare.
And Social Security.
And we Democrats have to be willing to support senator Simpson a great conservative Republican senator -- -- senator -- served with.
And Erskine Bowles -- chief of staff in the Clinton White House came up with a proposal to do something about that national debt.
That involves tightening up on Medicare spending and Social Security.
And spending and cutting out the tax loopholes and Democrats -- Republicans.
Like senator D'Amato myself we're both on opposite sides philosophically on many questions we've got to come together do something about that national debt and I hope President Obama.
Will make the Simpson -- step it was his commission.
Going forward and I think you'll really defeat.
Romney if he does that.
It does seem like there's a lot of wheels spinning going on on Capitol Hill right now gentlemen thank you senator Alfonse D'Amato Lanny Davis thank you.
I'm very excited to see a senator conceal and.
That's the nicest panel that we've had both parents -- civility in Washington it can't happen and can't happen up this -- pointed out.
