The Pentagon -- sounding new alarms about Iran in a report to congress the Defense Department warns Iran is improving the destructive power of its long and short range missiles.
And not get access the report comes as Iran is playing a key role in UN talks talks about an arms trade treaty.
The -- would regulate weapons ownership by both governments and possibly civilians to.
Former -- investor John Bolton joins big insects good evening glad I'm here I can't tell you what's history.
Well there's a long history of this treaty and while it sounds on its face like it's just dealing with.
So weapons sales between governments there's a hidden agenda here in the hidden agendas by the gun control crowd in the United States.
I'm happy with its inability to get the kind of gun control laws it -- that the federal level basically going outside and trying to negotiate them into -- treaty.
Which will come back to the senate which they hope people won't pay attention to and then -- -- bind the United States.
I was chancellor of the -- beans have voted their ratified by the US senate probably.
-- -- Who will all right well fortunately at this point.
Opponents of gun control legislation have gotten about 58 senators to sign on to say they're not gonna agree to this.
But the agenda here has been trained for a long time this is just another effort.
Here when you look at how what are these weapons are talking about under this treaty.
But then -- like like -- shot -- go hunting with our means and would that be included.
Well the treaty still being drafted but that's the idea I mean we've we've been -- it's not like pre existing.
Arms trade is -- a fair the United States has an arms export control act all sales of US weapons have to be license we we look at the sale of military weapons.
And and try and restrict the end uses we -- what and uses they're being put to we have a whole system that's already in place this is a bad out.
Hunting rifles pistols.
And things that gun control advocates in this country have long sought to control in violation of the Second Amendment.
I -- -- one as I imagine even if this treaty were signed in effect is such enormous black market and in guns.
There around the world that figures that we will -- -- -- anyway -- a black market the the United States in here's to its treaties that makes it different from most other countries in the world that happily signed these things and then don't enforce them.
I'd be in the second thing is that is a lesson the treaty passed let's do it -- it did regulate the sale of -- -- -- civilian weapons to -- What it includes suicide tested components to make a suicide vest.
No that doesn't seem to be -- definition of how that slipped.
Opening that seek parity but I mean that's what I would I would expect -- -- this is little bits we're trying to regulate guns -- if you wanna do it seems almost silly and if you're trying to prevent people from acting in a most terrorists to gruesome way to kill.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Look the United Nations for years has never been able to define terrorism and that that has inhibited its ability to -- terrorist activities around the world.
But there there is an important point here and that is many governments in the UN don't like the private ownership of firearms you know to talent -- regimes around the world.
-- -- don't want their citizens to have firearms so they're perfectly content to sign up to regime.
That limits weapons sales to government to government and that's the way by implication.
You try and buying the United States to limit civilian ownership and use in this country.
Would be enormous amount of guns -- -- how could this.
Possibly even a -- -- signed and delivered everybody was happy with them and want to be part of it mean how can possibly be effective they're -- so many guns out there and -- section huge black market there's so many ways around listed I don't I don't understand.
How anyone thinks it's spent in a time negotiating this is -- isn't.
Good use of time -- you believe in.
We know where it originally started from -- former British foreign minister Robin Cook who wanted -- a moral British foreign policy I guess that's as opposed to the prior 900 years of British foreign policy this week like Winston Churchill who were pursuing immoral policies.
But it's happy talk.
It's happy talk like a lot of treaties multilateral treaties that are out there that make people feel good but don't have a real impact in in the in the broader world.
But I say again the gun control advocates of this country have been at this for fifteen years now and they haven't given.
I love a good test of this at the NRA -- at a time mentioned they -- and they send me a million emails they're fiercely but when I was an Arizona looking at this and the gun trafficking into Mexico what I was told by the AT Evans of the Harry I didn't make this -- -- what I was told.
Is it -- for coming in particular from China and Belgium coming into the United States lawfully and then going into Mexico then lawfully and -- even even if you have -- -- distribution guns -- moved around the world all the time.
Well I think the biggest problem for guns and Mexico's guns that are being stolen by the drug cartels from the military and the police or that the military and the police are selling them.
That this hole I mean this this is what I think fast and furious was all about it was an effort.
To prove that lacks American gun control laws where the problem in Mexico that's about as far from the truth as you can get IMS about the military -- in the Persian gulf region what do you make of that.
Well I think prudent military planning dictates that we be prepared in case Iran's threats to close the Strait of Hormuz.
Materialize and I think that's that's what's going on now I don't think that's what Iran's gonna do I think the the name of the game here.
For Iran is that as it is for the Obama administration is to kick anything serious beyond the US election.
That's why the negotiations have failed that's why the sanctions have failed that's why Iran simply continuing on its path to nuclear weapons and Russia would -- what's the latest -- that.
Look I don't see any evidence that rush is prepared to throw the Asad regime over the side they've got too much at stake there.
And you know even if beside himself left they would wanna ensure that the follow on regime protected Russian interest isn't there only foreign -- -- right in Syria well it's certainly there -- only base in the Mediterranean for their naval forces by the -- which they're building up close to the Syrian coastline.
-- -- Sarah thank you.
