-- -- Rand Paul of Kentucky senator I think this cuts across party lines what you -- to do with the Internet this is little left to right if she was really afraid to -- But the interesting thing about this is one of those things it brings the left and the right together neither one of us are short of compromising on the mushy middle.
Both believe strongly in privacy.
We believe that the Internet should have due process and that the government shouldn't get involved in the postings on the Internet.
So like Ron Wyden groups many would say is from the left yeah the Democrat party.
-- -- -- are good personal friends at least I believe we are.
And we work together on issues like this and I have worked together -- I work together and he was really the leader on this.
They're killing so and it killed in this the whole idea that the government would come -- -- just shut.
Process to Stop Online Piracy Act which I think was quite -- could have been quite dangerous.
Yeah and a lot of people thought it was gonna pass -- Christmas and the word on the among distaff was that it was gonna come down over the past -- -- -- through -- -- -- And the amazing thing was -- -- really the first time I think the Internet grassroots.
Which is a lot of young people and then some old -- like you're not yeah.
A lot of young people who are worried about the Internet to you know in the government -- and -- their privacy.
Really got together it wasn't a left right thing at all Knuble got involved ever do all pinch and you know people were blocking out -- web site.
It was an amazing thing -- -- -- for a good cause.
And I think they're more things like that in Washington.
And I'm a big believer that took a lot of just what I call MP.
Partisan.
Politics you know petty partisan politics -- You know we all get involved in -- -- believe -- -- they're there are actually could work now if we just have some reasonable commerce.
Beauty of the Internet to me was always an even though starters the the and you and there was no need for a authority so to speak to come and and and try to regulate stuff.
Well and she just opened just this enormous in the nobody knows what's coming next look at FaceBook and -- predicted you know some kids' college.
Create something work.
And billions of dollars.
But nobody can predict and that sort of has opened something -- believe -- could have imagined even existed.
But think of all the new jobs that have been created by that that's what we don't want to stifle that.
With too many rules and regulations.
And -- fits -- with people on the left it on the right who are concerned about First Amendment concerned about expression.
-- concerned about really the government looking at your records and no one of the things I've also worked for senator Wyden on.
Is that we're concerned about what's going on with the Patriot Act and also -- price.
Looking at our communications.
And the other day he invited me and I had to I had a -- I secure briefly -- -- -- -- not a lot of tell you here's what I am that you're -- and tell him.
I'm not let's see how many records they look at they make that classified the buildings completely ridiculous.
Dominant element if you look ballpark -- ballpark figure.
On how many of your email they're actually reading and looking at -- You'll tell.
Right now and then we -- listeners -- you used safely well.
We're pretty -- a gazillion.
Gazillion records.
And the number the actual number it's got -- order gazillion is some believe it out they're not think they don't accuse me of giving a national secrets.
But it's pretty close to a gazillion record that -- looked at every day.
By your government and my concern is that they're looking at what you're reading writing.
They can't you can't have that many government employees in a room somewhere reading all that script it's not possible isn't -- -- Tickets to the next point which is a great point is that if you really want to counteract terrorism.
If you can end -- yourself with a gazillion records which is what they're looking that you'll never get to a mall some point -- -- You do good old fashioned police work stop in the pavement and when you find out some guy came here three times from Yemen and he's communicating with the radical -- somewhere.
Let's spend time looking at his communication.
I'm with you on the Patriot Act on with the UN a lot of things that I think can.
You know I and so I'm disappointed some of my fellow Democrats we're continuing some of these policies that we're not even necessary right after 9/11 as far as I'm concerned.
Where you know -- one refrain I will mention sometimes to my counterparts on the Democrats sadness and it is.
Where are all the good liberals where are you -- what happened to you because.
Liberals and libertarians can get together and but I've got for example I was fighting against mandatory minimum sentences for drug -- not truly not for legalization.
But simply just a -- Your son and -- -- now they've made a mistake and I don't want my Sunday do drugs I got them involved but let's say they did and one of them died.
Accidentally.
It's a twenty year mandatory sentence -- didn't do drugs every day.
And -- it is my -- opponent on this what are the basic is a -- Democrat but I say not a very good level because he doesn't care.
Well I'm winning and that I'm not for cookie cutter justice -- -- believe in mandatory sentencing I think it's a bad idea.
Rand Paul is our guest senator -- -- back to the Internet for just a second you -- manifesto that your group put out.
But -- some key questions I think before we decide in any legislation that's necessary correct.
Absolutely and we have to really look at it this would have to look at it and be very careful.
And what I've been telling everybody on anything and -- -- the Internet predators cyber security or anything else.
Let's go slow.
Let's be careful that what we do it -- don't make rules.
-- have unintended consequences that all the sudden they find out if find out what magazines we read what blogs we read.
And people could -- -- that's over the top.
It isn't over the top and -- there are people who are interest didn't what you read and I think really in in a free society we need to be very strict.
Greg currently say is this a core function of the federal government does and execute cut socially defined duties is to protect constitutionally define -- does -- protect property rights does -- protect individual rights.
And of the federal government does not do this will others are some of the questions.
You.
Yeah and then the bottom line also -- -- If you're concerned about terrorism isn't expected to be looking to everyone's records is it would it be more effective to do.
Really what police have to do and that's what I've always ask -- If there's a rapists running around Washington DLY -- caught.
If they run into our house so I still want the police to call the church around my house cult didn't.
And ask for a war.
But typically -- -- -- running into the house you only need a warrant military admitted something where you need award.
They call in the middle of the night negative for rapists or super shuffle wanna catch -- There have -- -- due process and judges.
And I think the team Germans are articulate -- suspicion is gonna be a reason to go -- get a warrant from a -- or you can get a twenty for hours today right.
Anytime you know I want.
That -- and then -- police work because then you have to look at you have to investigate one person go to the next what people -- hole.
Through I can't say how many records are looking -- to a gazillion they want control crew all records.
And control into all of these records.
You know the question isn't -- this is the real danger that could -- and I asked some of the authors of this.
About this.
-- the Patriot Act if they troll these records and there were about terrorism.
But they find that you're bringing paint content up there all purpose and -- your house whip it its attacks in the Asian.
Can they use that against -- the paychecks for the first time since until more than have to have anything to do and we're just what church used in the pitcher for terrorism.
And find out -- that your.
I it's absolutely absurd.
By the way.
I you came after Mitt Romney in a surprise a lot of people to get I get calls almost every -- animation of saying they want Ron -- to get the nomination -- got a lot of Paul supporters.
Who we're not giving up.
Yeah you know the thing is is that pretty numbers are -- and you know my father -- acknowledged in his campaign that he will not get the nomination.
I always wanted them be still bumper stick.
You know I'm still at number one fan but.
In the end you know I'm a Republican and like so many things in life you end up supporting is the party nominee is -- -- -- a fan but he's chosen a different course.
And we won't be exactly the same but the people who have given me grief over this -- look at my voting record in our very very similar on voting records.
And you know if you want perfection -- -- for all -- -- inspection is only used reiterates his -- particular individual -- From the goodness sakes don't.
Completely.
Vilify someone just because -- you know supporting the nominee.
There is no perfect candidate but doesn't he walk in to Tampa with a great deal of -- based on the delicacies -- Yeah he's got 1415100.
Probably delegates you have to 11100 no and -- you come on my dad might have 200.
That will give him some clout.
And I -- will be down there my hope is that we can have some influence on what the platform is there are people in.
My -- world as well my world who in the platform committee who will be working hard on this.
And will fight for the the battles say -- is that we can win.
I appreciate dug in his senator thanks so once again for your time is a support I think sometimes -- but where the left and right can come together.
And we're liberals I think sometimes ought to be and where I think the Democratic Party -- to be in some of these key issues.
Yeah I think there's more that we can do together I tell so well I think senator Barkley.
We both work together on trying to remove troops from Afghanistan get people to come so there's a lot of things and and agree on the war powers that the legislature should be there -- not just the president.
So there's a lot.
-- they completely can be more.
Thank you sir appreciate your time.
