The campaigns when he twelve segment tonight the Republican veep stakes.

Buzz is building over Mitt Romney is running mate and reports say that former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice is on the governor short list I -- her name back in April.

If you talk to the party chairman people who are strategic in their thinking about what it will take to get Mitt Romney.

-- our past Barack Obama.

They're saying you know what here's someone -- Rice with political credibility she's nobody's token appointment she speaks to be.

Hispanics and blacks in the country and women specifically in a very credible way.

That says to them this is -- forward looking.

Candidates -- being held by Mitt Romney.

Hot.

-- rice ticket is sparking passionate debate in conservative circles and joining me now to analyze from Washington.

Stephen Hayes the senior writer at the weekly standard.

Steve I know you're skeptical about this you don't think it would be a good decision tell me what.

I don't although I have to say I agree with everything that you just -- about an and her credibility about.

The things that she would bring to the ticket the message it was -- there's nothing we disagree -- it.

I think there are couple reasons that guide them skeptical that he will picker and I'm but I don't think it would be wise for her to do that.

The reason I don't think -- -- is because he said in an interview with me that he had.

Won't actually be even be considering a pro choice running mate Condoleezza Rice is pro choice she said.

She described herself as moderately pro choice and I think the Romney campaign has tried so hard to avoid having.

Governor Romney flip flop on -- thing given the fact that he had been so criticized for doing so in the past.

They will be loath to put somebody who's pro choice on the ticket when he has already ruled that out.

That's I think the reason that he is unlikely to do why shouldn't do it she brings back the Bush Administration foreign policy which is controversial both inside conservative circles.

In and the rest of the country.

Yeah I think there are a lot of reasons that that people would be skeptical.

Well let me just ask you this the this story really emerged as a result of the Drudge Report putting -- at the top of their website today.

And lots of people think well gee -- this just the conversation change here is this really to get people away from talking about -- and all the attacks on Mitt Romney.

Do you like I know your syndicate your mind and -- But do you think that's what's going on -- or do you think this is real that there really is some consideration because you as you know mrs.

Romney has -- a woman is under serious consideration.

For the vice presidential slot.

Yeah I mean I find very hard to believe that he would he would kicker for the reasons I suggested and and and others but I mean I think that this is most likely a distraction if you look at.

That that conversation has been taking place over the past couple days and a conversation about.

-- national debate about Mitt Romney's taxes about where he was on Bain Capital.

Think the Romney campaign has fought ably to to it to -- fight off the charges from the Obama campaign.

And -- and at least to a drop but it's not the kind of conversation that the Romney campaign wants be having much better in their mind.

To be having a conversation about potential vice presidential picks particularly someone -- is accomplished and well respected.

As Condoleezza Rice is regarded by I think voters across the country and voters in in both political parties as well as independent.

Okay now one of the critical points you raised in the one that I think -- this is seriously summer treat it seriously Steve.

If -- serious I can imagine conservatives saying but she's pro choice.

And I can imagine people saying you know -- It's going to be hard to accept that yes she'd shake things up yes she'd appeal to women yes -- appeal to minorities.

It would be a game changer but.

She's pro choice.

-- -- Yes due to problems -- -- potentially one social conservatives would be upset about you Barney had a statement out.

-- Friday afternoon from the Susan B.

Anthony list thing that she would be an unacceptable choice on the substance I think you got objections.

From conservatives from social conservatives from pro lifers.

But again I think the bigger problem at least in terms of of of practicality.

The reason that Mitt Romney would.

Not want to pick her because she's pro choice is because he's already ruled that out.

And it would raise all of these charges again and again that he's a flip flop -- but he -- what if it was the difference between winning and losing Steve I think people want to beat Barack Obama so badly.

That they're willing to make sun.

Compromises if you will on the social issues remember what Mitch Daniels that we should run this campaign about the economy not the social issues.

So is -- part of what you would say let's just do what.

I don't think they want to be talking about the social issues but.

I don't think that that would be the kind of thing that that Mitt Romney would wanna compromise on given what he said about in the past all right Steve thanks so much for --
