Is the Obama administration taking this threat seriously enough joining us now is the chair of the house select intelligence committee.
Mike Rogers congressman great to see you did you believe this administration is doing enough.
To check the emerging threat from Iran well -- they've done some good things they just haven't gone far enough we could pull forward some of the sanctions that.
A congress put in place in 2010.
-- the president has given waivers to certain countries when we're trying to put pressure on the regime China being the number one as a country that they've given a waiver to in dealings with Iran so does that undercut the whole idea it's certainly slows it down then so we're gonna have to take a tougher -- so if we want to stop Iran from going nuclear by the way John.
What that means is a nuclear arms race in the Middle East if they go nuclear you can bet Saudi Arabia and Turkey and Egypt and others -- talk about going nuclear as well as we saw a couple of years ago Syria have been pursuing a program as well absolutely in Libya was well on his way and so what you don't want is that destabilizing.
Nuclear arms race in the Middle East you can imagine is dangerous and out those neighborhoods now imagine.
What would look like is in India have nuclear armed.
Region of the world so congress is considering tough new sanctions on Iraq what would you like to see half.
Well I would go after the IR GC folks any company that they're affiliated with any of the shipping insurance companies that would provide services to anyone affiliated with the -- -- as you -- -- Iranian revolutionary -- that's correct that's -- so these -- the folks that are keeping and the oppressive nature of the state and protecting their ability to continue their nuclear weapons development.
Very very serious and you need to start ratcheting back these waivers the president has said.
Well they're cooperating and in China isn't buying as much oil but the statistics just don't bear it out.
If you want to have an impact in the short term to avoid any military conflict you're gonna have to be really tough.
On these -- so China has to be in the mix.
Other European of folks have to be in the mix as well so this recent pronouncement by the head of M -- six spy agency in Britain that Iran could have a bomb within two years and then you couple that with the recent pentagon announcement.
That they could have an Intercontinental ballistic missile within three years.
How much concern does that give you about what's going on -- we spent a lot of time until I was really worried about this problem and it is real and it is serious.
And remember Israel is in this mixes well they've got to make a pretty tough decision here they can't wait on the United States to make a decision they're gonna have to make their own decision.
Egypt is no longer a reliable partner.
Hezbollah now is armed with the many believe is twenty to 30000 very accurate missile systems.
And then they have on top of all of that they have Iran possibly going nuclear so.
Serious serious problems and those predictions are just that predictions.
There are key things that could happen that could.
Shorten that two year time frame before they got a nuclear -- I -- you -- share with us all the intelligence you have that we've we've recently saw the talks with Iran about the nuclear program when absolutely.
Nowhere looks like nothing much more than finished a sham to buy more time.
If Iran keeps going down the road of building as we believe a nuclear weapon and these talks and if if they get resurrected again and -- not go nowhere do you think Israel.
Will launch a preemptive strike and when might they do that yeah I hate to -- to to predict that I think that.
They are seriously calculating what it would mean for them to have to go in and take a military strike.
What has not -- is the fact that the United States has -- strong police said that military.
Intervention is still on the table and I think we have to make that very clear we don't want that to happen.
But it will happen if they don't believe Iran doesn't believe that the United States will use military.
Action to stop their nuclear program we have to make them believe -- would have to be serious about using it.
We think that that could.
At least feed into the calculus of Israel should -- or should they not take military action to stop a nuclear Iran who set by the way they use it on Israel to -- keep -- watching this closely congressman Rogers good to see today it's time thanks.
