Mitt Romney on the offensive today speaking out about something -- Obama said in Virginia on the stump that's.

Raised a lot of eyebrows especially in conservative circles the president.

Saying he defended the remark today saying we as a nation do better do things better together and we rise and fall as one nation.

We'll start there tonight with the politics politics let's bring in our panel Steve Hayes senior writer for the weekly standard we welcome Ben Feller White House correspondent for the Associated Press.

And syndicated columnist Charles crowd.

OK Ben what's your assessment of this back and forth and hasn't been playing today clearly Mitt Romney seemed energized on the stump on this one point.

The -- the governor was fired up -- he was firing he's trying to get back on message I mean this may shock you but there are some license being taken with exactly what was said.

Governor Romney pulled out the part of the quote that said.

You know if if you build something that wasn't view.

And for the full context of the president's comments earlier grown up -- actually a little bit broader and that he said we've got a government that has a system that set up to thrive for individuals.

People build -- people teachers are in school that's a government responsibility.

It wasn't just you on your own.

-- the focus of governor Romney is -- is to.

Is to say.

We need a government and we need a president.

Who understands the private business is at the core.

And every time he shifts the focus to that it puts the onus back on President Obama to talk about how he is the one in charge of and the sluggish job growth.

What we saw today -- Romney with some way to get off.

The campaign of the last week you know the main.

Discrepancies -- when he left is ears and not gonna release more years of tax returns and so he he did -- more energized and I think he was on message on the.

-- Yeah I actually agree with Ben I I think the context of the what the president said he was I think when he said.

And I think it's probably I'm not sure the president deserves the benefit of the doubt that way that they've been characterizing.

Contention now is that if you look at the longer context it doesn't help the president in fact it makes it in some ways worse because.

He's arguing in effect that business can't get by on its own and he hit his longer has longer.

Businesses -- -- exactly what Mitt Romney there is saying in the -- in that comment that he may be taken out of context I think -- was Smart today.

To get beyond this to say.

The reason that the president is so obsessed with with -- is because he doesn't understand the way business works and there are plenty of examples that -- can give you can say.

He he can talk about being present Obama in in Iowa saying.

When he was asked about why small businesses are hiring as a result of obamacare saying -- around that just isn't the case there are plenty of examples of him from making and he started giving -- today.

Charles is back and forth about how many tax returns he's going to put out he says he's going to put out 21 when it counts -- finish with with 2011.

He did provide more than twenty of them to John McCain has he was being vetted for possible VP pick.

With John McCain Senator McCain responded to did reporters asking questions about those very tax returns.

That he saw.

There was nothing disqualifying.

He and his tax returns and that is a fact.

And again please end.

To somehow the enemy that without any basis in fact.

Is this -- campaign that this Obama campaign is running and it is disgraceful.

And they can't talk about the economy so they have to make personal attacks.

Against it couldn't decently.

The follow -- question obviously Charles is if there's nothing in the twenty plus why put out to.

Because once -- doing it never stops and you concede the premise to the opposition that -- hiding something.

He given three years you're gonna want 66.

Two years is enough and this is playing into the Obama's strategy.

The real issue of that campaign is precisely what Obama's head.

That's precisely at the center of the division between left and right.

But -- Republican and democratic how do you see that they're free enterprise and capitalism and American society Obama said clearly.

That it's rooted in its successes as a result of government infrastructure.

And he and and the worst part about it is that he says it's because we're all in this it together it's society that ultimately supports you.

Yes society but Obama always they -- society.

Of collective action we've government.

In fact society of civil society it's a family it's the church it's still a little platoons that -- talked about -- -- -- -- About how Americans organizer of themselves.

-- organizations.

The voluntary.

That society that's what sustains -- he's not government and this emphasis on government.

And it's at the root of all good in America is what's wrong with the Obama.

Vision and that's what we're on the auto attack and that's what the campaign ought to be about.

-- yesterday the president cited a report from.

A -- supports the president and economist.

Saying that 800000 jobs would be sent overseas.

Behind Mitt Romney's tax proposals today the independent research organization Ernst and young came out with its own report.

And it essentially said that increasing taxes on families making more than 250000 dollars a year would cost hundreds of thousands of jobs and there you see.

All of the bullet points GDP down employment falls.

And here's the quote this report finds that these higher marginal tax rates result in the smaller economy fewer jobs.

Less investment lower wages specifically finds -- higher tax -- will have significant adverse economic economic effects in the long run lowering output employment investment.

Capital stocks real after tax wages when the resulting revenues used to finance additional government spending.

So I guess.

It's the battle of reports we always talk everybody can point to a study.

How do you think this plays and and the real facts in this debate play out on the trail.

Well I think you've hit it there that each side is gonna continue to take the report they want.

And it comes up -- -- news cycle on the next on the next one and it's interesting to see how far we get away from the prime debate.

The Charles raised about what's the role of government.

And how do we create jobs in America so the tax returns and everything else are sort of points beneath and I think.

The Obama campaign the president.

Thinks that this issue is a winner right the study -- they would probably find lot of fault with the one yesterday.

Governor Romney had issues with and in terms of how it was put together -- put together.

But the underlying point that President Obama is not gonna -- from is that taxes must go up.

For those for the the wealthier Americans.

And he's not gonna stray from that in fact he he thinks that's a winning point up through the election wants to have.

The -- -- young is a little different in and that it's nonpartisan but.

He's right -- studies will will keep your that's exactly right you're gonna have people with competing studies -- do you think Pearson has some credibility they've got a track record.

On these issues but I think this needs to be the second argument that Mitt Romney makes it can't just be.

President Obama is clueless about the economy he needs he needs to say the president when he understands the economy.

As he has in the past he suggested that raising taxes in the Taiwan economic downturn will be bad for the economy would -- damage the economy.

He said it at least twice -- around east and say when he shows an understanding of the economy he's willing to sort of to underplayed that -- -- so that he can advance his own political interest there's got to be sort of a second punch if you're the Romney campaign.
