We continue our listening to voters series this morning today we take you the state of New Mexico.

And -- volcanic do you remember what happened in New Mexico twelve years ago.

And the election of 2000 George Bush won the state by about 370.

Votes that was it.

And 2004.

In New Mexico on our map behind here he won it again beating John Kerry by about 6000 votes it was the closest race in the country.

Which would seem to think that may be New Mexico is a battleground state yet again.

But four years ago in 2008 President Obama easily won the state by fifteen points.

Over John McCain -- New Mexico has an issue that is worse than almost every other states.

And that's the issue of education so we went to the county of -- volcanic.

-- critical area in this state how does education play in November.

Have a look.

I have seen things that just are not right it's happening to our kids.

G and Dana Hassey are fed up with the schools and sent a ball -- They moved here thirty years ago transplants in the midwest hoping for greater opportunity.

And they found it until four years ago.

We have kids that can't read to kids that can't right.

I think it's time to get back to the basics with reading and writing and arithmetic.

When the economy went under they say the school there -- eleven year old daughter Emma was attending went downhill with it.

You are now four months away from -- presidential election yes who -- could improve the school system and New Mexico.

That's good question he's a Republican but says Mitt Romney has yet to win her vote.

Whoever does win in November will face a big challenge here.

Turning around a public school system that has failed by nearly every measure education in New Mexico has been a black -- for the entire state.

High school graduation rates put New Mexico 48 out of fifty in America today -- the eighth grade level.

Math and reading scores are not much better.

Margaret where is a retired teacher who was seen this system from the inside out.

Her two grandkids are in the district today she's a Democrat but is leaning toward Mitt Romney I don't think.

-- Obama's approach to education has really considered small school districts rural school districts.

States like New Mexico -- -- cylinders daughter jade will be an eighth grade next year.

He believes the broken system is tied to a broken economy.

Really if you wanna change the economy change educational -- Change the way from the students are graduating from high school changed the way their thoughts are they going to go to college do they even think about that.

Sandoval county covers a huge area and whatever choice it makes -- November back a bit messy house better days cannot come soon enough.

America.

They tell us it's not.

Best country out there and it probably is I don't see anything better.
