On the role of government in business.

Governor Romney responding yesterday targeting the president's reference to business creation.

To say that Steve Jobs didn't build apple that Henry Ford -- build Ford Motor.

That Ray -- didn't build McDonald's that.

That Bill Gates and -- Microsoft you go on the list like that that Joseph and his colleagues didn't build this enterprise to say something like that is not just foolishness.

It's insulting to every ought to -- or every innovator in America.

Let's get a fair and balanced debate going on these remarks which as we said I've been heating up the campaign Mary Katharine Ham is editor at large of -- -- dot com and a Fox News contributor.

Brian Clayton is a democratic campaign consultant who has worked on the campaign trail for ten years.

Brian do you first a lot of people say that the president's remarks were taken out of context but he does seem to suggest.

That that so much of this success wouldn't have taken place without government.

-- President Obama essentially said that the government builds roads and build schools and provides valuable public services and that business owners.

Build businesses on top of those public investments you know and especially since corporations are some of the largest users of our public court system and they lobby our government for special treatment -- spend millions of dollars and our electoral process.

Release they can do is admit that they are super heavy users of our government services and they need to pay a little bit back -- to fund those government services to -- you can't run a government without revenue being in the US corporate tax rate is the highest in the world is is it sounds like you're defending that tax -- Well corporations -- many times pay zero dollars in federal income taxes like GE FedEx and Verizon you know they hide their money in international banks.

And they ship millions of jobs overseas in -- frankly I think that's un American what they should be doing is investing in America because we don't just need.

Businesses making millions of dollars -- everybody doing well -- we need.

People that have money that can spend money in those businesses we -- People would jobs or condoned the small businesses and their community and that app purchasing power in the middle class you know that aren't gonna kick start this economy let's let's get back to what the president had to say Mary Catherine what are you take away from his remarks.

Well first -- Barack Obama hired Jeffrey Immelt head of GE he's getting a bunch of tax credits for all this green stuff that the president loves so he might wanna deal with that in his own house second of all people think conduct contest first of all.

He said it.

You've got a business you didn't bill that somebody else made that happen basic context look at the contact he.

He actually denigrates the hard work and Smart as required to start a business he says.

What a lot of people are Smart people are hardworking and he then -- credit to people who go out there and take the risk and make it happen.

The formulation also completely ignores the fact that corporations and businesses and business people and start them pay a lot of seconds into the public -- this is not us vs them these guys pay no taxes and you pay.

All of them in fact it's almost opposite they -- a -- of taxes and many of us don't pay nearly as much so.

It's just.

It's not an us vs them thing and this is a really disturbing -- me it seems completely opposite to what many Americans -- which Brack Obama seems like he's saying look your business.

In the tap that I can turn off and on when I need.

Revenue and mostly on because you -- -- right Brett coming against the backdrop of the Obama administration wanting to change the rules on welfare to make it easier for people -- to avoid the work requirement of welfare it does seem.

Like he sort of denigrating the value of work in this country.

Well I think what he wants to do is make sure that everybody can provide for their family that they can put food on the table -- -- -- over there had but I think President Obama the main point he's making is that things like the Internet are amazing successes and those things were invested in by the government you know our government.

Created the Internet and that it's changed the world in the course of a few short years and you know without that government investment.

Badgers wouldn't exist and without the Internet the camera -- my little Internet.

How many businesses wouldn't exist how many jobs would have been created how -- success stories would have gone -- you see it's hot outside you're gonna be -- -- here and take that argument Ryan to the nth degree I mean would the Internet exists.

If Bill Gates hadn't done something with computer code.

It's of course I -- all working together as Americans to take us forward and to build an economy that's built -- last.

But you see your individual success is not just basing your individual talents and merits and your drive it's also rooted.

And a society that values public education -- values public investment.

That about evaluating a better America for every one to.

All right Mary -- right.

The point is you want to be glorifying the kind of don't send it takes to start your own business this -- -- you've got the welfare stuff gutting work.

Requirements for that you've got the USDA begging people to get on print stamps and ads saying why don't actually qualified for them -- give them what you should get on anyway these things are not things that mainstream Americans.

Actually appreciate.

And I do believe that this is what Barack Obama believes -- believe it's what he meant to say Elizabeth Warren said that the couple months ago and it's been the toast of the liberal town.

Newsday that I think he's he's the greatest sort of our time -- so exact merited our Internet deal like the Internet -- My name's Mary Catherine and I love the Internet.

I love the Internet -- and thankfully the American government agreed to the Internet I think right -- that it will collect their money come on it came from businesses and individuals and people who have -- risk and give you their money it's.

I don't like -- construction where you and Obama say hey you Alaska's we built some roads and how if -- -- good hitters some credit for what we've created if you want to force.

This is if you wanna get more specific -- it was actually a pentagon project in the last I love the Pentagon's budget is getting slashed massively so I guess that's their thank you.
