Welcome to another edition special report on line I'm Bret -- if you haven't been here before welcome aboard this is where you can.

Type in comments asks questions to the panel.

And also vote on some of the polls that we're scrolling along here.

We obviously are not finished because Steve has more to -- -- About.

The -- The comment you didn't build that we're gonna -- my third shot at the apple here.

Bite of the apple let's bring in our Kelsey Hayes senior editor with the standard Casey -- we welcome first online show national political.

Reporter for the Associated Press of course syndicated comes Charles -- Okay Steve.

And we're gonna do.

We're going to break up this much time for that -- him.

Let's start at the beginning yes and stop it out there okay.

If you've been successful you don't even get -- on your.

Don't know that I'm always talk about people who think well -- most because I was just so Smart.

There must.

-- was the second out there but.

That part to keep going to second round.

-- -- -- You find that part I -- that part very problematic for the president I think that's where his problems began.

Exactly the -- I mean you're used to hearing that kind of an argument I've heard that kind of an argument before but it's been you know.

In a graduate seminar somewhere in in ivory tower and you know would that hard work and -- in effect does -- matter or doesn't matter as much as what he's about to list which is.

Roads and bridges and all of these things that the government does so that's where I think his his problem starts and that is why whenever we think about the sentence that we're going to play.

The Obama campaign has a tough sell.

-- says love me some Steve -- so you've sold her OK that green eyed lady says I understand you Steve your crystal clear.

Next sentence please play it.

-- -- someone in your life.

That's unbelievable American system that we have not allowed beautiful.

So don't keep on keep on roads and bridges you can ambassador roads and bridges -- you got a business.

That.

Okay where it's tough to stop start that's the part where the Obama campaign says there's just it is theory -- government roads government helped you create your business he didn't do it by yourself.

Well I think.

-- -- people can disagree over exactly what.

It was -- trying to say but in the greater context Obama is no question articulating a fundamentally different emphasis on.

What we should look for in our economy then candidate probably is who starts from the other side and focuses on people who are.

Entrepreneurs and innovators in dreamers he likes a column because now this Charles -- just.

-- a little bit further but he starts if you've got a business.

-- -- -- -- Yeah.

-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- So that all the companies Goodman.

It.

The point is is that when we succeed.

We succeed because ordinary individual initiative but also because we do things together.

And get it's hard to know where to start don't throw -- a true reality.

-- interpretation of how the end is created he says so that other people can make money off it.

It is exactly how government centered individuals would look at that in fact it was -- in the defensive department as a way for scientists to communicate.

With each other it was not thought of as having -- commercial application it was a Swiss guy whose name is hyphenated and I don't remember is -- guy who turned it into a public Internet.

So that's so almost -- beside the point number number one as I indicated earlier everybody he takes out his help to the way his government.

If you're a conservative if you -- I think an ordinary American right of center American as we generally are.

As our majority -- you would say.

Who influenced you -- the only your father your mother your family.

Your church your associations.

Your neighbors you wouldn't start with the government you might include.

Obama sees a government as the expression of society.

Exclusively and that's where he starts to go off the rails.

That's a very hard -- point of view where it's a government that helps you out it's not the civil society.

And in fact on the hard left the more you grow the government.

And you crave the love highs and that we have today the more you squeeze out.

Civil society -- -- he would -- the opportunity and the influence of church and parents etc.

So that's the second element in this and the third is the argument is complete nonsense.

We all use roads and bridges what separates us -- that some people have this extra energy extra intelligence extra innovation.

Thinking extra hard work and some genius like a job Steve Jobs.

And that explains the different outcomes that's chemistry 101.

You you have a sample here in the chandelier and Texas constant but why is a variable he had a different outcome it's -- why it's not PX it's not the constant.

So I don't see how he can make the state I would play it over and over again the full context and I think you sink his.

Presidency because it makes it into exactly the kind of ideological debate if you want to have -- -- a person on the left is gonna lose in this country.

-- Connecticut says Charles it's not too late and -- the race you've got I -- I appreciate that sincerely bit of declare right now if nominated I will not run that if elected I would -- -- -- -- here I'm just lazy arrest that operated and perhaps.

I guess that's it Casey it goes to a different level it's not like the average.

It doesn't seem like it's just.

Again it doesn't see it -- seems like it transcends that even Democrats will say to you.

Yeah that this is kind of bigger than.

The average home.

-- Well I think it does go to the heart of what Republicans are trying to say about Obama that as Charles has articulated.

You know he thinks that the government is more of a solution to the economic issues at hand.

Then it is small business -- that's exactly what.

The Republicans would like to think and that one line regardless of the context if you've got a business you didn't build that somebody else made that happen is going to be in college less -- you -- that's just fat piece right.

Here's my theory just theory.

The president's been.

106 fundraisers in six months and he's off teleprompter as we've we've said and sometimes you get tired and sometimes things come out the wrong way and perhaps it's a filter thing where.

As you point out it goes to a bigger ideological battle that you know and it is slipped out but he's he got tired and is a possible state.

Yeah I think that's not only possible I think that's likely look when -- when you're gonna comfortable audience and you used to being in as many fund -- he's been doing.

Did you do there's not -- sort of governor on the things that you say that there might otherwise be.

And we seen this previously I -- can't remember the exact line which probably screw up the the anecdote.

But Steven Chu was testifying in front of congress and said something that was so totally.

You know out there I think it's going into a village to crucified if I have in mind if I can't remember exactly what it was but it was one of these things that I think will win and in fact I think we've we've made this point we talked about it.

If if he would giving this speech to you know the Sierra clobber to a group that would be fully behind the kinds of things he's argued.

It probably wouldn't cause anybody didn't.

You know.

-- raise their eyebrows.

But in a broader context and certainly in congress.

It was the kind of line that really jumped out at people Eddie says no -- came out the correct way.

Think OK I mean if you if you believe the spot what I was saying is that.

The traditional filters.

Or not there to prevent it from happening.

That's.

I would add to to the fatigue and the idea being a friendly audience the way the audience egged him on he was getting into this.

It was exactly the kind of thing where if you speak in private I mean the kind of thing he said remember no way he was caught saying in San Francisco and a private.

The group -- of people of middle America they're bitter because they're losing their jobs so they claim to god and guns and fear of the other.

Stuff you would never say on the outside that you -- whisper on the inside.

That's sort of separate guest rights are you for real disappointed he wasn't tired he was speaking would be truly believes I thought -- he wouldn't say that in the traditional media event forty.

And -- scene immediately and -- know that.

This moment would be used as it's being used currently as a politician it's like a prisoner being kept up all night being interrogated.

And after eighteen hours or that he says the -- blurted out without even thinking.

That's the -- -- that's the filter -- the governor comes down and he says.

That's why it's so damaging because it's obviously what he believes -- explains some of this population is in the interest intent as a thought experiment it to do we we were saying our fair trials where where you proposed.

Substituting in roads and bridges so you give -- the Obama campaign exactly what they say that he intended to say.

You if you've got a business you didn't build those roads and bridges somebody else made that happen.

And see if that would be something that they would be eager to put back -- -- speeches that he's about to give.

On the campaign -- because I don't think you always even have a case in the context as exculpatory -- clearly today's speech dealt with hardworking Americans.

Who put in elbow grease who you know I mean it was much it was directly.

Rebutting what he said.

And that's him and it also comes across it to a certain extent as an attack more than the rest of this section you know he's.

In the rest of it he's asking people to say listen I appreciate the people -- helped you throughout your life and I don't think anyone's disputing that that's something that we all do.

But on the other hand to say you have something and you are not responsible for creating it it's out of context with the tone of the rest of the section even if there is ideological difference.

People I think we're gonna move -- -- next up and let me keep.

Keep going.

The horse is obviously get ready.

Are typing and remember the fund raiser in San Francisco Horry said people cling to their guns in their bibles -- guns -- -- religion.

Yes and that was a fund raiser behind closed doors I don't think he knew that the audio was going to get out of that he -- he's a politician -- -- went so he wouldn't.

I'm somebody you know making excuses by saying that you could be tired.

It's just that welcomed my world that's fantastic I'm gonna happen -- that -- -- He agencies that we say when retired and we go to camera right there -- look at merit.

OK let's move on the what's my next topic.

We want -- How obvious statement you made in Virginia on Friday night -- I don't know that if they.

I really didn't feel that it's okay -- -- are good they are big paychecks.

Fifth.

This.

Looks like look for a little while like it was going to develop quickly -- it seems now that is going to happen after.

-- goes to Europe.

And maybe even after that after the Olympics are over what's the -- -- -- they wanted to talk about that a little bit and we were talking about this before to how long it took the running campaign to seize on this issue that we just discussed at length and they we're talking about it on Monday when they were instead talking about potentially releasing a vice presidential pick by the end of the week because they wanted to push.

Away from some media stories about Romney's tenure at Bain.

I actually haven't seen that -- is event tomorrow in New Hampshire and then won't have any public events for a few days until he makes a big speech in Reno.

To the veterans of foreign wars will have kept off his week.

Plus long trip to he's going to London and then heading over to Israel and then finishing up in Poland do you think that they're going to use the Olympics.

Experience and solid city well as a remind.

Absolutely and one thing we haven't seen -- did you yet since the beginning of the general election is really highlight his tenure in Salt Lake City and he you know did a lot of work to turn those games around I think you're gonna see Democrats try to attack that ten year over the course the next week.

But he's really use that as an opportunity on NBC of course will be broadcasting over there -- sounds like he's gonna use that opportunity to.

Make sure that he's in a lot of living rooms during that time.

Caption when he didn't mean these -- stuff that we I've heard that.

That there are things about it that might be -- I don't know the I'm really uniforms are made some places well that's right.

There are some questions about -- on a regular basis for.

One thing -- running actually addresses he wrote a book about his tenure at I'm right in the Olympics -- turnaround and one thing he addresses an incident where he had a confrontation with the police officer that wasn't allowing proper transportation up the mountain out of he tries to explain away his opponents -- allege that he didn't conduct himself.

Totally professionally I'm Democrats and also suggested that some of the sponsorship deals that might have been made could have benefited.

Bain Capital or some other entity that would have benefited from me so.

Have to say that I mean people love the Olympics here and it's it's -- clean topic.

And you're surprised -- -- I'm surprised you got I'm Emanuel who rescued him you know he's a guy who who get who brought in on an emergency basis.

It's in a bribery scandal is that it's way behind on time and money.

He turns it around it's a great success it's a turnaround -- not a private companies -- would it against the main line of attack.

There's a public enterprise he comes -- he turns it around to great success people all know what the Olympics are it's -- obscure like.

You know like -- and I just don't see why they haven't.

But -- and a place to roll out -- when everyone is watching.

-- wild attack and that's true in their -- vulnerabilities there that we don't know about it is that I'm here and rumors that -- might just go to Israel important.

And not go to London.

The -- good tennis I tell you you'd be surprised I'd be surprised that.

Yes he had Bill Russell wasn't that it wasn't the case that -- this -- back in 2008 campaign.

Where he was criticized for taking government money.

And so he was he's playing himself as you know and this small government conservative ends and was at the same time going in and getting additional government funds for the -- question -- hours.

I know Imus Imus sort of libertarian as it comes on spending issues but that seems to me I would rather see an attack you could you can make the argument.

If he's a man who brought it to America the way Obama wanted Summer Olympics to be.

In Chicago his argument would be look I came in it was already hear the prestige United States.

The name of the United States you know the the the idea the United States as efficient and confident country was at stake.

So we had to do everything that you could including using the money of the government your answer would not be a reputation yet.

And as well -- -- one of the reasons why so much money was spent on the Olympics in Salt Lake City was because it happened so close -- 9/11 it was the first major global event that was put on in that security situation itself so huge percentage.

-- -- -- The fact that a lot of -- Money was spent.

On the Olympics.

And the fact that he seems to be running with Friday the thirteenth so this statement pretty heavily but again I would say it was the government United States.

The namely the United States is a national enterprise already in place and he -- had to deal wrestlers.

And you use all means available you might mean Obama Zorn wanted us to go -- and bring the Chicago and basically say why are we spending.

The effort the -- -- the president and the money of the treasury to do that but that was a decision that that predates -- -- Salt Lake he comes in as the white horse I think.

Well and to keep in mind I mean that's.

An argument with primary voters it's little more problematic for spending lots of government money on something I mean swing voters independent voters I mean it's ask your neighbors and your friends the Olympics mean.

Why wouldn't we spend government money -- I don't lizards in Kinshasa.

Is some of these and so makes it okay that's my original thing VP choice.

Pawlenty Portman.

Ryan.

-- third round and regional.

Maybe Jindal won't -- -- Doesn't seem like she's in the running anymore and -- said that.

He wants a pro life candidate who is she told that Carl Cameron.

What -- Steve.

If I were making bets today I would that I need to pull -- -- -- probably.

Pawlenty and put more money on -- than I would on.

Portman at this point and I think Paul Ryan's real -- -- you know the reason and I and I think Paul Ryan remains a long shot -- it.

The way that he would want to run in the way that he speaks.

Conflicts with.

That the entire theory of the race that the Romney campaign seems to be fouling him.

Romney himself has laid out this theory of the race when he speaks to private groups and when he speaks.

To take campaign contributors and -- effectively says what what case hasn't.

There are ten battleground states there before what I -- 45% without trying.

President Obama gets 47% without trying to were fighting over the remaining slice him.

That's what he wants to do and I think they think.

The first job is not to do any harm not to say anything controversial method you're going to get attacked by Paul Ryan's budget wanna get the guy who is in the -- and the best yes this is the argument for for including I -- we started to see we saw a little bit today and there's no question that it's coming we've seen Joseph Biden.

Hit them on this.

Congressman -- in introducing President Obama just a half hour ago.

Was hitting on Medicare I mean this -- is coming Joseph Trippi when I talked to him for about peace and in about Paul Ryan for the weekly standard this week.

Said all of these Bain attacks are in effect set up.

For the coming attacks on the Ryan budget.

It's cool October's going to be about the Ryan budget and that argument would be bring in Paul Ryan he can defend it he talks about -- better than anyone any.

And in several head to head confrontations -- he had with President Obama he came out I think.

I'm on top.

On the Medicare thing the president was on the -- mentioned it today but.

And although mentioned the old.

Medicare proposal one year ago he didn't mention the proposal that Brian amended and is now the one current.

Which says an option would be to choose Medicare as one of the options that you have instead of the voucher system solely it's the same one the Democrat.

Senator Wyden.

Favors and so the president may be on the stump today was running against something that -- be year old.

But anyway we'll get back to DP what do you think.

And it.

If you watch how in all of these folks have been sort of doing -- additions over the course of the last.

Few months and one person you've seen the Romney campaign put a lot of trust in is Rob Portman and -- allowed him to sort of step out on his own and do his own media veils.

Excuse me like talk to the -- by himself which is something that you know the Romney campaign is very careful about you've seen him.

You know going out there.

You know directly regarding the president Ohio news in Cincinnati -- this -- where -- from.

And of course he is from critical Ohio so if you're choosing between two people like Rob Portman and Tim Pawlenty where do you come down those -- -- have to be critical.

-- -- I'm not sure -- as -- and he I think I think this is -- do no harm choice for Romney I think he thinks.

He doesn't have to go long.

Into a short pass and he wins or loses a race on his own perhaps.

Portman to help them in Ohio marginally I don't think anybody's really brought in a state.

Since -- Texas in 1960 and that was with an enormous amount of cheating.

By LBJ so I'm not sure about is if he thinks Ohio is going to be.

Close and he doesn't want a risky Michael Portman I think the Pawlenty thing is it kind of insulation.

So perhaps it would be seen as a balancing of the class issue.

Pawlenty is you know as the Log Cabin Republicans really don't mean to him that in the -- -- I mean.

Lincoln -- coming out of you know poverty.

Thank you for the clarification.

It's your chance to receive email.

I got married -- today where you don't ask don't go ahead.

We could go out and others were you know he's got beat -- on fire tonight -- the roots you know of their.

From you know it's sort of the -- story and Republicans guys you know -- ground -- hands.

It's that kind of thing that might be a way to balance the attacks under the personal attacks on Romney the right things -- using for one reason I think that.

I hate to return to -- if you build the business.

-- -- and still that was kind of feel that -- yeah are really did.

But if you look at the right budget in the text -- it they speak about Obama and the government centered approach.

And the republic in and with the free enterprise.

Centered approach.

That is sort of the heart of the ideological argument if there's anybody in the country who can make it.

And who could exploit what I think could become this huge issue the ideological divide.

It would be him but it's a risk because then you get -- on Medicare.

I -- the -- in Wisconsin and there was this public policy polling Wisconsin last week that suggests that.

The race in which isn't six point advantage of President Obama right now becomes a tossup -- Paul -- is -- -- -- -- Wisconsin.

Dave from Connecticut says could Mitch Daniels be VP.

You know he was my -- going months ago but he is now the president.

Will be the president of Purdue university in Indiana.

He is not in the running.

Other people are saying why no rubio Scott Jensen from Wisconsin actually types and I want to -- rubio.

Steve pending issues.

Yes maybe but not the vetting issues that I think most people think -- I mean he went through this big race he won this senate race in 2010.

There were questions raised about credit the credit card that he used state party credit card.

There were suggestions that there was another shoe to drop on that I don't think that's never drive that -- it was never dropped I don't think that those -- the reasons.

He we've talked about this friend of his David Rivera representative from.

Miami.

Serving in congress has been investigated at the state level.

Reported to be investigated by the FBI and -- for some shady business dealings.

I'm very close to it to Marco Rubio and it would have been one of those things had rubio Ben -- and had he been.

Chosen he would have had to explain they would have had to explain in great life -- -- this this is speculation on my part not reporting this guy -- Yet with all that was reportedly -- now I'm jumping to speculate.

I would guess that that perhaps the Romney people didn't.

Want to to get into that because otherwise I mean Marco Rubio is.

You know I imagine he was -- the obvious choice and not because he's Hispanic necessarily not because he's from Florida but just because you are really really good idea.

Customers here I -- rubio is also looking head of this election onto his Sonia and there are a lot of folks who surround -- who are pushing him to instead wait until you -- to run into a sixteen if Romney doesn't beat Obama or.

After that he does so keep in mind there's some played there as well the.

Republicans in New Jersey are sending Chris Christie is going to do delivered the keynote address at the convention which is on Tuesday that is not the slot for the VP.

Christie pushed back today saying the RNC will do the announcing -- who's speaking when.

And the Romney campaign will say who wants to be -- VP he added that line as well.

In the response but.

We're told.

I Christie's.

It's probably not.

-- Folks for VP yet but will likely deliver the keynote.

So there we are we have come to the end of -- half hour did you want to make one more I'd -- to go back and.

Thank you all for watching this special report on line and -- -- -- try to get to do any questions tonight.
