Five -- -- Riley thanks for watching us tonight another sad day in America and that is a subject of this evening's talking points memo.

Bad things happen to good people.

All the time.

Nobody knows why it just the way life it is once again we have mass murder in America and the -- a young man who simply.

Out of his mind it's nobody's fault is no policy deficit it's -- Austin atrocity.

That's impossible to explain.

This is the fifth time in thirteen years -- American is committed mass murder.

-- -- Colorado April 20 199913.

Dead 26 wounded.

After two student shot them that Eric house and Dylan Klebold and committed suicide.

April 16 2007.

A deranged man on the Virginia Tech campus kills 33 people including himself no motive for the homicides.

-- fifth 2000 non.

Army major Nadal Hasan kills thirteen Americans at Fort Hood Texas he's currently charged with premeditated murder his trial will begin next year.

And finally in January 8 201122.

Year old Jared Loughner kills six wounds thirteen in Tucson Arizona.

Including congressman got real give.

Laughter it's currently in a Missouri prison awaiting trial on 49 felony counts.

And now we have 24 year old James Holmes from San Diego who allegedly killed twelve people wounding 59.

Others in -- Colorado movie theater.

Crime to place in a war of suburban -- replace try actually lived for two years Rory is a middle class neighborhood.

Just regular folks Colorado authorities are holding homes and there's no question he did it.

So once again we have a crazy guy causing a massive amount of pain and destruction.

There's little else to set.

Fox News correspondent Jon Scott has the time line.

A little after midnight local time the wildly anticipated.

Premiere of -- man the Dark Knight rises begins.

All of a sudden I looked to my right and there's this guy -- was coming through this exit door to my right.

And he looked like he was an -- -- something you know like usually come from.

About twenty minutes later the -- stands at the front of the theater wearing body armor and a gas mask.

He is armed to the teeth with an assault rifle shotgun and at least one Glock pistol.

First he sets off to devices which released some sort of irritant or smoke in the air then he opens fire.

But it just didn't I didn't have -- and I -- currently.

And pray.

For up to twenty minutes the shooter fires into the sold out theater.

There was this one guy who is -- on all fours crawling.

-- there is this girls -- spitting up blood there were bullet holes in some people's backs on people's arms and.

Being that affects me most this is seeing that young -- displaying their side right.

She's the little kids go you have.

They have it.

Make it's it's not a right and.

1239.

Local time calls start coming in to police.

We're gonna go get innovative -- yeah okay there.

It is -- you know we're -- -- mass casualty situation at this time.

Within two minutes police fled the scene.

People covered in blood begins streaming now the first thing we see is -- thirteen fourteen year old girl with a bullet when an early.

And your stomach can probably your chest and I think she was.

Great about two minutes later police arrest 24 year old James Holmes in the back of the theater.

And once the sun comes up the rest of the country begins to learn of the horror President Obama saying the government will do whatever is necessary to bring the shooter to justice.

We're gonna stand by our neighbors and Colorado.

During this extraordinarily difficult time back in Colorado -- see the motive is unclear and they are not looking for any other suspects.

We are confident.

That he acted alone.

However we will do a thorough investigation to be absolutely sure that that is the case.

And joining us now from the scene of the crime on the phone is -- Scott so you're you're Colorado -- can you provide some respect force.

You know bill O I -- struck me as I come out here and it took crystal blue sky advocated a light breeze blowing it's warm it's everybody it's what everybody comes to Colorado for the fantastic weather the -- scenery and the lifestyle.

Friendly people here.

And yet another one of these tragedy that happened just like it happened thirteen years ago a column by.

Now is there a -- -- in Colorado.

That is casual about firearms because you know that's gonna come off.

But I -- very in the late 1970s.

Everybody was out the wars -- there's obviously a western tradition where everybody.

And has access to guns in this guy bought his guns legally -- understand.

But it but -- people.

They respect firearms there but it is difficult to get them.

It is not difficult to get that I think there there are respectively LP kind of respect for firearms here right when I lived here in my early twenties that are right for after tobacco -- pick -- the mood.

You know go up in the mountains and -- with a 22.

Quite common -- They -- this just seems to be the case of an individual.

Jobs actually have to.

Now I don't know whether you can answer this question but I haven't heard an address so I wanna ask -- how do you get that kind of armament in a theater.

I guess he had a backpack or something but the guy's got full regalia he's got three weapons -- -- better.

Substantial law are all right who's got tear gas canisters how do you get that into -- Yeah I think I can view it on that you see he bought a ticket came man dressed as civilians trapped in the very front -- And then sometime after either the previous starter or the film itself started he -- chairwoman of fire escape aggregates it's actually.

Located at the front of the theater behind the movie screen.

So that he went -- to his car dressed up and volunteer and after 1520 minutes came back in carry all that stuff -- must -- jammed open the door or you to pieces paid.

To make it good to be open and again I talk to you witnesses who were in the third row who -- -- -- -- -- the door open and light streaming in from the parking lot and a guy standing there weren't a map.

They thought he would -- All right so that makes sense so the guy comes in he -- sit out he then goes outside he diggers the dollar somewhat so -- can get back in.

He arms himself and dresses himself in his car.

Now the apprehension.

In usually cases like this and we believe to kill themselves of the cops gunned him down they captured this guy -- you know how it they did that.

-- do not absolutely although the witnesses that I was talking to assert that at one point he's gotten seemed to -- -- although he had.

Had a number of weapons on him.

Maybe is -- -- who for whatever reason.

Something jammed and he just shut the government down and -- -- away to the back end of this theater.

And seemed to just sit there and wait now.

There are also report.

That he had taken some comedy.

-- prescription medicine.

A couple of hours before the attack whether that had anything to do -- -- whether that can be confirmed I do not know.

All right then did the police go to his apartment now Aurora.

Is a place with massive amounts of apartments I mean landed in one -- -- false.

And people come to Colorado.

From all over the west because you can make money in Denver there -- jobs in Denver and then they get apartments that's what this guy did he came from California he -- money it.

But the apartment I understand what he had booby trapped because he wanted to kill more people who go investigate him after the fact is that true.

That's the case seems to be indicated may have been I wonder whether he wanted to kill some of his neighbors because it neighbors say that around midnight which is must've been about the time he left.

Do not come to the theater which is just a short distance away.

They heard a loud -- No music.

Repeating over and over again new apartment and they went up and banged on the door they lived downstairs really banged on the door to try to get him to stop what they've taken that if they had opened that door -- -- what may have happened.

About -- obviously he was bent on killing as many people as possible and as I said before don't have anything to a gun control don't have -- do with any thing other than.

This guy.

And again.

This -- -- didn't have anything in his past John I don't think to indicate any violence he had no record.

He was a placid guy by all the accounts although his mother said something very -- -- when she was confronted the San Diego.

She told the authorities according to reports she wasn't surprised that this happened we don't know any more than that though do we at this point.

Not at this point all indications are that he just -- they know my my high school teacher here -- -- -- something -- -- -- that I will always remember that.

The mind can get sick just like the body cannot pretend.

He must have been subject -- comfortable out there.

Then there's nothing any of us can do about it.

All right Jon Scott everybody in the native Colorado and actually John -- -- the ABC station out there -- I worked for the CBS station -- there.
