The act apparently of of a very deranged mind.

This is a safe city of the safe state in the safe country.

And that we need to recognize that we can't.

Allow.

People that are.

Operations of nature to take away the choice and freedoms that we enjoy.

But it -- segments that I ever since man walked the earth there has been violent behavior.

Part of the human condition there's nothing any of us can do about it however psychotic behavior can often be predicted.

Joining us now from Boston doctor Keith tableau a psychiatrist.

So what is -- headline of this story to you doctor.

The headline of this story bill is that all such episodes of seemingly.

Random senseless violence have roots that reach deeper than the moment deeper than the monstrosity.

They can be explained.

By psychopath -- -- often explained by psychopath -- be taking root and what's more.

That's psychopath -- -- -- as it starts to.

Manifest itself is almost always noticed by people who disregarded.

Who have denial about how severe a case could be unfolding in front of.

Okay so you say that it if you got your hands on the shooter.

And you put him into therapy you could figure out why he did what he did.

No doubt if I had time with mr.

Holmes and his family we could Trace the roots.

Of his emotional instability perhaps there early chapters in his life story.

But what's more than that.

I would be able to find as a reporter and psychiatrist.

People who had touched base with mr.

Holmes and who knew that something dark was unfolding after all here's a young person.

Who was pursuing.

Career as a healer want to be a neuroscientist.

Was able to complete assignments to make out an application to be accepted to the University of Colorado to be a Ph.D.

candidate.

Something went wrong and people -- They just didn't take it I believe they just didn't take the signs and symptoms seriously enough well I don't know who wants to believe it could be happen.

I don't know if that's quite fair but -- let me let me get to my point here if the ABC news report is accurate and his mother toll authorities you have the right man as soon as she was contacted.

Then the mother knew there was something wrong with her sought -- -- we start there.

But -- perhaps in our society you can't do anything about it.

You can talk about it you can say it is somebody I think.

That personal where there is dangerous but there's no court -- -- -- land.

There isn't any of psychiatry is you can't do anything about it you have somebody sit in your office and you think that person's dangerous you -- detain them.

They.

Can that's not as a -- so.

Okay got wolf first -- first of all we've we've got to explore why was this young man withdrawn or released from his studies.

Was evaluated by a student health service did he getting -- -- can't afford just to do that no idea why it's not really there could leave now.

Yet but he but the question is what was known what kinds of dancers did he give our let's assume Osama is no I don't -- listen if someone's in my office yeah playwright absorbed in my office they says.

I say don't listen you tell me that you haven't feelings of people.

Don't mean you well would you ever take action against those people.

Yes he says I say okay well hold on a second and I got out of my secretary's office -- -- call 911 I'll make -- one of these forms and we'll have this person committed.

Okay you know how -- -- you know how long that's -- they're not gonna commit that person if the person as a lawyer the lawyer comment and a personal be out on the street.

You can't not necessarily very.

There we have not necessarily.

Be an historic we -- we -- situation like that here in New York this week.

Where -- -- stabbed the woman to death an -- guy's got a rap sheet all pop quiz that was odd that he was crazy he was on medication.

The Doggett psychiatry -- said luck this guy's got to take the I didn't take it boom the woman's dad.

They're not gonna detain in a big city like Boston -- Or New York or Denver or San Diego you know that they're not gonna -- you know you've got no cause to detain.

-- bill it's absolutely a fractured mental health care system I agree with that.

But that's why we have to put out the word to clinicians and family members who need jobs to do what could the -- there are.

I've listened you should hear me on the -- at times with -- are saying.

If you'd like to do that release my patients -- -- -- young and -- -- your letter it says the your wholly responsible for that and I'm gonna how old line.

The responses -- tennis and good for you by the way people that immediate apparel again that wasn't and it'll have to go out to others.

-- good for you to do that because you're and I know lab -- for a lot of years he indeed does.

But most don't.

Because they don't want to be sued.

The guy can come back -- There's lawyers all over the place look at the child abuse they don't abuses are there going to take the kids out about houses people and accused or hurt half the time and -- right back as a lawyer -- -- there saying you can't do this.

That's -- -- in San Diego if she said dad and I believe she probably did all right.

She could not have stopped her son.

From going anywhere or doing any thing she could screamed -- run around.

Necessarily -- to -- it.

And honestly true listen I don't know if this this man homes fell victim and victim quote unquote.

To drug abuse do you know that families can petition courts in almost every state for enforced.

Drug abuse treatment in a prison environment if necessary prison hospital -- -- -- bottom line is people don't use this stuff as much as they can because they don't wanna get involved they don't think it's -- The and that's true people it's not but what do you Z it is not.

-- no it's not yet he's he's plus the streets and this guy Carl -- -- -- -- on here here frankly doctor.

By this this guy by all accounts right now.

-- day one we might learn more.

Clean.

He's clean he graduates of top in this class university California Riverside Brady gets accepted the Ph.D.

program -- university cholera.

The guys score and really well on it on his -- school work.

He doesn't have any history of drug abuse he doesn't have any involvement a criminal system is no way you get this guy off the street -- -- -- -- -- -- When all is known in all it would take is about 45 minutes with his parents -- of his teachers and threes and three of his friends.

There will be a story that makes sense to -- why.

Of why this happened will be manifest and the time line with all the concerning moments will be seen.

And it at that point it will be clear that people could have done more at various points and they either didn't know how.

Or they didn't want to take the chance.

-- they didn't believe because of denial this gorge that that plagues this.

-- thought their horrible hey it happens or they were off and they were re afraid.

All right afraid of the person here can't paralyze this I'm not gonna get in -- not not now but you've got to take that -- into account because if you're dealing with does psychotic -- -- psychotic knows you're trying to get off the street -- -- -- -- -- -- And the second thing is are a lot of and we usually in the -- in a mental health area is simply not gonna do it mr.

-- gets sued.

And that's where we are in America today but in this case from what we know now I don't think anybody could have done anything about.
