Shannon the police department insists that Holmes acted alone.
Joining us now for one of his first interview since -- shootings.
Aurora police chief Dan notes that -- folks it's John Scott coming to you from outside the theater.
There was word overnight some confusion -- -- that there might be a second person involved a second suspect.
Can you clear that up for us.
Sure I'd like to correct something.
Rather -- insist that he -- -- acted -- we have no information that he -- with anyone else at this time.
That it was a report overnight about a person.
Who has was an acquaintance of mr.
We've since contacted that person we're trying to contact every person who was acquaintance of mr.
Holmes defined as much about -- as we can.
So that's really all that was and I I think based on what I know I would describe your relationship is inconsequential -- But we did speak to that person last night and it's part of -- that massive investigation will.
In the days and weeks ahead we hope to speak everybody -- -- -- mr.
homes weren't as much about him is possible.
I know there's much investigating to do but to this point can you tell us why do you think this happened.
All I can.
Begin to explain this site I can't explain any these shootings.
Is the suspect being cooperative.
Let's put it this way whatever he might be telling us or or has told this is not something for public discussion.
But he is represented by an attorney he is not speaking to us this time.
There are reports that he is -- the AR fifteen that he was firing in the theater that it jammed in that and in some ways other people are alive because of that can you confirm that.
I can't I have not been briefed on any of the frenzy -- I'm not sure the forensics have been done.
I do know that the large caliber they beat them underground magazine was was off lying on the floor at the scene I do know that bit.
Whether it was at -- or not I simply have no -- I don't know right now.
There was one report I have also not seeing confirmed that I wanted to clear it up with -- -- there was a report that he told your officers that he had taken Ambien.
Or some kind of prescriptive drug prescription drug before the shootings can you comment.
Now why I've made it clear to the media and and I hate to disappoint you folks but any admissions that he is made to us.
That that'll be presented in the court process it's not for discussion at this time.
And again our highest priorities that he be convicted of these horrible crimes.
And and that's our agenda so we'll prepare this material we'll reveal -- at the appropriate time in criminal discovery.
Working toward a conviction you must have an awful lot of new evidence given the fact that you were able to get into that apartment.
And the evidence wasn't destroyed by the fire that apparently was intended.
Right and that was that was it extremely high priority over the last two days.
We wanted the evidence and that's inside that apartment we've taken custody of computer.
The potential that we might get evidence that I -- computer is well it's very important to us.
But -- every ounce of evidence will just help us hold this person accountable so.
It was a very very high priority that we uncover evidence and I'm so grateful that.
We had the bomb professionals from the feds and our local agencies to help us do that.
It was a great relief.
Both from the hasn't standpoint that we mitigate that hazard and also that -- recovered that evidence I suspect will be sifting through that evidence for months.
Do you know anything about the time line was it possible that.
There was an intent that the apartment explode first.
The law of the land the loud music would would -- in the neighbors the apartment would explode your officers would go there and then the theater we -- -- there's all kinds of speculation by that but I simply don't know enough about the details and time lines.
That of anything right now so.
I I I I really really don't know that's part of what -- trying to figure out the days ahead.
What's the biggest challenge for your department now.
I think -- Really where we're pretty taxed.
We've got a lot to did today it's prayer vigil is terribly important to the community.
We've got challenges of logistics around that were honored to have the president here we -- -- to be here the victims need to spend time with him but that also present some some challenges for us.
So today's a really important day I sent an email to the organization this morning saying.
Basically hang in there you're doing a great job -- and death.
Were all so proud of of all the employees in this department.
And we're so thankful and proud of our colleagues and law enforcement.
In the area because we couldn't have done what we've done and what we need to do without their help.
We have heard Ohio praise for your department in the in the job that has been done to this point.
You feel that you can assure the citizens of -- -- that there isn't some second suspect out there.
Yes I'm very confident of that.
I don't think there's any second suspect out there.
I mean obviously we'll continue to investigate this entire matter -- work very hard to understand.
Well mister Holmes is contacts in the acquaintances but that's largely to learn more about his thinking his behavior.
Not that we think that there is a suspect in particular that helped the business.
It's a perverse enough crime for one for one person -- formulated.
It's it's I don't think it's really conceivable right now that there's a second person was in on this.
On this on this thing that -- -- The timeline that you have laid out suggests that there was roughly.
Four months of planning at least four months of planning that went into this.
Do you think that it goes back farther than that is there any indication you've had from new evidence that it goes back farther.
Well I mean I'll go back to what I know.
What I've revealed that he started receiving shipments of all that stuff around four months ago.
We don't know now and if we knew we wouldn't really shared with the media what else he was doing prior to that.
But I think as I said yesterday that I think that four months of this -- of activity accumulating this material.
In the manner in which she did amounts to some pretty serious calculation of the liberation.
On his part so.
The investigation continues this is an area where the feds can really help us the FBI's been great.
Because the extent he's reaching out across the nation to gather this material.
Our federal colleagues we'll we'll track -- that down for us and they're exceptionally good actress that.
I know that a big part of investigating any crime is following the money there are reports that he may have spent 8000 maybe 151000.
Dollars assembling the weaponry in the potential explosives.
What do you know about where that money came from.
I don't personally know anything about that right now by investigators -- sure are working on that.
And hopefully we'll get some answers you know -- this thing is so big so complex.
It will take time and I'm sure we'll get to the bottom of those kinds of questions.
Let me give you one last option opportunity to -- Some words to citizens of your community and and -- your office.
Well you know this is a great community and it's really rallying I think this prayer vigil tonight this memorial service is will be a really important moment.
I I drove by the theatre yesterday justice -- -- my cops were guarding it.
And the spontaneous outpouring around the theater I'm sure you've got some images of it.
The the big poster everyone signing.
It's really powerful stuff this community is grieving I just -- this morning listening to thirty voicemails on my phone.
Many of them from citizens.
The community is grieving I think the communities proud of the way it's responding to this.
Obviously my cops and in my civilian employees they've done an incredible job we couldn't be more proud of them.
You know we we traded we traded we traded for active shooter situations it's -- legacy of Columbine and other incidents and as a police chief I never thought in my mind that I would really be coping with that -- my cops would and they did the other night.
And they did an incredible job.
She's -- notes the Aurora police chief.
It's been a tough tough couple of days -- I know that thank you for joining us today.
Thank you thank you for -- up there.
