Knowingly.

Twisting my words around it's just that I don't value small battles.

People who have spent their entire livelihood working working and government.

They sometimes don't appreciate.

Just how hard it is to start a business.

Grow a business maintain a business so that you can maintain employees.

And pay them better wages and better benefits.

New war of words opening up in the 20:12 campaign over the central issue of that campaign talking about the economy stupid.

I mean -- at home but it didn't generally speaking welcome power play I -- -- -- filling in for the inevitable chris' -- halted.

Talking to you via something I just learned about is called the an amazing thing it apparently invented by Al -- -- you you know about this if you're watching here but I just learning about it I'll do my best to work with it.

Our guest today -- Charlie -- of The Washington Times -- radio talk show hosts in Garland Nixon of WP FW radio here in Washington DC which you can get via the worldwide it's or whatever I could -- and if you -- not -- shouldn't talk radio it's got fantastic jazz program we've got the -- doesn't lose my favorite is that Tom Cole show called G strings.

Which is not about Phoenix's yeah this is this event G strings and -- these strings and and jazz guitarist a great great show us what's the number on 889 point three -- Tesla PFW dads who is back to how loves us.

That's about the topic for the million power anyway.

Talking about the that the twisting of words and -- -- twisting whose words.

Yeah in regard to the campaign of various distractions and issues over the next -- is what we're talking about right now.

Let's let's talk about the origin of this latest fracas about that it was president was speaking.

In regards this and and according to the Romney at a key sentence was left for.

Actually -- he's speaking Gannon road and Roanoke Virginia campaign event.

And I would actually argue that this is what will turn into probably one of the most significant.

I would say was aghast by the president the president clearly is really really regrets having said it.

And he's put out several -- so far.

Making appointed -- is trying to say well you know he's taking words out of context and and and he's saying that I didn't say united I don't.

Not value -- small businesses.

But they also include the -- In which he does say the exact words that the Mitt Romney campaigns now obviously the Mitt Romney campaign is.

Is making more of it in the studio -- campaign to contend every President Obama intended week when he set.

But I do think it's gonna be very happy to be very.

Very difficult for the president to get out from under that.

Thought well I you know I think in a way kind of looks like a sign of desperation for Mitt Romney to me and a citywide position if you've got a handful of -- you don't have defeat like you have bases and I think he's speaking I think he knows that what he -- -- say as to is taking.

The presidents -- statement out of context and he's trying to make that work.

Even though it's not real so I think it's kind of a desperate move if he has an -- he should -- -- -- he should he should.

Police something that the president say that really -- the president as opposed to you know cutting and pasting until we get something that works.

How politics goes especially in this town you if you say something in your opponent says he didn't mean to speak the truth.

He didn't he say what you're really what it really makes sense.

You did you do attack in India both sides jump on it.

And I think there's -- -- -- but but how -- that did that President Obama didn't say.

And he did say.

If you started a small business -- you know you didn't do that -- let's take it I think I -- You're here go the full context of what he said well I'll read here there -- a great teacher somewhere in your life he went on to say.

Someone helped to create this unbelievable American system that helps you to drive.

Somebody interest in somebody or rather invested in roads and bridges if you got a business you didn't build that somebody else made it happen.

The Internet didn't get invented on -- -- Part of what the president's.

Did and so ultimately what Mitt Romney did with the cut and paste job you know it's like if I -- I don't want to you know bullet New York City any city said.

He said book New York City and leaves out the part this is I don't want -- -- so I think he cut pasted and I don't think you do that if you've got a good strong hand to play.

But but it's not like you.

Reversed that you wait your example right there is that you're due taking -- -- to actually change the meeting was what he said.

But I do think it did it is true that President Obama that President Obama comes to a from the perspective.

The secret ingredient to the economy is.

What ever -- -- all the help that gets he gets it done for business -- I think Mitt Romney's perspective is the secret.

And -- to the economy is.

An entrepreneur who wants to risk everything and and make and get rewards and and and and and work hard.

And I think that's us that that that's an accurate.

Depiction of the two sides and that's an and and that's what I think this.

That's not put it doesn't in the age of the worldwide -- In other things like that -- Twitter and some would say critics -- -- the generally dumbing down of American society I would say is sort of the into the -- the -- -- American site to keep things that tight and concise concluded that I think it's very very easy to take things out of context here -- to pull that one snippet that.

Did that sounds incendiary on his face but when taken in context is not nearly as incendiary -- -- because ultimately all of the president is saying is this.

If you lived in Somalia this business probably wouldn't be successful as it is here and I think we can all agree that that's that that's a true statement and.

Sure absolutely but whatever the trying to think of good example where.

President it was -- both campaigns -- Do you go all campaigns do that's where -- where where were they and and of course in this current world it does magnify and I think if that.

You know whether it's fair or not -- it is going to be because of the sort of -- rising of everything including campaigns.

-- I do think it's going to be something that's gonna resonate throughout.

The rest of the election and I think -- -- and I also think that President Obama is very worried about it and that's -- we.

Seeing these ads -- going so directly.

Well certainly the Obama campaign defends its record on small business they've they've put out a new you have bad let's take a look at what there's.

The first time the Romney campaign -- -- the president's words and it won't be the last.

But every time they do this we need to call them out here's what's important.

President Obama has consistently fought for small businesses and -- to -- the president knows hardworking people turning ideas into successful businesses built the American middle class.

And conversely as you would expect the Republican National Committee has put out its own ad which says that these are not -- here's a look at their -- Not -- and they show counts.

This has been paid work helps.

Sometimes people forget the magnitude of sometimes -- -- Private sector's doing -- Any reaction.

Well you know -- my thoughts are on this -- it this is this is it's important in that it tells us what this campaign is really about it is it about substance or is it about -- shall we say because I think these kind of discussions are kind of fluff because they're not.

Really deeply substantive.

So is this about rhetoric or is it really going to be about substantive issues to the American people.

Well it's definitely going to be about the economy that's for sure her and that and that's what you know we're seeing all around us and -- -- The bottom line is we won't because it does everything you that's we're -- from the Obama campaign.

You know if you're explaining you're losing if you're defending you're losing and the fact that they're putting so much effort into trying to undo this and trying sort of combat this makes me think that and they are very various market you know when it comes campaign I don't know anybody -- smarter than them.

They realize it's a problem and that's why -- fighting so hard to -- to undo it.

I have to agree with and you don't play in that it is from this but you when you campaigning you don't ever want to be on the defense you always look the other got back on this you'll say they got to find a way to turn it and go back after -- round I agree with that I'm surprised to hear you guys agreed.

But let's make that recently it.

That was its -- to be taken out of context yeah.

I will be right back with a look at Syria now that this into American.

Politics right after this.

Also working for -- transition Saudi Syrian people can have a better future for you -- submerging.

Given the -- stockpiles of chemical weapons.

We will continue to make it cleared Assad and those around him of the world is watching and that they will be held accountable by the international community.

And the United States should they make the tragic mistake of using those weapons.

They will be held accountable by the international community what does that mean critics of the Obama administration would would say it's more idle talk that the international community.

And of course any number.

International crises has done virtually nothing under the auspices of the United Nations Charlie -- what's your take.

Well I think that.

You know we're gonna hear a lot of attacks against the Obama administration about either doing is you know what they're saying or what they're not saying -- -- doing or they're not doing.

One thing is clear I don't think there's any appetite except maybe with John McCain.

For actually doing anything about Syria.

Even as serious.

As good as this is didn't you desperately serious is it is especially -- -- with the prospect of chemical weapons and things like that.

I think the best argument that Mitt Romney can -- honestly make although I'm sure you'll make the entire argument.

The best argument the most honest argument he can make is that you know when President Obama ran -- 2008.

He made a lot of promises about.

About his state as to how he will deal with these local affairs.

And and it's a lot of it is not come to fruition and it's and I think that.

He could be you could delay those promises he made in 2008.

Against today and CEO -- make an argument for a lot of disappointment.

I think anything beyond that such as you know wolf you know you're not doing enough -- Syria would be somewhat decent -- because nobody wants to get involved I don't think.

I.

The issue here part of the main issue here is the issue for the chemical weapons I think part of the what the president was saying in part of the -- -- the message that has to be sent to.

It is to the leader of Syria is that.

There may not be intervention now but in the event that you start.

Tossing around chemical weapons of every one becomes endangered because once they come out anybody -- use and the other part is I think.

Part of the message is.

That it's important to form an alliance with the the rebels now so that after.

Ideally you need the regime falls they won't have to be there will be no need for military action to secure the weapons that you can have an alliance with the people who are the new people who are -- -- President Obama's -- case repeatedly that Americans are tired of war after ten years of fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq.

It appears.

The president -- -- is on the verge of collapse we don't know when that's gonna happen whether it's next week next month or perhaps several months down the road.

It appears more and more likely that it's going to happen why should the United States intervene if Assad tumbles.

-- -- Well I mean the big the big I think the biggest issue is are you are these stockpiles of weapons and the fact that you're you're dealing with part of the country where.

Terrorists can get their hands on them.

And and do you lord knows what wisdom.

And so it.

It becomes a very as it becomes -- very terrifying prospect.

But as you point out I mean if you have what we've got a lot of problems this country right now our economy is in tank.

And and we've been through a lot of war and I think a lot of people are exhausted out of it and there's going to be a very little political will.

For anybody doing some.

Is President Obama right to stay out of this friend.

Because -- might tumble on zone.

I think so I think at this point at me because as as as was mentioned here did the the the American people don't have a don't have much of -- stomach for war and you know how it is you stick your toes in that miss it.

Your whole body might fall -- so I think the we will be staying back I would say this that as long as we're discussing the there's always were discussing.

The president's record on on and you know if in the Middle East and his his record on on the military actions in the Middle East I think he's in good shape because he's had a lot of success that I think it's gonna benefit him as opposed to Mitt Romney who also has an issue with the lack of experience.

And in world affairs.

You mentioned in this position of the chemical weapons and -- in the risk of the threat that poses not only.

To the United States but to with the world community certainly.

No one is more threatened by that and Israel and prime mister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke out on that issue just at least let's listen up.

Those are sort of control look I think I think the regime.

We'll go.

Discretion I don't know -- days or weeks or months but I don't think of sustainable.

And I think -- go I'm I'm less concerned with what replacing -- -- I am more concerned with the -- line.

What could happen to those stocks of chemical weapons.

And those of deadly rockets and missiles.

When there is no government conservative that's my principal concern.

Do they.

Missiles do those of us thought all the chemical weapons get in advance of of the terrorist organizations like Hezbollah.

I don't know how they would then you Syria and Israel -- -- border together.

And then you've got you Lebanon.

Nearby where there and didn't do this.

-- transit between Syria and Lebanon are that you know it's it's pretty fluid.

And you know every day.

Israel.

You know deals with -- with.

Rocket fire and things like that from from places like Lebanon and it could absolutely.

Become a an existential threat.

To them very quickly.

Some you know in this instance in heaven knows I have been critical of some of Israel's policies -- my -- you don't military policies but I will say this in this instance I think they do have a very valid concern.

About them about the chemical weapons and it and the threat that they pose a falling into the wrong hands of people who would use to immediately use them against Israel however.

I think Israel can't beat it country.

That intervenes I think it has to be more -- other countries in -- intervening because if if if if if Israel directly intervenes there people that uses that.

As you know that he didn't.

You know as a reason to to use -- weapons if they get I think -- got to keep drastically.

This the situation raises the broader question of of the W no.

We know aside we know what he stands for but we don't know.

Whoever might replace it -- -- -- thing.

I've not heard -- seen parts of that interview we didn't I had not heard that part where he said today he's more -- he's less concerned about what follows.

Aside and then the fact that dishonest and it is going to fall I thought that was very extreme because they you know that is.

And -- I -- here there's no there it.

Is -- an actual piece there.

But he noted that the Syrian border has been fairly quiet for a number -- for a long time and this is kind of -- good if you're seeing that that that that's not.

Greater concern to to Netanyahu.

We've -- we see this uncertainty in the past year with these the Arab -- we -- in Egypt we don't know.

How the situation is -- -- -- we still don't know how Iraq is gonna fall and even as the president spoke to the veterans of foreign wars convention.

The other day.

Touting it to the return of American troops.

The same very time he was doing that we saw the most deadly day of violence this year in Iraq.

That Libya still remains an uncertain situation -- to -- reaction.

What I think 81 of the issues you know we certainly have to be concerned with what we would like to happen and what we feel benefits us in the short term but we also have to keep in mind that people of these countries do have a right.

To decide their own destiny so we have to -- interest of what we may think in the short term is best for us vs people in the long run at being able to decide their own destiny and ultimately I believe that -- that that countries are inherently more stable.

When the people there decide the political destiny as opposed to outsiders coming -- And then when they I would absolutely agree with -- -- -- -- -- you know -- -- you look back over the past 203040.

Years of involvement.

Definitely it's it's been -- fairly big disaster and and you we've been sort of all over the map.

And -- I don't know what the answer is 222.

Fixing that but we don't have a real good track record was there.

-- one of the great advantages of the worldwide either -- Is the fact you could buy stuff by a lot of junk on it and pay no taxes is that.

About to change representative Paul -- New York State is gonna join us.

On that subject when we come back with more of -- And the realistic effect of this situation is bad for our traditional retailers.

Bad for cities counties and states -- Levy sales taxes.

And bad for consumers.

Who are unwittingly exposed to potentially incriminating.

Audit issues.

A house committee right now as we speak is considering a bill that would tax.

Purchases.

On the Internet this is huge concern.

Obviously a lot of state governments local governments federal governments aren't badly in need of cash is -- certain.

But certainly when we have -- raising cash through Internet taxes but it could also be huge destructive component to an entity which has been -- this so called.

Worldwide and it.

I'm -- stuff that I don't look it's come a reason and anyway.

Representative -- -- -- from New York of the 21 district of New York have an area which is near and dear to my heart because congressman I want to -- more -- user took it.

How -- you won't tell you that's great I did lovely part of the country.

And it's a pleasure to have you here and I -- Chrysler or whatever and just beat him in any event right now what's your position on this and attacks.

Well you know it's -- Judiciary Committee reviews the marketplace equity act I'll watch with interest as to.

Points made at the at the hearing.

But I would recognize.

I'm the opposite outset that.

Our small business community is oftentimes turn into a show room.

That is and utilize for a number of sales and they're asked to operate on an -- level playing field.

And so I think the market place equity act is something that will draw a lot of attention.

To parity and fairness that's important out there for our small business community and many states and localities are strapped in these tough economic times.

And revenues that they could rightfully secure.

Will obviously be addressed that these hearings so we're -- -- could stay in close touch with our constituents and I hear what they have to say but I think it's it's a great thing that we're having a hearing on this measure.

It's my understanding that the tax would be levied in this case at the point of origin and where the product is is made or were stored or.

The words delivered from is that your understanding.

It is that is my understanding that it would be -- levied at the point.

Sale and currently you know the system where people are supposed to -- at the point of filing their annual income tax return.

It's probably.

A system that provides a lot of weakness -- -- her.

-- there's some fears that because this would be taxed to the point of fortune that it would raise the Specter of a double tax people being taxed not only.

Where the product is made or sold but also in their individual states where -- where they eventually purchased.

Yeah well you know -- that will be a point that's hammered down hammered away at at the hearings.

But again you know you're asking the small business community oftentimes the service to show room.

And they're operating on an -- level playing field and so I think there are ways to.

Deal with the -- deal with the scrutiny of fine tuning here and providing up a best outcome for every one.

-- -- -- -- -- on this prospect of an -- is certainly you know I agree with it and I and -- tell you I think number one I don't think it's any type an increase in tax because you're supposed to file your state taxes and you supposed to put this stuff on -- that you button that they Texas which of course nobody -- we already know them.

Let -- know.

Everybody's a scofflaws and myself on the Internet and a little I think what's important here is that when -- -- business a small businesses small store whatever hardware store you're employing people and you have numbers of people who are actually contribute to the economy as opposed to somebody's on my businesses who drop ship they don't have anybody -- -- Cindy Cindy the bill to some other company who shifts.

Who who should -- in the day and enlist people have a job it.

It underscores the the truth about taxes in this country and that is that everybody's okay with -- and they're not paying.

And -- root for that reason I feel pretty sure that.

That that.

-- Obama's decorate amber bring me bring you -- -- campaign and any Democrats face reelection.

I doubt they're gonna bring it up in the campaign either even though as you point out a lot of small business.

Owners.

Who could withstand if you don't have.

If some benefit from this they're just they're not it and Democrats circuit.

Texas Texas congressman taco what do you -- but I know that this bill has some Republican support.

Well I think that you know again it's an issue that speaks to the small business needs of our community -- the economic engine that drives the growth of the economy.

And I think it deserves a lot of thorough review so that we can go forward with the -- -- policy here to.

Allow our small business community and that retail sector to to grow in the.

I've exported out of the offset their congressman did.

Certainly a lot of local state governments federal gonna see this as it is bonus because they are deeply.

Indebted and I know you've been greatly concerned about the fiscal -- that the United States -- states now stands upon.

What are your thoughts about that.

Well you know I think that there is a lot of work being done on tax reform.

The president is calling for the middle out the growth coming from empowering the purchasing.

Opportunity for the middle class I think that.

Along with the a discussion on.

On the tax cuts that went toward -- the so called job creators that didn't produce -- 8838.

Record.

The growth of jobs in fact.

Witnessed eight point two million jobs lost so as we revisit tax policy I am certain.

That with -- hearing at the scrutiny being provided on the marketplace equity act today.

Will be able to fold in this discussion it's overall tax policy tax fairness and what.

Create the greatest inspiration for growth in our economy and empowers the middle class which will be the driver.

Of the economic comeback you need to have that aggregate demand you need to have that sort of consumption.

Formula that is driven by the middle class the empowerment of their purchasing ability.

That consumption is important to the growth of the economy our business community small and large medium size needs customers and there's a -- and provide for fundamental fairness.

First -- this is somewhat tangentially related to this but I have you been huge supporter of removing.

Subsidies for oil companies.

-- And tell me why you believe in that.

Well I think that by removing the subsidies from oil companies and providing for consumer behavior -- change.

That can come from support to renewables and various up efforts to.

Understand that energy efficiency should be our fuel of choice.

There are these are -- wants is that need to be brought about so that we can have.

A stronger domestic supply.

88 confidence built by.

You know a national energy agenda that empowers our businesses here as we produce America's supply and I think that's important and to -- to do what I think is to provide for the priming the pump if you will through the transfer of these subsidies over two what is cutting edge science and opportunity.

But what -- huge obstacle to that point of view is the fact that we see this revolution.

In.

And the extraction.

Of natural gas and oil through fracking.

It's dramatically lowered the price of natural gas from the lower the price of oil to some degree.

And it is provide.

Provided bountiful and cheap energy at a time when renewables just are not there economically.

Well you know they're not there because -- playing field has not been level.

But you know when we look at the opportunities for drilling either natural gas or or.

Oil we look at the -- -- if you will and you just see this this push to drill anywhere everywhere it's not.

Science it's not sound energy policy it's not targeted it's a slogan.

And you know it comes at a time when 75%.

Of available is what's being utilized right now -- and eighteen year high for oil.

Production here in the in the states.

The -- It also reflects I think tremendous.

Opportunity.

That provides for domestic supplies.

And and does it in a way that is science based targeted.

You have growth in in the gulf states if you will.

50% more rigs and he also have a reduction in the reliance on foreign imports.

That are down to 45%.

And here to court just during the bush share they were at 57%.

So there -- -- dynamics out there words we're we're utilizing supplies in a way that are causing soundness.

In the other production out there.

And basically what you have at least right now.

Is some 25 million acres of of available space that sits on eighteen billion barrels of supply.

They goes on taps so it's just drilling for the sake of drilling gets locating.

Not putting together a science.

Or strategic sort of approach.

And so we need to make certain that we're doing this with every bit of science and every bit of policy that is driven by soundness of facts and not just.

A thirst to respond to an industry a sector of the energy world.

That.

Produces a good feeling without really having a soundness.

Levity if you will in in the outcome.

Congressman -- we're gonna just about out of time I want to ask you one more question it has not sure -- was anything.

Other than my love of the -- over the -- you make it after the races this August -- and.

Actually I was up there this weekend because it's such a huge industry.

Where the state of new York and for the regional economy and Saratoga Springs is due to the district that I have hoped to represent.

And I'll tell you it just has a ripple effect into the regional economy you know in a very sound -- and you're very right it's a very tremendous town it's a sound.

Did have real estate that everyone enjoys visiting and the locals.

Very much -- proud to call it home.

Well you're -- misrepresent that area or where I am who I -- represented -- Thank you very much thank you very much for your time congressman and Charlie Garland was appreciate your time.

And -- -- good to see you and I will be back here again tomorrow be filling in for -- -- -- on power play.

We -- -- -- vacation and we appreciate you being with us.
