And -- governor on a weeklong trip to England Israel and Poland beginning with a stop in London for the Olympics and a meeting with the British prime minister.
But before leaving US soil mr.
-- Romney unleashed a scathing attack on president Obama's record on the economy and national security.
And foreign policy.
The president's policies have made it harder to recover from the deepest recession.
In seventy years.
Expose the military to cuts that no one can justify.
Our national security secrets.
And -- dealings with other nations.
He has given trust where it is not earned insult where it was not deserved and apology where it is not do.
Let's get a fair and balanced debate underway about those remarks Mary Katharine Ham is editor at large of -- dot com -- -- Fox News contributor.
One Williams a Fox News political analyst good morning to both -- you.
Mary Katherine -- a lot of some Republican pundits and so forth have been urging Mitt Romney to take a tougher tone in this campaign is this the start of it.
I think it's a pretty good start it's it points out I think from.
On foreign policy in particular needs to sort of stake a claim that's why he's going to this VFW event that's -- going overseas.
And I think -- approach he's taking a look where's he going -- going to Olympics he's going to Israelis going to Poland three areas where I think he can provide a contrast with Obama and feel safe going after him.
One of the Olympics obviously -- -- -- his experience -- in Israel where he can say look the president hasn't been here in fact he's traveled all over the Middle East.
Without even dropping by Israel he can have a nice conversation when Netanyahu which Obama.
Frequently does not have senate conversations -- them and Poland where -- can highlight missile defense I think he's it's a good strategic trip and it's hard to look undignified when your -- Abroad trip I think when -- meeting with leaders want it does raise an interesting point I mean a lot Israel is the strongest American ally in the Middle East and -- and the sitting president hasn't been there yet.
No I think that clearly -- -- a soft spot for our President Obama especially with Jewish voters.
-- bit you know a lot of people in fact there was a story this morning in I think the new York times of -- Sheldon Adelson the big donor now launching a campaign to try to draw Jewish voters away from President Obama.
But John I think the larger point here is that on foreign policy.
Despite the strong words that came from candidate Romney yesterday the American people are very comfortable with President Obama they clearly prefer him over -- when it comes to.
Foreign policy and national security by wide margins and I think that candidate Romney even as he goes overseas wrist.
Inviting lots of -- reminders about what President Bush's foreign policy was before we got President Obama.
-- -- -- -- The president Mitt Romney says has issued apology where it is not you do -- Let me play a sample of some of what he seems to be talking about -- we'll discuss it on the other side.
I do not view America as just one more place on the map one more power to be balanced.
I believe our country is the greatest force for good the world has ever known and better influences they did today as ever before.
Sadly the president has diminished American leadership.
Are reaping the consequences.
The world is dangerous destructive.
One you know that the president.
Pulled those missiles out of Poland and the Czech Republic that may be part of the reason Mitt Romney is going there.
-- there have been the damaged relations we talked about with Israel but but yes Osama bin Laden is dead on balance.
You said that voters are comfortable with the president and his foreign policies.
Obviously a guy like Mitt Romney hasn't been -- president doesn't you know hasn't hasn't had the opportunity.
To make decisions involving foreign policy is not part of the difference here.
Well I think it's the other part of the difference is that as you said -- -- -- bin Laden but also pulling the troops out of Iraq setting a timetable in Afghanistan.
Handling the Libyan situation without getting.
US troops -- about these are all positives for the Obama team.
When it comes to Romney's foreign policy experience -- you compare him to recent GOP nominees for the presidency John McCain.
Bob Dole others it you know it he has sparse experience.
Even now President Bush President Bush -- governor Texas was able to say -- to deal with Mexico Mitt Romney.
As governor of Massachusetts is only dealt with domestic policy so this is an effort to burnish his credentials the problem is.
It invites people like Joseph Biden as -- You know -- what is he have to say what with the specifics in the VFW speech about what he would do want foreign policy different -- President Obama but in.
Then again Mary -- -- it invites the comparison to what kind of foreign policy credentials did Barack Obama have for -- Well yeah that that is chair and certainly I think Americans do give him credit for the successes -- had a specialist on bin Laden and that's totally fair I think Mitt Romney it has spoken about that in the past.
But there is serious conversation to -- had about.
His the idea of American exceptional -- -- I think that appeals to a lot of voters -- the -- conversation to be had about allies like Poland and Israel who many feel like we're getting sold out to benefit other folks who are not as friendly to us.
And I think that the conversation that Mitt Romney can have in addition I think what's Smart and he did in the speech if he connected it to budget issues defense cuts in the economy and that's a place where he's strong I think can go that Obama quite.
Quite easily it's -- and I think that's a good tactical -- for its.
Going to be an interesting few days as Mitt Romney conflict continues that trip we'll keep watching and Mary Katharine Ham Juan Williams -- -- and thanks.
