Is Penn State's penalty is too harsh too lenient.

Or just right.

Bishop Jackson what do you think.

I think there are penalties -- adjust little light.

I think it's great that it's -- it I think the problem is that the initial.

Findings.

-- really.

Compared to one year of television revenues.

Is not that significant I thing about double that amount.

The media of immediate fees.

Would be appropriate the challenge really is that.

Here didn't penalize an institution.

An administration.

If you word.

And then the players themselves.

Somewhere you've got to find a balance and all of this kind of thing.

I think it was a great start I'd like to see just a little bit more cash up front.

That the institution loses but I was surprised honestly that they did that much.

In these beginning stages.

You know you actually.

And hear what some of the as a private network said.

But NCAA.

Natalie was actually to -- listen to the survivors network they said if you will argue that the program has been punished too harshly we disagree entirely.

But we learned from decades of similar scandals and churches is that agreements like this lack we'll follow up.

We -- all who care about kids remain vigilant over time attention shifts elsewhere officials start backsliding and promises to end up being violated.

It's crucial that parents and the public keep the heat on university.

This is something -- the Catholic Church has actually learned early on how to Catholic priest here.

Right now but Johnny I think it's a bit because you're from you know the education side of this -- -- -- to speak up to this because one of the things.

That is clear about the Catholic Church has learned.

Is that it's not an isolated incident it's usually isolated do you think Penn state university has learned that.

But I don't know if they have but I I think this penalty has sent sent -- real message I don't think anybody in the NCAA is sitting in some office somewhere thinking how can we let Penn State off easy.

-- -- but it's a totally unprecedented situation and they've given an unprecedented penalty now the question isn't whether the Penn State institutions gonna take ownership over but.

I think we have to be careful here because is that there's a thin line between justice and vengeance and this is a really complicated situation.

You know because -- it's -- -- shut the whole football program bound will you know a lot of the funding for other sports and other parts of the institution.

Comes from the football program a lot of the local economy is tied to the football program.

And so you know I think in this situation the best thing we can do is just recognize it's a really really bad situation and just just hope.

That this accomplishes what everyone.

And intends for it to accomplish but -- they just think we have to be careful about about putting a number or putting a penalty attached to something because.

You know this is unprecedented they.

They've done two higher degree than a lot of people thought they would know we'll see whether this has the.

Effects to intimidate other institutions but money is where it hurts and I think they're a lot of people.

That are wondering how they're gonna get through this year in this particular situation.

Yeah and -- bishop Jackson -- even used in the penalties aren't enough wouldn't it be.

Should they take further steps -- -- like the survivors network is talking about they're.

Very -- there's a culture that this develops and and is that cold -- -- changed through these penalties.

Isn't that something that has the address as well.

It really does you would wonder whether there are safeguards.

That would make sure that.

Reporting is done properly.

During the investigations we found out that there or.

Obvious cover ups just as they have been.

Within the religious institutions that have.

Had generational abuses.

I would like to see is part of it.

Some kind of reporting oversight.

That would make sure that the kids are protected.

As a former.

Athlete in collegiate.

Athletics and professional athletics just -- short period time.

Years and years ago Cohen and today's.

It would.

Behoove them.

To make sure that these young people who are being shaped by these experiences are watched over.

In those locker rooms I think is very important.

Absolutely absolutely in -- may be the NCAA should take a look at the entire.

College campuses across the nation deceit what's going on there as well let me just we -- more than -- of the coming in.

I already snow talked about just as I just I think the Catholic Church should be punished for the actions of individuals you should -- state.

The institution.

This is a criminal justice issue David Larson says they should.

I have punish -- -- is that they knew was going on the athletes are being punished unjustly buddy list.

I also think PSU's actions in hiring outside investigators and removing the statue of Joseph Paterno.

Kept the death penalty from being -- -- -- a lot of stuff.

-- -- comments from both of you.

-- -- That I think this is a defining moment when it comes to this particular issue and the time we're living out whether it's the Catholic Church whether -- universities.

And -- leaders all across the country need to stand up and say enough is enough we're gonna -- on the side of caution in these situations.

And let's live in a world where we don't have to worry about our kids and when that when the threat comes if something seems you -- dangerous people that act decisively and they've got to do it with empathy and unfortunately people haven't and that's why we're in this place.

And -- -- your your last -- -- kids knew who didn't say any thing.

Our coaches knew and didn't report their peers and the institution has suffered because a lack of oversight.

And as you alluded to it should be something that permeates the whole.

NCAA.

Athletic.

Environment in order to be -- We're thank you both for being here on a spirited debate John -- at liberty university and bishop Harry Jackson.

Out of Houston thank you so much for being here with us today.
