Ex Olympic athletes depend on something more than just training and talent on the that certainly it's been part of things is event.

And they have to stay.

Mentally.

-- take for instance beach volleyball players -- Jennings and misty may trainer they've been.

Playing together for years they've been so successful but before the games began.

They've decided they needed a little help a little psychological help what they described as sort of marriage counseling.

And the man who did that marriage counseling -- to say.

We'll see if told the -- it that way Michael Gervais the director of high performance psychology.

At the disk sports -- spine center and Los Angeles doctor debate next savvy -- that's.

Then -- great to be here with you think is so why I did misty may and Kerry need your help.

You know it's exciting to talk about human potential and they are dominant in what they do that the best in the world.

And when we reach a place where were consistently the vast.

One of the toughest things to do is winning after winning.

Now this is the third go -- beach and the first motivation is easy to win the first time you know what we can be very clear with what we're hungry about.

But this third opportunity things changed and -- they.

Kerry has children and and misty has you know it changed her lifestyle as well and so it was just a matter of fine tuning.

They're and getting them into -- lockstep and so they're completely sink and this was not marriage counseling.

That's that's a really -- this is very greedy high stakes.

Training.

You know let's look at the -- that yet let's talk a little bit about this for -- in pictures these ladies are incredible athletes he'd never lost an Olympic matches you mentioned they're going for their third gold medal.

-- that would also be historic but they talked about the fact that they said they needed to reconnect and that's -- to commit add that compares into marriage counseling one of them said listen I have two partners in life.

I have my partner on the -- courthouse my husband still what exactly did you do in this action can you give us an example to help them reconnect and be -- Sure that the mental side of the game it's it's it's difficult to develop because it's invisible.

And one of the things that we spent a lot of time doing in this is what's unique about sports psychology.

Is that we spend time to articulate very clearly what it is that they're working toward and how they want to do it.

So we take those two variables we get a very clear and then you know what ended up taking place.

If I knew -- -- something very special is when the two of them looked at each other.

And they just nodded and this is toward the end of our work and there was this very silent the powerful not nothing else need to be said they knew that they were completely linked.

Completely connected with the work that they wanted to do.

That's so fascinating we know they're going for gold we're going to be watching them very closely they're not your only clients doctor drew made Austin talked eating talking about -- I states NBA players in what is things that we we all I think all of us look at when we're watching the Olympic Games is the pressure.

That these athletes are under they had the entire world watching them just real quick can you give this a little free advice.

I -- how to handle pressure like that whether or not we're in the Olympics or otherwise.

Absolutely.

So pressure does a great quote if you think there's pressure you're right.

And so the first idea about pressures that we have to interpret the experiences being too intense too big for our capabilities.

And that's where pressure comes from so as a definition pressure is.

Feeling as though you need to move faster than unity than you normally do and being able to think faster.

So the way that we dissolve pressure is my first training hard diligent focus very intense training both physically and mentally.

The second is -- be able to trust that training.

And that really comes down to managing -- high performing mindset being very clear on what you speak and how you speak to yourself.

Because that is really what determines pressure I if you can get yourself into a place yet where it's very calm and very focused.

You perform well under pressure we all will.

I feel better -- actually -- -- -- -- -- you feel better than dynamite on a little pressure involved in this you can send the bill by the way direct action here and -- your privacy that's isn't free.

That you may -- have you at this day very fascinating to listen to some of that.

And that therapy the psychology behind -- staff as athletes we've been.

These -- side it.

These are exciting times and we're really excited to see what these outfits are gonna do and this is what is amazing about the Olympics -- Seattle NR AUS teams that's literary time thank you so much.

I think -- beach volleyball.
