Hey it's Wednesday that must mean we have to talk about why why would meet Wednesday I'm Tracy Byrnes of the Fox Business Network we gotta talk about lining you know what's really using -- talk about the web and the Internet is playing.
Into the whole -- world these days these days.
Wait Qassam marries -- right now the wind doctor had to get -- lined up to name.
Actually you know my daughter came up with that she.
We were sitting at the dinner table discussing line -- it was something about what winds go what foods and how you can appreciate the vendors -- -- or your kind of like a doctor prescribing.
Wine with food I said wow she's and we were putting together my website that -- she so wanted to just call -- like the wind up here.
And it's gone on and it's stuck how did you get into wine before we start talking about you know it started as a hobby I met judge Julia child and Robert Mondavi when I was working as a TV news anchor in San Francisco.
And they encourage me to come up to Napa Valley you -- about points in the start doing stories on my news broadcasts about life.
And so.
The wind world has it exploded because of the web passionate because -- a -- very easy to go on and look on -- review and but it does seem to -- there's also a downside to that isn't there well.
I think the downside is its cutting out the middleman -- that's benefiting the consumer because it's driving the prices down.
You know.
We become the Robert Parker's of the world we can select the winds we want.
Collect all the information that we want and now because of the new laws that have been approved by the Supreme Court in many states are adopting them you can get wind direct.
From the producer and you're talking about gentlemen this is a 2005 Supreme Court decision on that allows wineries to ship cross borders right.
Yeah those were two cases from Michigan -- New York there were combined the Supreme Court ruled in 2005.
States are still kind of sorting out what I kind of restrictions but there are numbers states now where you can just go on the Internet.
By directly from the producer cuts out the middleman of course reduces the price at.
At the same time now we've become a little bit Maher of Holden to.
Online reviews doubly sure you're not out they're tasting you just reading with somebody -- in whether or not they elected and then you make you basing your decision.
You know and I might put myself out of business but I'm discouraging people from strictly taking our word.
Why would you like.
And take every opportunity -- -- there -- a lot of free wine tastings in -- kinds of festivals.
And you know even if you spend nine dollars for a wine dinner that's less than buying profile bottler to -- at the store and you get to.
Try it out with some food and how they parent and things like that let's talk about the wine industry as a whole for second -- It's changed dramatically absolutely what's the biggest challenge you -- facing these days -- internally.
From the spirits and liquor industry.
Unless they are singing wind songs are coming out with flavored -- flavored -- because they're talking about how.
Severe -- -- with food just like they talk about what line.
So -- SC I was at the underlying fair.
And they were having a competition between the mix colleges they don't call themselves park and then they don't -- -- you -- And they were showing how wind can just be another component of a cocktail.
And how it also goes with various types of food so that's really changing and challenging the wine industry to step up their game that's interesting because I would have thought you said the fact that there's so many different vineyards.
Undiscovered vineyards these days or is it is -- enough well.
Think what it does for their consumers it's opened up the whole world to the consumer we're -- -- from all parts of the world and places we've never heard from right or even a Middle East.
I was at the -- -- -- -- they had wind from Macedonia.
And Israel has really coming on strong the wind maker of the year last year wasn't.
Woman winemaker from Israel -- so there's some great winds out there he's an even China China's coming out with their -- there's secretly working on it.
When he says Tina's first year we're going to see it because it's in the -- right now 2015 -- -- fifteen okay so.
There's our you know they're one of the biggest consumers are warned they are -- are right behind the biggest purchaser of wind from the United States if you're gonna -- absolutely okay so.
But to -- sometimes.
All -- it while it's fabulous it just makes it's so confusing.
Well not really if you -- -- discerning palate you can quickly decide what if you don't like what if you're learning and you palate is really really no novice.
That's even more find more wines to taste right.
You know I'm I'm just gonna give -- examples some of the things are -- these people are kind of bypassing France right now the board those are just outrageously expensive.
Italy which is the number two -- to the United States.
Great winds 2325.
Dollar ranger brought you some press the -- Winds from Tuscany right yes and so we've got -- -- -- reserve and the custom Leonel.
-- -- 2325.
Dollars respectively.
I've got here a warmer until cannot take.
That's 65 dollars to get a comparable Napa Valley -- double the price and that's office go above and right now let's move to California.
Some new line to become and I know you like these the -- bubbly above from my hair flips through Gallo I -- talked with the winemaker Jim wall.
They're doing a great job there are coming out with a new -- -- got to they have the sparkling and now they're coming out with a still wind goes for just about any kind of food you can go from.
The salad in the appetizers right on through the fish course and on two very heavier meat course and then even into deserved what.
And these are all about thirteen dollars a bottle and barefoot.
Obviously taking off -- has.
Why have the bubble -- Been doing so well -- -- -- -- the it seems to me like we've kind of come full circle circle with Scott go back -- sect is still high fruit flavor why is that well.
You've got a generation of young wine drinkers that grew up drinking sprite and orange -- and doctor pepper.
So you come out with fruit forward wines that are bubbly that tastes good they can be a little bit sweeter.
And these are going to appeal to the younger wine drinkers and that's who's dominating the market right now we had originally -- Internet.
-- transition from straight to for Sacco and you're not very obvious you know what what so.
Are people drinking wine younger than they weren't Kazaa I don't emerging -- college you know we didn't really win.
45 is now the biggest market now.
Three point one billion.
Bottles of wine were -- last year in the United States really that's according to the international language three point one billion bottles bottles.
And the wine institute says about 781.
Gallons of wine so if you.
Average it out for per adult resonating across all three -- -- -- new year so we're.
And even as the economy now we haven't gotten quite as bad as -- with people sleeping in the streets of -- -- their kids up for adoption but.
You don't think so we're not -- to get to that point either.
But people have dialed down their buying they're not buying break 4050 dollar bottles only a select you're doing that and -- that's the older generation and they're dying out.
But the younger people expect set and a but does the younger people are buying 101520.
Dollar follows -- -- and when you look at what's out there South Africa Argentina.
Chile Israel all of these are -- -- result coming out with some great lines in the ten to fifteen dollar twenty dollar range.
Fabulous winds at a great price have they done that on purpose because that's obviously with the consumers -- -- -- -- -- -- scale back production and me.
There's a reason a bottles fifty dollars.
Well you know what production has moved in the other direction now -- and -- Gallo.
Airport she's doubling her production this year because.
The -- got -- was flying off the -- so it's kind of going the other way in the lower priced wines it's moving very quickly and some newer people are coming into the game -- from small.
Wine producing regions there is.
Cooperative in -- to Italy that I visited a few weeks ago called Vickiel.
-- dot com.
There are now offering their wines direct to the consumer from the cooperative.
About 25 producers -- some great wines -- -- guess what ten dollars a bottle.
Some critics say -- -- about the future of the wine business like industry.
I think what's great about it is said it's changing so much now that almost anything goes through choices are endless and their ways you can also if you're.
An avid wine collector.
There's a way that you can realize somewhat of a personal profit by buying some lines may be directly from the producer while they're still in the barrel.
Because when they come out.
Right when they come out a year or two.
Later they're gonna be more expensive but you've already purchased the wind you're receiving it.
-- a twenty to 30% discount in price before I let you go because you do have a block on the web how do you suggest people use the web properly to learn about wine.
I think.
If you just look at all the reviews that are out there.
And also if you look at all of the winds that are available.
Here if you can match up the two and go on pace yourself.
So -- the ones that you think you're going to light and block to a wine tasting -- -- your local merchant by a bomb went -- and on your own and then go back and seek additional information.
We just as you wind blog -- it's the way the wind doctor what's the exact.
Like the -- doctor dot Blogspot dot com and it's back up again.
Wait this was terrific to ministers flew we can count on tag.
Right -- the wind doctor check out his blog check out the winds Chandler bubbly guy but it's summertime until it's perfect face to -- whoa whoa I don't really -- it's a waste -- -- regulate banking is a good -- And that's it for me -- -- something and let me know what's at stake and Tracy Byrnes a -- week.
