Mr.
Gretzky is concerned his best -- she can't point.
-- has meant that victims can't linguists.
Kathleen -- -- seems to be as much on trial as Drew Peterson.
Martin blink is a spokesperson for the savvy -- family he's in Chicago.
Think Kate Henry Jones is the president of the national domestic violence hotline she joins me from Austin, Texas welcome.
Thank you judge all right mark and I'm gonna come to you first we just saw that clip Kathleen said dad and her stepmother and I talk to them after the trial or after the opening.
Where -- they say that Kathleen was trashed by the defense do you think that that's what happened Martin.
Absolutely.
They made -- like she was -- kind of nut case on anti depressants and would never be able to even take a bath buyers so.
And do so confidently.
And they trashed up her.
-- tried to raise it like she was crazy up fighter capable of any thing.
And she wasn't like that it off she was a very nice woman she was a great mother from everything I've been told.
And she was really good to her boys and her kids and she should have been treated better than she was treated.
And you know Katie ray Jones I mean -- you know you bet in this business a long time.
Isn't unusual.
For victims who were dead and cannot respond.
To be trashed and called all kinds of names in trials that occur across this country.
As appalling as it is absolutely it's not uncommon.
-- what is your strategy to use -- to call someone crazy a mad woman a liar when she's not there to defend herself because she's dead.
And that -- you know when the -- -- the fabulous outside of the courtroom I mean that they they were in tears how are they feeling now.
Yes they were.
You know there bearing up as well as can be expected they sure are hopeful -- their daughter kitty gets justice in this case.
It's very difficult it's certainly been a dog fight between the the prosecution and the defense and you're right between the between the judge -- the prosecution is well.
I mean if somebody goes out and hires a hit man.
To -- kill their wife.
And there's a witness that comes in testifies to that.
That's an admission against interest -- a declaration against interest and that something.
That I learned in law school is something that a jury's entitled to here.
And I'm not a criminal lawyer but I think it to not hear that and not give kitty a fair trial to.
Bets that shocking to me nobody questions -- Peterson's not entitled to a fair trial but the victim should have a fair one too.
Well I have to tell you mark I was rather shocked if a defendant who was on trial for the murder of his wife has offered someone 25000 dollars to killer.
I would think that that would be evidence or information that would be relevant to -- so called truth finding process.
What do you thing with -- Why I think it's just you know heartbreaking to hear that the -- family is happy to hear this story and only they know the true -- terror.
That Kathleen -- and an amazing woman that she was.
And so in many ways she is speaking from the -- through her family.
Two -- Drew Peterson killed me.
And and you know mark -- and -- in closing here -- it's so difficult for the family I imagine.
To know what their daughters said and yet not be able to come out -- haven't come out at the trial these are haunting.
Alt words -- she said he's gonna kill me he's gonna make it look like an accident.
Right and thank god that the jury was allowed to hear that because.
That was very powerful I know that she was cross examined effectively by mr.
Lopez but they don't call on the shark for nothing.
But Irwin and a -- was explaining that she was cross examined quite closely by mr.
Lopez.
But the truth is is I think she made a very good impression on the jury.
And I think she came up very believable.
And and at the end of the her testimony she wasn't marking the judge when she you've repeated.
His instruction on an objection.
I think she was just trying to answer mr.
Lopez's question after she'd been hammered at 567 times in a row.
In the judge reiterated that the death certificate speaks for itself.
And -- X sixty said that I don't think she was marking judge -- -- at all I think she was just trying to answer the question.
This is the family hopeful Martin.
Yes they are and they are hopeful they think that -- it's still possible to get a conviction here.
I think that they believe that I think they have to believe there really.
You know the problem misses Kate Katie called the police or filed reports -- got orders of protection.
Many times I think as you -- eighteen times and she wasn't listened to them and all they can hope is that someone was concerned now.
Well Bob hopefully that will happen -- blink and -- -- Jones thank you so much for being with us this evening.
