The big story in Republican politics this week wasn't Mitt Romney's foreign -- -- speculation over his vice presidential fact.
No it was the upset victory in the Texas senate Republican primary.
My first time candidate and Tea Party favorite -- crows who has flown in from taxes to join us here on set today this -- welcome to FOX News Sunday.
Thank you Chris it's great to be here are this week we were just saying what an extraordinary week it's been -- you have been called that.
That the rising Republican star that great conservative hope.
Why do you think your victory in a primary has read that resonated so strongly inside the GO play.
Well I think it is.
Part of a tidal wave the sweeping the whole country which is that voters are tired.
Of career politicians in both parties and him in our country is at a crisis point.
And we're seeing in this is true all over the country.
That that that the American people are looking for new leaders who will step up and stop spending money we don't -- And I think this was part of a tidal wave that began in 2010 and I think that tidal wave is only stronger in 2012 -- Let me ask about that because I that the conventional wisdom in this town and for what that's worth.
Had been -- what happened -- the Tea Party that it wasn't out mysteries and it didn't have the power and yes they've won some victories.
In a few states like Indiana against -- but and Nebraska but but not some money.
Even Texas he ran against the establishment candidate lieutenant governor David -- -- -- you beat him by thirteen points.
What do you think your victory says about the state of the Tea Party.
At the -- well I think it's emblematic of of where the Tea Party is nationally which is.
That the movement was just beginning you had thousands of thousands of people out in the blazing sun protest as we've got forward to 2011 and 2012.
Those protests died down and I think the reason is the Tea Party went to work that began rolling up their sleeves going to working campaigns getting involved.
And and in our race in Texas.
What we saw was incredible I mean it was a victory.
For grassroots conservatives all over the state and and it was.
If illustrated and at the end of the day the way elections are supposed to be excited they're supposed to be decided.
Not by a handful of people in a dark room writing checks and picking.
The next nominee but they're supposed to be decided by we the people and it was thousands.
And thousands of Republican women in Tea Party leaders and grassroots activists that generated our victory.
All right let's take a look because -- A lot of people don't know who we are what you stand for so let's talk about that let's look at where you stand on the issues.
You want to abolish the education.
Commerce and Energy Department's TSA.
And the IRS you support a flat tax and -- served -- full lie.
At your victory party you are.
Without a -- and I think the American people are.
Pretty conservative and I'm certain people with Texas are pretty consider but I'll tell you look at the end of the day.
That they're sort of -- world so that there's the world of Washington in the beltway and then there's the rest of the country.
-- the spectrum in Washington you've got career politicians in both parties.
That have been going along to get along a long long time and that's how we've gotten.
-- national -- of sixteen trillion dollars larger than the gross domestic product.
All across the country the rest of Americans are looking at Washington and saying what's wrong with you people.
That that the principles.
That I think voters are looking for are not that complicated.
It's live within your means.
Follow common sense principles don't spend money you don't have and that's what the American people are standing up there demanding right.
Okay you attack your opponent lieutenant governor -- as too quick to compromise and here is what you sad about.
The senate club as it is called let's put it up on this brain.
We need -- kicking in the doors of the club ripped down the shades and auctioned off the silverware.
That this group doesn't just mean more gridlock you're gonna have the conservative someone's side the the liberals on the other side and nothing gets done about any of the big problems here.
What it means is we need to step up and solve -- -- look my view on compromise compromise.
Well my -- compromise is exactly the same as Ronald -- President Reagan said what do you do if they offering -- Answer you take it and then you come back for more.
I -- her -- happy to compromise and work with any but Republicans Democrats libertarians -- work with martians.
If and the if this critical.
They're willing to cut spending and reduce the depth of the problems so many Republicans have fallen into.
Is that compromise going backwards that compromise in a way that makes the situation worse that grows government that grows the -- and I think the American people.
Are fed up with deals that just empower politicians.
And put this country further and further on the road to where Greece's all right but let me ask you about that because that raises -- a question Washington has been roiling -- for the last.
Reduce the debt cut spending.
I don't think so at all at least not that's not -- the deal.
The reason I don't think so -- I don't think the problem in Washington is too little taxes I think the problem in Washington is too much spending.
If you look historically federal tax revenues historically have been roughly 18% of GDP.
Federal spending has been roughly 20% of -- in the last three years it's gone from 20% of GDP 25%.
Of -- -- revenues have gone down to 15% of GDP it well and part of that has been in the policies of this administration the Obama administration.
Has waged a war on jobs and -- war on small businesses I listened and.
David Axelrod a few minutes ago talking about wanted to get the economy going and why -- weren't -- more jobs without taking any any label.
For the fact that their policies have killed.
Thousands and thousands of jobs whether it's Obama care -- Dodd-Frank.
Pushing cap and trade -- the offshore drilling moratorium.
At the end of the day two thirds of all new jobs in the economy come from small business and we need to get the boot of the federal government.
Off the back in the next -- you talk about that that the key to the Republican energy is to tap into the grass -- -- -- Mitt Romney is tapping into the grass roots Tea Party wing of the Republican Party.
I think conservative grassroots in the Tea Party are going to be overwhelmingly.
Behind it -- And and let's I have spoken -- Thousand is not having a grass -- campaign well but the grassroots are energized because.
I think the absolute highest priority in the country.
In November is to defeat Barack Obama.
And I not spoken with literally thousands and thousands of Tea Party activists.
I have yet to -- a single Tea Party leader that is not gonna vote for Mitt Romney and work hard for and because our country.
Is in crisis and we've got to stop this Obama agenda.
If we're gonna preserve opportunity for our -- and would you like to see Mitt Romney picked a harder edged more Tea Party like conservative -- Marco Rubio or Paul Ryan in a safer Lander candidate but I I think both Marco Rubio and Paul Ryan would be terrific choices I'm big fans of both of them.
At the end of the day governor Romney's gonna make his choice of vice president what I think is important in the next few months is that the country had a clear choice about the economic agenda.
A Barack Obama more and more government spending more government control more debt.
And the Romney agenda which is more free markets more liberty and getting back to the principles -- -- constant right where we're running out of time and a couple of more questions I -- -- you are Cuban Americans.
According to the polls Romney is trailing Obama -- and happily among Hispanics.
What does he need to do to reach out to Hispanics without doing what you called Democrat -- Look I think the Hispanic community the values that resonate in our community are fundamentally conserve.
They -- faith family patriotism -- -- the -- of military -- among Hispanics is higher than any demographic in this country.
And they are also hard work and responsibility friend of mine and Hispanic country -- ask me questions sometime.
He said what is the last time you saw.
An Hispanic -- Think it's a great question I'll tell you in my life I never once has seen Hispanic -- -- because in our community.
It would be viewed as shameful to be out on the street bank.
Those are all conservative values faith -- hard work responsibility.
And I think what governor Romney needs to do and I think what he is -- Is defending those values and making the case that the Obama agenda has been incredibly destructive.
To the Hispanic community Hispanic unemployment is higher than the national average and win the federal government is killing small businesses and killing jobs.
It is hurting the future of the Hispanic community.
And we need to carry that message finally let's talk about -- -- as a teenager I read you used to travel around the state.
It in high school giving speeches.
Around the state on conservative values you weren't exactly your normal -- -- -- I don't disagree with that -- -- like I was blessed to have a lot of opportunities that.
When you're the child of an immigrant who was tortured and imprisoned in Cuba who fled here's a teenager with nothing.
With a hundred dollar sewn into his underwear washed dishes making fifty cents an hour to pay his way through college and start a small business.
You appreciate how precious and fragile liberties.
And I think liberty has never been more threatened than it is right now is it true that you memorized.
The US constitution as a teenager -- the whole thing.
I memorized a shortened the moniker and so we would -- speak at rotary clubs and write it all on diesels and -- -- Do you still have a favorite passage that you can recite out well article one section eight which enumerate enumerate the powers of congress.
The way we memorized it was TCC and CC PCC -- -- ran Texas credit commerce naturalization -- counter.
Fitting post office copyright courts.
Piracy army -- navy militia money for militia Washington DC rules are necessary and proper.
-- -- I'm gonna thank you so much for coming in interrupting your vacation to talk with us we're gonna follow the race closely.
This fall in Texas and I suspect we'll be talking -- again sir I look forward to it thank you Chris thank you.
