Governor thanks very much for joining us thanks Karl you're emphasizing the president's.
Executive actions that you -- guided welfare reform.
What does this say about Barack Obama's personal politics and how he approaches welfare as -- government service.
Well I think his perspective is that more more people ought to have the capacity to.
Be part of the welfare system and they shouldn't have to have the work requirement that President Clinton Republicans put in place.
Some years ago.
I happen to think that -- work requirements.
-- it's part of the welfare experience and I actually believe we should have.
Increasing levels a work requirement as opposed to eliminated them as the as the president hasn't taken by executive action.
In the past you referred to this action and the president in this context -- an extreme liberal.
Is his executive action.
Essentially designed to in his view.
Make it more flexible for states how can -- be extreme liberal when he would argue that he's just evolving power of the states.
Well there's no question but that that taking welfare -- And food stamp monies and housing monies and even Medicaid -- and -- to the states we're gonna block grant this to you and and you could -- these programs in the -- you think best that's the right course that's what I proposed.
But what he's doing is saying we're gonna we're gonna.
Get rid of the work requirement you're not gonna have to meet work requirements of that was the really the heart of welfare reform.
It led to a reduction in welfare case load up 50%.
And also reduce the number of people in poverty over the next five years -- five years following the the passage of the bill what what he's doing now is very.
That clearly associated with the fact that he's not being able to create the jobs that people need and and so it with a failed economy and failed policies he's saying you know what.
We're gonna relax the work requirement.
And and that's not the right course to take we should increase work requirements not decrease them.
Democrats are accusing you hypocrisy this morning what you're 2005 letter that then governor of Massachusetts as part of the -- PA's.
Appealed to congress.
To increase flexibility for states -- -- -- were for this at 2005 and -- -- gifted point.
I'm all in favor -- flexibility for states I'm not in favor of reducing the work requirement.
Flexibility for states allowing states to craft their own programs to care for their own people in the way they think best makes all the sense in the world and as governor.
Time and again I thought to increase the work requirements yeah I want state flexibility to craft programs in a way that's best for each state.
This idea the federal government telling states what to do in my opinion is the wrong way to go -- the -- but might.
My focus is on increasing work requirements not a limited in what the president is doing is saying we're gonna.
Take out the requirement for work it's a big mistake so in the context of the debate over the Scott's size and scope of government.
What do you conclude about Barack Obama sort of formulating principles of -- Well you you see the president taking action trying to get the base of this party.
One after the other saying we're not gonna enforce illegal immigration laws we're going to extend.
-- if you look -- the -- away from work requirements if it's a series of I think political moves which also have a very unfortunate byproduct.
Which is expands the role of government makes government larger expands the the level of deficit that we have in this country.
Look that the president has not taken any serious action to tame the deficit he said he was gonna cut the deficit in half.
Instead he's more than doubled.
The president has not been able to do what he -- do.
And that of course is it is is leading to a lot of people in the middle class.
Having very difficult times is this another line item on the bill of particulars that says that -- -- -- an extreme liberal.
Well I think President Clinton would be surprised to see that that the legislation that he had Republicans agreed upon.
To put work into welfare.
Is now going to be wave that work requirement.
By virtue of a president who.
Has a very different view about welfare than that I think Bill Clinton and Republicans did this some years ago the Obama campaign has a video out today that points to your tax here -- -- -- jobs plan.
And -- Tax Policy Center review thereof.
And it says that in essence what you're doing here is -- mathematically possible and it amounts to a tax hike.
What's your reaction.
Well I made it very clear my tax plan that I had several principles number one was -- the highest income individuals we're not gonna pay a smaller share of the tax burden.
Number two if there's any tax reduction it's for the middle class they'll be no increase in taxes for middle income taxpayers.
So what President Obama is pushing out there is simply in contradiction to my own policies.
As of the tax center.
They also said the President Obama is raising taxes -- middle income people -- no question about that.
President Obama's policies raise taxes on middle income taxpayers contrary to what he said when he was a candidate.
So the the Tax Policy Center in looking at my plan.
They they have a -- -- the first two things I said noting that tax increases whatsoever.
The ranking Democrat in the US senate brought their taxes last week that he had -- about ten years based on anonymous source -- at least -- won't cough up.
Get a message for Harry Reid.
Well out of the message I gave Harry Reid was put up or shut up I don't pretty believe that he's got any kind of a credible source.
I don't know who gave him this this line of reasoning with a came from the white house of the DNC or a staffer.
But he -- to say where it came from.
And then we can find out whether that person has any credibility I know they don't because of course it's -- as they say about Harry -- what what his credibility.
Well I think Harry Reid is lost a lot of credibility a lot of fronts this is just one more front that I think is say a very unfortunate -- course.
The Obama team has done everything in their power.
To try and deflect attention.
From the issues people care most about which are.
Related to getting good jobs with rising wages again and that and the president has been watch now for almost four years he's not been able to get America's economy going again.
Four more years of President Obama will be four more years of the same if you like the way things are right now you can vote for the guy -- produced them.
One of the pro Obama super pacs priorities USA.
Has a new ad out this morning that features a widow.
Who essentially says that he worked for a company that they've got involved.
And that his wife's terminal cancer is on your shoulders.
That's where that tone of the ads have now -- I'd like to know what you think about that sort of of an attack on you based upon those circumstances.
I you know I haven't seen the end there are others the specifics so like I can't I can't comment on -- that particular circumstance.
I can tell you that I've had the chance of really running two businesses in my career.
One was a turnaround which I was able to help make successful and save a thousand jobs the other was a business that was a start -- which we grew and made successful.
That start -- invested.
The money other people gave -- pension funds charities.
In various other businesses I'm surprised you're not -- -- -- angry at this you know I've come to expect almost anything.
From the president's people.
They will do anything in their power to hold on power.
And what I want to do is get America working.
I know how to do that.
And the president's gonna try and deflect from the fact that he has not been able to get America back to work and I'm gonna keep bringing it back.
To jobs and getting good jobs and rising take on it given B is -- a -- nature of this campaign is super pac money.
Is there -- some need for campaign finance reform regulation to address this new phenomenon.
Well I happen to believe that the campaign finance laws that exist are horribly ineffective and counterproductive.
I think it's a real mistake to have massive money.
People to be collected by outside groups that run ads that can't be controlled by the candidates so how do you regulate that not be -- constitutional.
Well one way to do that would be to say each campaign -- -- directly what they want to race without limit but they must disclose where they get in the money from immediately.
So people know where the money's coming from but right now there's unlimited money going in the politics but it's just not managed by the campaign about the party.
And -- concepts we really should have the candidate responsible.
For what's being said in behalf of the camp.
OK so as the candidate and in your big responsibility of running mate we're going to try to penetrate the iron -- here.
We find out that John bush Jeb Bush and Condoleezza Rice and Rick Santorum -- former rival evolving given speaking engagements at the RNC convention so their opulent -- You you don't think that we would be so silly as to it not provide from time to time the capacity to throw people off to you.
The fact that some -- the speaking at the convention doesn't mean that they wouldn't necessarily -- speaking slot change from one.
Time to another has you or are you are you closer to a decision.
Yes but this week we were together what two weeks ago lesson lesson that I could go.
Today we get -- and I'm a week and we closer that I was a week ago.
Let's -- had -- an idea.
Not gonna give you anything that being -- -- That's different governor -- had -- -- -- we go.
I'm not gonna give you anything no clue all I can tell you is.
The by the third night of the Republican Convention I would've made a decision and be ready to communicated now we know that your wife is across the pond at the Olympics today so we can we don't assume that they'll be decision in her absence today.
As I said earlier and I'm I'm I'm not gonna give you anything and nothing on the VP front.
Except good admits VP that's the first way to best way to find out first.
My selection of -- -- for me I.
-- -- Process going forward now has you in a big rates what is your biggest challenge apart from the vice presidential selection.
Well my biggest challenges making sure that my message is able to break through all the clutter that comes from the Obama team speaking about it broadly.
Which is doing everything is like throwing chaff out of an aircraft to keep the rocket from coming its -- everything they -- into the air.
To try and keep people from thinking about the president's record on jobs and wages.
And as people think about that and say is there any prospect that a guy who has no new ideas with regards to the economy.
He's gonna get things get it going better and answers now if he can't get this economy going and create good jobs with rising wages I can.
And that's what it's gonna come down to it.
My challenge is being able to break through the clutter and getting to that point.
There are a handful of conservatives have been pretty critical time for you is the nominee -- -- -- pipe down whether it's like taxes -- about -- Tyler but your team.
We got it free press and freedom of speech.
Everybody has to say something on the various shows there are invited to speak on I don't actually see what they say.
To be honest with you I spent most of my time working on policy.
And the campaign of being able to communicate to people -- raising money.
Sort of get a chance to see you guys and here -- -- the advice that you are giving us but I'm sure my team here's the advice.
And and this I'm sure listening carefully -- We've been watching the president say a lot of things about me about my policies and that is not right.
And and if I were to Clinton term it would be a -- only.
It's he's serving.
-- dish which is simply in contradiction of the truth.
And it relates to everything from how -- that it help the middle class.
To tax policy is simply.
Saying things are not accurate.
And and I'd like to see a campaign -- about.
The ideas and the solutions to get America working again as opposed to all the stuff he's serving.
