York city is trying something new -- criminals and potential terrorists correspondent David Lee Miller has the story of today's show and tell.

New York City officials today unveiled their latest high tech tool to combat crime and terrorism we're not your mom and pops police department anymore.

We are in the next century.

We are leading the -- New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg is talking about the domain awareness system.

The system allows new York city police to monitor thousands of surveillance cameras and in real time collect and analyze information from relevant databases.

Police commissioner Ray Kelly says the system is versatile.

The system allows us to connect the dots by instantly tapping into the -- -- of crime records 911 calls license plate read his videotaped footage.

And more although the system was introduced to the media today it has been in use for the last six months.

In one instance authorities responding to a 911 call about a suspicious package used -- system to learn more.

With the click of one button I can call up all cameras within 500 feet of that job.

Investigators then use the system -- -- video recorded earlier to learn about who might have left the package behind.

Authorities say -- camera feeds -- say for thirty days before they are race.

But not everyone thinks the system developed jointly by software giant Microsoft and the NYPD.

Is such a good idea.

Privacy advocates worry that it can easily be abuse.

Even if you think it's a perfectly legitimate law enforcement system.

There is no oversight whatsoever the only people who have control over this are people inside the police department.

And that's one thing when you talking and information are criminals that's an entirely different thing we -- that the general public.

Plans are now in the works for Microsoft to sell the domain awareness system to other cities.

And US allies and because it was developed with the help of the new York city police department the city will receive.
