-- mud in funny twelve presidential campaign is both candidates ramp up the attack ads this week several political analysts are now saying the negative campaigning.

Has reached a new low this election season.

Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee was -- 2008 presidential candidate.

And we're pleased -- that's good morning -- Good morning -- camera -- we were warned that this was going to get ugly well and it is and it's just August I think what we normally see this kind of stuff happens in October so if we're seeing this level.

A negative campaigning in August when no one's really paying attention to politics -- better buckle up and put on the other heavy duty armor it's going to be nasty now you are pretty.

Pretty much universally praised.

For the tone of your campaign you know wait when you were going for the Republican nomination -- lost to -- -- it.

Well I want to ask you about that -- personal why why do candidates resort to these kinds of tactics well the tragedy is that it works and you know I hate it I deplored I didn't use it because I don't wanna win in a way.

That I have to be ashamed stuff and I'd rather honestly you know not -- an office that if you have to lose your integrity in your soul in order to do it.

But the fact is negative advertising works because remember the election is not decided by the intently.

Tuned in political voter.

There appalled by this and they know what the facts are.

But the elections are won by about ten or 12% of voters in six or seven states who really aren't paying that much attention to the details.

They just get it you know 12152.

Big hits and a negative ad works with folks like that and we just did a segment with Steve -- -- look at some of the Fox News bulletin came out now apparently it is working these negative ads that the Obama campaign.

An -- pro Obama super pacs have been putting out there.

Apparently have help the president to a pretty substantial lead the one risk he takes is that people want elect someone that they like.

If he continues and he's perceived by November to be a person -- just gone deep deep deep into the -- to get there.

It could affect -- like ability that could be a negative.

But because this is being run by the super -- even though his campaign has run from all we don't know anything about it -- -- -- that turned out to be with Stephanie -- being on a conference call.

But again when your explaining.

As the Romney campaign has to go back and say look he left in two 1999.

This -- didn't lose his job for two more years I wasn't there it was three more years his wife lost her job three more years after that she got cancer.

-- in politics when you're explaining you're losing simple -- that so what advice would you have for governor -- you mentioned that you where you stayed positive and lost -- What would you tell governor -- well I I mean to be fair I think.

-- in Providence -- with not having enough money that's not gonna be Mitt Romney's -- he does have to be tough but I think the key thing is using surrogates -- maker must.

Harsh message because -- doesn't want to have himself established as the attack dog.

He is VP pick that's one of the roles that person will need to play.

But also the surrogates all the other people who will go out on his behalf.

Can say that things that he doesn't really want to be seen saying but they have to lay the ground work and punch card because you know one thing about an election.

You can't win it any more than you can't have boxing match if you only have one punch you may have a great -- but you've got to have some upper -- you have to have some.

-- -- you have to have a lot of different things in the arsenal.

The Romney team obviously has more than one punch up their -- you decide wonder.

We're going after you know if I have to alas he's -- as a Republican governor are you happy with the direction of your party right now are you happy with the message.

That's being put out there by candidates at the national at the state at the local levels.

Is it inclusive enough as it broad enough.

When you take into consideration the growing demographics of this country is changing demographically I.

I don't think it's a matter of not being brought up and his matter I don't think it's specific enough I do you think the Republicans have a problem that we're not.

Drilling down and saying not we're going to create jobs how.

People want to know how you're gonna do it they want some specifics they want the two and three point plants that make sense to them.

And they want it delivered in language that makes real sense because I think sometimes you have.

Analysts who are giving all these detailed answers that sound like something that comes out of a CPA convention.

What we need is to be able to say something simple if Barack Obama keeps his job you may -- -- If Barack Obama loses his job you may get to keep viewers and then explain how you're going to make it so that businesses can hire people again.

And explain how tax increases.

That's the money that the employer would have used to hire you but -- -- in the government he can't pay you.

Make it simple but be specific and I don't think we are doing nearly what we ought to be doing on that level you make -- sound pretty.

Well it's not that easy but we do have to to make it where it can be understood by the person who's just casually listening as he.

Is driving on the you know on the freeway and you say that as we get closer and closer to November.

Those casual listeners are those people who are not yet listening they're gonna start they're gonna start listening and they're not gonna listen to a you know 57 point plan they're gonna listen to something that can be said in seven words -- in about fifteen seconds governor good to talk to you as always.

A governor Mike Huckabee and make sure to catch Huckabee weekends 8 PM eastern time right here on Fox News.
