I've got Fox News -- the United Nations panel has just ruled that the -- government.
Has committed crimes against humanity and they also say that those high.
Got for the very highest levels of the government in -- All of this as the fighting continues there the UN believes that more than 101000 civilians have been killed the last year and a half.
Coming -- and of course go much higher than that it is just very difficult to get.
Accurate -- -- an -- and volatile situation.
Now the panel also says that the rebel forces have committed crimes as well in this battle.
But they believe that those crimes are not near the brutality.
Of those that have been exercised by the it's not machine.
Let's bring captain Pete Texas -- CEO of concern veterans for America he served in both Iraq and in Afghanistan.
Have to -- -- good to have you here -- -- The first of all this UN news that just -- a little while ago I am -- I guess a lot of people's reaction to the fact that this UN panel has decided there are atrocities being committed.
Is a little late two to the event here but nonetheless yeah -- does it matter and what.
But what would come of it.
But it confirms what we already know right and you.
Rebels a bad regime worse in the atrocities they've been going on.
We we know right now -- -- in is in full desperation mode full regime.
Preservation mode and it doesn't matter if they're civilians or fighters he's got its back against the wall and he's flailing.
-- that's exactly what the report confirms I think it gives renewed energy to folks who believe we should be doing more to get rid of that.
Out regime which showed there's a debate brewing of course about what the merits are removing a Sodom and what comes next.
But certainly provides more ammunition for those who believe United States to be more instrumental.
In ushering along pretty timely -- a -- You've long been -- -- the United States and find -- I'll back gets wrapped up by this comment by Leon Panetta Leon Panetta secretary of defense -- let's listen -- that.
Iran is playing a larger role in Syria in many ways not only in terms of the -- GC.
But in terms of assistance.
Training.
There's now in any indication that they're trying to develop we're trying to train a militia.
Well within Syria.
To be able to a fight on behalf of -- regime.
The -- that's about Iran's involvement and that escalates this whole discussion about what what we should do and how much.
Course -- does this is what Iran does Iran does client states they get their tentacles in by trained forces train that.
That regime and backing them they did the same thing in Iraq where they've got blood on their hands with thousands of American troops that were killed there because of the accelerant Iran brought to that fight -- -- -- the -- Eleven on in the fight.
Against Israel Iran gets its tentacles in supports nasty regimes that further it's goals.
And I I think again -- -- draws the lines even clearer for us about who our friends are and who are foes are let and that's what makes it more.
Puzzling for me why we were so eager to get rid of Qaddafi and Libya and AA and the regime in Egypt but we're hesitating in Syria with a -- in Iran who clearly -- against aren't as.
-- good point I mean we all remember the president saying that that we had to step in there as part of this NATO forces because atrocities were about to be committed on -- scale.
And you look at his report coming out of the UN that would seem to acknowledge that they've already been committed in here -- -- no that's exactly right we were preventing them before now we've seen them happen we know they're happening.
To civilians with and again you wouldn't we shouldn't understate this -- enemy of the United States in Syria in Iran who.
Not only have been killing our troops on the battlefield but seek to wipe Israel off the map.
It's pretty clear what we should stand on this the problem that I have and others have is what kind of pandora's box are we opening when we invite these.
Rebels in to lead we don't know what we're getting there either so I need to know more about the makeup of that of that group but a -- not our friend and he's got to go.
It and that -- you know.
Also comes up and this UN report -- because they're saying.
Look it we believe that the actions of the government in Syria are more egregious but that the rebels have also carried out.
Torture to some of their own atrocities as well say you know who who do you sort of and -- align yourself with them in order to help overthrow this government in any lack.
Yeah it's it's no good options and no one is arguing that we should be throwing a 101 airborne on the ground but the question is can we tip things in a direction.
I would I would argue on the side of pushing back Iranian influence Iranians here what they're seeking to do in that region against Israel -- Alice this.
Well I think you probably do it by a there's talk of a no fly zone to protect.
A civilians.
It's a dipping our foot in the water pushing back Iran -- -- and spread you ultimately do -- I'm ensure Iran does get nuclear weapons can you can imagine what Syria would look like within -- -- and the state that has nuclear weapons we we couldn't even think about.
Intervening so this should put more pressure on the Obama administration to double down on preventing nuclear weapons in Iran as well.
Because without that we won't be able that if we won't have options in a place like Syria in the future.
Captain he accepted to get your insight thank you very much.
