Happening now Paul Ryan the congress and and shaking up the race for the White House in the twelve days since governor Mitt Romney tapped him to be his running mate.

Much has been said about his Republican.

His brand I should say of republicanism or some caller Ryan -- What does his kind of political thinking mean for Republicans and really the nation at large.

Talk about it with Arthur Brooks the president of the American Enterprise Institute author of the road to freedom how to win the fight for preempt the free enterprise.

You wrote an article about what Ryan -- means to you and you.

Come to a kind of an interest in conclusion you say for the first time.

Since Ronald Reagan Republicans might find that they have a national party centered on free enterprise.

And American greatness.

All because of the addition of a formerly relatively obscure Wisconsin congressman.

Well -- the elevation of somebody like Paul Ryan who was very strong views on on free enterprise in America greatness is a big deal.

You know that the problem with the Republican Party from the point of view of a lot of conservatives for the past ten years is that is drifted toward being kind about.

A minor version of the Democrats when you talk about government spending you find that it's.

Kind of administering the welfare state just a little bit more efficiently than -- the Democrats and meanwhile the Democrats have been painting the Republicans that they were -- -- radicals and you know this is put the Republicans and a terrible Bible Ryan has basically -- -- -- he's somebody who has.

Real conservative principles but believes we need -- bus safety net believes that Medicare shouldn't be -- should actually be saved tonight in a responsible way and as a real plan to do it.

He also believes that you know -- the Defense Department and you know the Americans America's very strong presence around the world is something that we should be proud of and that we should pay for responsibly and it's compelling to a lot of people shaking up this race but more importantly than that I think that.

We're looking at the next ten years given the fact it is only 42 years old where we could have a a conservative champion in America that people can get behind I think it could change the Republican Party and that's actually arguably even more monumental than what it does to this presidential race.

In trying to attempt paraphrase of Ronald Reagan I remember him saying something along the lines of you know the of the best saying.

Have the proof of eternal life.

Is a federal program isn't isn't -- the the truth that.

Once government starts bestowing some of these benefits on on people.

It's pretty hard to pull the plug.

There it is horrible that's actually the reason that we're in such fiscally catastrophic state of errors.

That you were running the American economy over the -- for the fact that now.

For the first time in my adult memory.

We're having a serious conversation about how to reform entitlement -- that doesn't happen is a really big deal it's actually very exciting.

People who are paying attention to the facts know that we don't do something right now about Medicare and Social Security.

We're gonna be stealing from our children and it's going to be the end of the entrepreneurial American system as we know it.

Finally we actually have a Republican -- the top of the ticket of the Republican Party.

Is saying that we need to reform it doesn't plan on how we can do it such that this isn't immortality for something it's actually horrible for the American economy it's goodness.

Interest thing.

Arthur Brooks from the American Enterprise Institute thanks for coming out.
