He has spent much of this week mired in social issues trying to distance itself from those controversial comments from Missouri senate candidate Todd Aiken.
Both governor Romney and running mate Paul Ryan have called on Aiken -- drop out after he said in an interview that women's bodies can quote.
Shut down a pregnancy from quoting again legitimate rape.
-- said he misspoke but nearly every big name in the Republican Party slammed those remarks as offensive and just plain wrong.
Still Democrats have tried to -- the controversy right back to the Republican ticket.
The Obama campaign sent out this fundraising email quoting.
Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan tried to distance themselves from the remark.
But the fact is there in lockstep with the with -- -- on the major women's health issues of our time.
And last night President Obama drew laughs at a New York City fund raiser by saying congressman Aiken had quote.
Somehow missed science class.
Democrats are the only ones cashing in on the -- congressman Aiken himself today reports.
Taking in more than a 100000 dollars from donors since he made those remarks which is no small amount for a candidate.
Who was virtually unknown just a week ago.
Now is the Romney campaign tries to return the focus to the economy strategists question what this firestorm could mean going forward.
Let -- not GOP consultant Sherri -- listen.
You know show you look at this whole thing and and clearly Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan -- -- adamantly condemned this statement.
And yet the Democrats are sticking -- that they believe they've got something here well.
Actually I disagree with -- I don't think they really believe they've got something in there I think what they want to do is distract from the big issues.
Because -- they're doing is lying and they may attempt to -- it at the wasserman Schultz.
Put -- that DNC chairman put that email right afterwards trying to link the GOP ticket to -- remarks.
But here's what they bet you don't Romney said now that's not what I believe every Republican -- said -- But here's the problem Trace for the Democrats -- think they didn't quite think it best if they want to start talking about this they have to look at their own DNC platform.
And what they've done and where their president is in many of their leaders are on the very very far fringes of the abortion issue now pro choice.
Republicans.
Do not support partial birth abortion 60% of Democrats do not support partial birth birth abortion 78% of -- of Americans do not support partial birth abortion that President Obama.
Not only supports it but has fought port access -- my -- -- by the way.
And a Democrat that's okay.
Thanks in their platform.
The Democrats the Democrats are gonna say that's really not the point -- the point here is this gives us a chance to kind of highlight the difference between Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan because they both have have slightly different positions when it comes to the abortion issue.
Well and you have that with many issues the presidential.
Nominee and the vice -- -- -- may -- different -- look at who is at the top of the ticket and also Mitt Romney has evolved as many Americans have but I think it's really important that they want to have this conversation Trace going into there.
I convention you have to look at what's in -- platform and what this president wants to do his second term.
What he's committed to doing with regard to partial birth abortion.
Which is completely different you've got Republican female senators who consider themselves pro choice where vehemently against partial birth abortion so they wanted to talk about that when that when the president is so far out of the mainstream from the vast majority of Americans.
I would think this practice is inhumane whether they consider themselves pro -- what pro -- Everything he wants to have that power station I think politically -- -- great damage to him.
What about the charge from Democrats that that Paul Ryan worked with Todd aching and in kind of narrowing the definition of what -- this.
Well I think you've got a lot of different people on the -- working handle on a lot of different things and I think you have to take a look at what Aiken said and what people take issue with the fact matter is they backed off on that language his statements now -- been opposed by -- -- -- by everybody else -- particularly.
You know some of that they the way that he did phrase it.
And I think that if you want to have that the discussion and you have to look at both sides you have to look what's in the democratic platform you can't look.
At just at it -- just what the Republicans -- -- doing because Republicans.
By the way we are big -- -- -- people kind of all over the board on the -- the Democrats have a real problem.
With their partial birth abortion stance and what this president's going to sharing a second term -- Surgical -- great to see you thank you thank you.
